The family of SABC senior producer Suna Venter, who was found dead on Thursday morning, believes the stress she'd faced over the past year helped cause her death. Venter, who was 32, was found dead in her flat in Fairlands in the northwest of Johannesburg. She had recently been diagnosed with a cardiac condition associated with stress and trauma. The South African Society for Psychiatrists is warning that mental healthcare in the country is collapsing. This despite, the Health Ombudsman's release of a damning report in February which contained specific recommendations to improve the service. Psychiatrists are saying many hospitals are still understaffed with few resources. They are also claiming that the death toll from the Esidimeni incident, in which 94 psychiatric patients died between 23 March and 19 December last year in Gauteng, has risen to above 100. Human Rights Advocate George Bizos gave testimony in the Ahmed Timol Inquest seating at the Johannesburg High Court. Bizos who represented Steve Biko and Timol in their inquests and also represented first witness Salim Essop in his case against the police, spoke about his experiences as a lawyer in the time of apartheid. Committee members of the National Assembly's Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs were left fuming on Tuesday following the no-show of former Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba and his successor, Hlengiwe Mkhize to explain why the Department had granted the Guptas citizenship after their initial application was denied. Home Affairs Director-General Mkuseli Apleni, who appeared for the Department, told MP's that officials considered the Gupta family's business interests and investments in the country before deciding there were exceptional circumstances for early naturalisation. The Ahmed Timol Inquest will conclude the cross-examination of activist Salim Essop today. Essop spent the past two days speaking about his four days of torture at the hands of the Apartheid security police following his arrest in 1971. On Tuesday Essop took the court on a tour of the Johannesburg Central Police Station where he was held prisoner. This is the same prison where Ahmed Timol met his death. His death was ruled a suicide in 1972. The current inquest, brought by Timol's family, aims at overturning this ruling. Angela Bolowana reports

The Special Investigation Unit has told the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) and the SABC interim Board that the investigation into the public broadcasters scope will be completed before the end of the Boards term. Earlier this year, Parliament's ad hoc committee probing the SABC, recommended that an investigation be conducted. The officials met at the SABC's headquarters in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, to discuss the scope of the investigation by SIU.
