The current system of public transport subsidies is not sustainable as it supports largely the middle-class and not the poor. That's according to National Treasury intergovernmental relations deputy director-general Malijeng Ngqaleni who addressed the 35th annual Southern African Transport conference which ended on Thursday. The killing of a human rights lawyer, his client and a driver has caused outrageous protests in Kenya. Hundreds of disgruntled Kenyans took to the streets with placards expressing their shock towards the killings. Three police officers have since been arrested in connection with the murder. The South African economy shed fifteen-thousand jobs in the first quarter of 2016. This is according to the Stats SA's quarterly employment survey, which shows that the jobs were lost across all sectors of the economy. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda, has called for calm after the killing of four people in the previously volatile KwaMaphumulo area, on the province'sl north coast. This comes after three people attending a traditional ceremony on Saturday were murdered when unknown gunmen opened fire on them. Two died on the scene, while the third died later in hospital. A fourth male victim who also attended the ceremony was shot while sleeping in a house in the early hours of Sunday. S'khangiwe Mthiyane reports

The Independent Electoral Commission in the North West is again going to begin a process to verify addresses for voters in the Tlokwe and Ventersdorp municipalities. Tlokwe independent candidates are accusing the IEC of not having done enough to verify the addresses of voters appearing on the voters roll, as ordered by the constitutional court. Zimbabwe police fired tear gas to disperse protesting kombi drivers in the capital Harare yesterday. The kombis - the counterpart of South Africa's minibus taxis - were protesting against the number of roadblocks and what they call police brutality. At least one police officer was reported to have been injured. It's the second violent protest in Zimbabwe over the last few days, after a warehouse was torched at the border town of Beit Bridge on Friday. Shingai Nyoka reports

Cosatu has encouraged its member unions to balance wage demands with job security when salary negotiations begin. Cosatu general-secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali says the federation does not want unions to negotiate increases that will result in workers being retrenched and only a few enjoying the benefits. Within only two weeks into the beginning of the winter initiation season, 10 initiates are reported dead, with 100 rescued from the initiation school. 15 initiation schools are reported to be closed and the death toll is expected to rise. A few weeks ago, government has renewed its efforts to deal with initiation deaths by launching the winter initiation season and creating an initiation hotline.
