Upturned Table

It has been one year of Idle Red Hands Weekly. What is the future of this weekly podcast? We talk with Chris, one of the original hosts, about the origins of the Idle Red Hands and the origin of the name. GenCon 2020 is officially canceled, but will still exist as GenCon Online with details to come. We will be trying out the Doomtrooper Digital CCG online. A new edition of Twilight 2000 is on the horizon. Cubicle 7 has released the digital version of Age of Sigmar: Souldbound RPG. The print version is coming late summer. Frontier Developments has announced an Age of Sigmar real-time strategy game. Is this Dawn of War for re-imagined Warhammer fantasy? Riotminds is on Kickstarter with a 5E version of Trudvang Adventures. The irony doesn’t escape us.

Frosthaven, the sequel to Gloomhaven by Cephalofair Games, finished big on Kickstarter becoming the most funded boardgame ever. A well-deserved success. Kickstarter is laying off 45% of its staff due to the 35% decline in active projects on the platform and absolutely nothing to do with their recent unionization. Battlestar Galactica has a space battle miniatures game we will be trying. Critter Hug is a new series by some of the cast of Critical Role. A good thing for the hobby or just good old fashioned payola. Never Going Home by Wet Ink Games is a World War occult roleplaying game set during the Great War with art by Charles Ferguson-Avery. The game mechanics and the setting look excellent. Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History has an great series on World War One if you want some background for this game.  A YouTube channel, Filmento is worth checking out if you like movies. Into The Night, a Belgian Netflix series, may provide good inspiration for a roleplaying campaign.

This week Chris and I discuss… not that Chris, the other one. We discuss GenCon and its possible cancellation. San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon canceled. Kickstarter down 35% and facing layoffs, but maybe just the labor organizers. Star Wars Powered by the Apocalypse Engine. Solo gaming with Tunnels and Trolls by Flying Buffaloe and the zine RPG, The Artefact by Jack Harrison. Microscope a Fractal Roleplaying Game of Epic History by Lame Mage Productions. Frosthaven Kickstarter in its final week and breaking US$9 million.

This week we discuss the Tales From the Loop Amazon series and the well-timed Free League boardgame on Kickstarter. Idle Red Hands is producing The Complete Mutant Chronicles, a video lore series about the Mutant Chronicles and Warzone setting. The Professional Nerd, @BryanCPSteele , announced that Res Nova has the license to produce a new edition of Warzone. The Man of Steel, Henry Cavill confirms his love for Warhammer 40k on Instagram. CMON ceases trading on the Hong Kong stock exchange because of “auditing issues”. They also launched a Kickstarter for Ankh: Gods of Egypt, which is third in the series of games by Eric M. Lang, including Blood Rage and Rising Sun. Fantasy Grounds reports a 150% boost in online sessions on their platform. Now maybe the time to see what a virtual tabletop is all about. The sequel to Gloomhaven is also live on Kickstarter. Frosthaven looks to be an equally impressive game and the designer, Isaac Childes, couldn’t deserve another big success more. He runs a great crowdfunding campaign. Here’s hoping things get back to normal soon and these projects go well.

Apologies for the sound quality this week. We recorded remotely for the first time since the shutdown in Japan. We will get the bugs worked out for next week.

Some of the most recent cancellations in the tabletop industry. Will GenCon be next? Adam J. Rose is the new head of Grim and Perilous, makers of Zweihander RPG. A list of virtual tabletop software to try in these self-isolating times. Most are offering free access to premium features or a discount for a license. Critical Role played a sponsored one-shot of the Bethesda Softworks videogame, Doom. We are still trying to figure out how they did it.  Bundle of Holding is offering a Solo Games Bundle, including the excellent Ironsworn RPG in the Starter Collection. The Farflung RPG may be our next scifi after dark tabletop session. Is it the only system capable of running the TV series, LEXX? With the future of the human species up in the air, we may or may not be back next week. Keep safe and stay tuned!

Altered Carbon is getting an RPG setting and a second season on Netflix. Hot Topic now has Critical Role gear. Mörk Borg by Stockholm Kartell, is being released by Free League’s new boutique imprint. The Love Domain for Clerics in 5E fails miserably and is being retooled. Ironsworn is a FREE TTRPG with co-op, solo and campaign modes. Foreign television dramas with subtitles help immerse you and give you great campaign setting ideas. We have some recommendations.
