Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has downplayed fears that the ongoing violence in the Tshwane Metro could hurt South Africa's efforts to stabilise the economy and restore investor confidence. Disagreements over who should run as the ANC mayoral candidate in the capital city have led to an outbreak of violence in areas around Pretoria, particularly Atteridgeville, Mamelodi and Hammanskraal. Supporters of the incumbent mayor, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, are demanding that he be the candidate for another term, after rejecting the ANC's decision to nominate Thoko Didiza as a mayoral candidate for the capital city. The ANC National Executive Committee and the Gauteng provincial leadership are expected to meet with Tshwane ANC branches this in an effort to try to resolve the stand off in the city. Alleged disgruntled ANC members in the city went on a violent protests over the party's Tswane mayoral candidate, Thoko Didiza. The funeral service of Radio and Television personality, Hope Zinde, will take place at the Hellenic Hall in Hatfield, east of Pretoria this morning (tuesday 21 June). Zinde was found murdered in the boot of her car at her Pecanwood Estate home in Hartebeespoort. Her 23-year old son, Warona Mark Zinde has been arrested in connection with the murder. Zinde will be buried at the Garsfontein cemetery, east of Pretoria. Maluti Obuseng reports

Human Rights lawyers have applauded the Commission for Gender Equality's position on the bursaries for virgins scheme. The commission found that the decision to grant bursaries to young girls in KZN on the basis of virginity, violates the right to equality, dignity and privacy. Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) says it expressed deep concern about the scheme as it subjected women and girls to social stigma. Although there has been an agreement that schools in the Vuwani region of Limpopo will re-open, some parents are still reluctant to send their children to school and businesses remain closed. Teachers are still not going to school because of intimidation. Weeks of violent protests against the incorporation of the area into a new-established municipality have seen the burning of more than 20 schools.
