The Pretoria High Court is set for more emotional testimony today (wednesday 15 June), when state advocate, Gerrie Nel, calls his last witness in aggravation of sentencing against Oscar Pistorius. It is understood that it will be a family member of Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was found guilty of killing Steenkamp on 14 February 2013 at his luxury house in an estate east of Pretoria. The local government elections will go ahead on the third of August despite the Constitutional Court's ruling that the IEC did not capture the voter's addresses correctly on the voter's roll. Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has given the Electoral Commission 18 months to get its systems in order. Previously the Electoral Court wanted that the IEC provide addresses of registered voters. To give a perspective on this, we are joined on the line by Grant Masterson- he is the Programme Manager at the Electoral Institute for the Sustainability of Democracy in Africa (EISA).

As the impasse with 301 South African firefighters who went on strike demanding better pay while battling wildfires in Fort McMurray continues, the portfolio committee on environmental affairs says the department of environmental affairs has to account in the matter. The Committee says it will be engaging with the department to fully understand what happened in Canada to prevent any similar occurrence in future. The Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU) has met with the SACP to strengthen their relation in dealing with the issues of the workers. Yesterday's Constitutional Court judgement has been widely welcomed - by the Independent Electoral Commission, goverment and political parties. The court has ruled that the IEC's failure to record all available voter addresses on the voter's roll is inconsistent with the rule of law obligations and is invalid. It has however suspended the invalidity order giving the IEC until June 2018 to furnish addresses for the voter's roll except in the case of Tlokwe where discrepencies must be corrected in time for the next by-elections. Twenty-one-year-old Henri van Breda is expected to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrates Court today in connection with the murders of three members of the Van Breda family more than a year ago. We now get the latest developments on the National Health Insurance (NHI) process. The NHI was introduced as a system that aims to unite public and private healthcare resources to ensure that everyone living in the country has access to the same standard of health care. Government's White Paper on NHI proposes a single, compulsory medical scheme for all. Critics though have pointed out that the NHI system would not work. John Kane-Berman a policy fellow at the South African Institute of Race Relations recently wrote that the system is not sustainable.
