Thomas Elliott, a former Games Workshop artist known for his work on Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar, is developing Eskaton, an original grimdark science fiction setting. After five years at Games Workshop, Elliott transitioned to freelance work in 2023 to focus on this passion project, a decade in the making. Eskaton explores a universe where space travel is fragmented, technology has stagnated, and human colonies evolve in isolation. The setting’s rich narrative includes dystopian worlds, such as Neo-plasia, where massive mining facilities and totalitarian regimes dominate.Key elements of Eskaton include the Agori—towering cyborg warriors—and a dark, expansive sandbox for storytelling. Elliott plans to release Eskaton as a series of art books and miniatures, starting with Neo-plasia, while collaborating on a skirmish game. Inspired by the success of indie wargames like Trench Crusade, Elliott hopes Eskaton will offer a fresh take on grimdark aesthetics, providing an alternative to well-worn franchises. 

Household Volume II expands the imaginative universe of the ENNIE-nominated RPG, delving deeper into the lore, settings, and characters of the Littlings’ adventures. Players explore new areas, including the Garden’s Front Yard and Backyard, filled with mythical locations like the Fountain of Quillwaters and Bramble Town. Elf Creek Games, a board game publisher known for titles like Atlantis Rising and Honey Buzz, faces backlash from Kickstarter backers due to prolonged delays in delivering crowdfunded projects and a lack of updates since August 30, 2024. The company has four overdue campaigns, including expansions for existing games and a new title, Paradox Initiative. Ashes Without Number is the latest addition to Kevin Crawford’s Without Number RPG series, set in a post-apocalyptic world full of diverse challenges, such as civil collapse, zombie uprisings, or alien invasions. Building on the popular d20 and 2d6-based old-school mechanics, it offers streamlined gameplay and is compatible with its sister games like Stars Without Number. The game provides tools for Game Masters (GMs) to craft personalized apocalyptic settings with unique challenges, such as mutant perils, societal collapse, and more. “Lone Wolf – Adventures in Magnamund” is an upcoming tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) set in the world of Magnamund, utilizing the Dragonbane system by Free League. The original Lone Wolf series, a popular line of gamebooks from the 1980s, allowed players to engage in role-playing elements with a combat system, skills, and equipment. This new TTRPG will expand on the original by introducing various professions, heroic abilities, new monsters, and schools of magic, making it a rich experience for players. The game’s Kickstarter campaign aims to release two 256-page sourcebooks: one focusing on gameplay elements and another featuring a full campaign set in Magnamund. The original Lone Wolf series was a collection of 28 gamebooks where players acted as Lone Wolf, a Kai Lord seeking to defeat the Darklords who attacked his monastery. The books combined Choose Your Own Adventure mechanics with RPG features like inventory management and combat. They stood out by offering choices dependent on in-game abilities, adding a layer of complexity. Though out of print, digital versions of the books are available through fan projects like Project Aon, and an augmented reality version of the game was recently released in a limited capacity.

Wizards of the Coast has ordered a large print run for the new Player’s Handbook (2024) to meet high demand. According to Jess Lanzillo, Wizards’ VP of franchise and product, the English version of the book sold more in its first month than the 2014 edition did across all languages in two years. A second printing is already in the works due to the unexpectedly high demand. Despite some quality concerns from 2023, the initial run has filled shelves across the U.S., though big retailers like Walmart and Target won’t get stock until later this year or 2025. Localized versions of the Player’s Handbook are also in production. Wizards of the Coast is working to ensure the distribution of its core rulebooks, with the Dungeon Master’s Guide (2024) set for release later in October. Lanzillo highlighted the importance of keeping up with demand and reducing gaps between restocks. The production team is addressing these challenges with improved press checks. Digital adoption of the new 2024 rules is also on the rise, outpacing the older 2014 rules for character creation. Wizards anticipates a smooth transition to the new rule set, with Dungeon Masters beginning to plan campaigns using the 2024 rules. Looking ahead, the next major Dungeons & Dragons release after the Monster Manual (2025) will be a dragon-themed anthology, similar to past releases like Candlekeep Mysteries. Wizards is also working on making older campaigns compatible with the new rules, especially for high-level monsters, and encouraging third-party content creation. Lanzillo emphasized that Wizards is committed to maintaining continuity with the game’s previous editions, ensuring that long-time fans’ investments in the 5th edition remain relevant.

The Bolt Action Introductory Set, due for release on November 30, 2024, is designed to introduce new players to the popular WWII tabletop wargame. The set includes a Bolt Action Field Manual, miniatures for US Rangers and German Grenadiers, a terrain piece, and essential gaming components. The manual teaches gameplay through six missions that gradually introduce players to the mechanics. While the set is aimed at beginners, it also offers value for returning veterans looking to brush up on the basics.

The Fighting Fantasy series, a solo adventure gamebook franchise created by Steve Jackson and Sir Ian Livingstone, is set to return to the U.S. for the first time in over 20 years, thanks to a deal with Steve Jackson Games. Fighting Fantasy was another influential series in the 1980s, blending non-linear storytelling with tabletop mechanics. This re-release is scheduled for 2025, bringing the first ten books back to shelves in the U.S. for a new generation of readers and players.

Alien:The Roleplaying Game Second Edition reveals new content, including two detailed maps by Miska Fredman, depicting the USCSS Fidanza and the Jeremiah VI colony. These additions provide new visual tools for gameplay. The new edition features updated rules, new content, and expanded tools, all compatible with existing Alien RPG material. The “Rapture Protocol” scenario also returns, following a star freighter crew on a dangerous colony resupply mission. This cinematic scenario evokes classic Alien themes of tension and survival.

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is searching for a new Brand Publicity Manager following the departure of Greg Tito from Wizards of the Coast. The job will focus on managing publicity programs, fan relations, product launches, and media for the brand. Given D&D’s recent challenges and upcoming 5th edition revisions, the role will play a critical part in shaping its future. Hasbro, the parent company, hopes to grow D&D as a major digital gaming brand.

Dropfleet Commander, a sci-fi spaceship game by TTCombat, is open for pre-orders for its new edition. The game features a two-player starter set, highlighting the United Colonies of Mankind (UCM) and a new faction, the Bioficers. The new edition includes updated core ships for several factions and introduces modular space stations, along with expanded lore and rules explained by creator Dave Lewis.

Horizons, a new quarterly magazine for tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) fans, will debut on October 9. It offers a mix of D&D-compatible content, non-D&D franchises, and contributions from experienced creators. The magazine’s first issue features articles on Star Dragons, rune-powered transportation, and other adventures. Horizons is focused on paying fair wages to creators and ensuring all content is thoroughly playtested. It will cater to a wide range of campaigns, providing tools and adventures for various TTRPG settings.

Many fans of Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) who preordered the 2024 Player’s Handbook recently had their orders canceled without a clear explanation. Customers reported receiving emails stating their payment didn’t go through, even though some had been charged. The issue primarily affected those who paid via PayPal, particularly for the physical copies of the game. Warlord Games has announced the launch of their first board game Kickstarter, Vanguard: Normandy, set for release on October 1st. Developed by the Bolt Action team, the game offers a one-to-four-player World War II experience. With a dice activation system and epic-scale miniatures, the game brings variety through its hex-map-based battlefields. Players can enjoy a dedicated solo-play mode, making it ideal for both solo and multiplayer sessions. Newcomers can enjoy easy-to-learn gameplay, while veterans will find enhanced character options, spaceships, and adversaries. The 30-year gap between novels provides rich material for storytelling. Green Ronin also introduced miniatures, expanding the immersive RPG experience with customizable Expanse crew and spaceship models.

Chaosium Inc. has announced the return of ElfQuest: The Roleplaying Game, in collaboration with the comic series’ creators, Wendy and Richard Pini. First released in 1984, the RPG uses the Basic Roleplaying System (BRP) and will be reissued as part of Chaosium’s Classic series. The re-release will include the original artwork by Wendy Pini and all the 1984 supplements. A Kickstarter campaign will launch in October 2024 to commemorate the game’s 40th anniversary, aiming to reintroduce ElfQuest to both old and new fans.

We are creating characters and world-building in Ironsworn by Shawn Tomkins. This will be a Guided session zero and campaign run by Will.

The OLD WORLD  is the epicenter of Apocalypse. We have traveled to the fabled Ironlands to seek Hel’s Iron Bell to send the forces of evil away.

Most villages have a ceremonial IRON bell to swear oaths. These bells are believed to keep evil spirits at bay.

People of the Ironlands are a LEGACY of pilgrims and descendants they secured and hid Hel’S Iron bell for these End Times. Stories have turned to legend.

COMMUNITIES are fortified villages each one had a different idea of the true bell. Bellanders  

LEADERS are religious in nature, priests, Gothi, each believes theirs is the true form.

DEFENSE each fortified village has road wardens called bell wardens that protect. 

MYSTICISM sound of bells are magic and benevolent.

RELIGION old gods are true and sense of our purpose.

FIRSTBORN Night gaunts. Ill omens. Giants are mindless lumbering forces of nature. Jotnar.

BEASTS are dire animals dire bears and wolves and intelligence. 

HORRORS kept away by bells. Dead and lonely become thralls, Toneless, to the Night Gaunts. Night more dangerous. Villagers know risk.

In the Ironsworn tabletop roleplaying game, you are a hero sworn to undertake perilous quests in the dark fantasy setting of the Ironlands.Others live out their lives hardly venturing beyond the walls of their village or steading, but you are different. You will explore untracked wilds, fight desperate battles, forge bonds with isolated communities, and reveal the secrets of this harsh land.

Are you ready to swear iron vows and see them fulfilled—no matter the cost?

The Ironlands setting is gritty fantasy on a rugged frontier. Generations ago, your people settled here in the wake of a cataclysm which drove them from the Old World. Now, you live in isolated villages of wood and thatch at the edge of dark forests, or as nomads among the northern hills, or as seafarers along the rugged coast. Your world is bounded by deep woods, violent seas, and imposing mountains where only the reckless or resolute venture.

However, the default assumptions are only a starting point. You are encouraged to make Ironsworn your own, and to bend the setting to your liking. Your version of the Ironlands will be unique because you’ll define aspects such as the history of your people, magic, mythic beasts, and much more. The choices you make will also help inspire the personal vows that drive your character. 

You can also ignore the default setting entirely and play in your own world, or in one inspired by media, history, or another RPG. The Ironsworn rules are flexible enough to accommodate many forms of fantasy and historical fiction.

Cyberpunk 2077: The Board Game has smashed its crowdfunding goals on Gamefound, raising almost $4 million, having reached its funding target within 10 minutes of launch. Developed by Go On Board, the creators of previous Witcher board games, this cooperative, scenario-based tactical combat game offers a mix of RPG elements, deck building, crafting, and real-time turns. A companion app narrates the campaign and times each round, adding urgency and tension. Players can customize characters with cybernetic enhancements and make narrative decisions that impact future missions. The game’s dynamic gameplay and narrative flexibility promise replayability, appealing to fans of the Cyberpunk franchise.

Actor and director Matthew Lillard’s company, Beadle & Grimm’s, is releasing a Dungeons & Dragons book based on his comedy TV show Faster, Purple Worm, Kill! Kill! titled Faster Purple Worm: Everybody Dies. The book features 15 one-shot adventures, all of which end in a Total Party Kill (TPK), designed for improvisational play. While Wizards of the Coast has banned AI-generated artwork from D&D and Magic: The Gathering, Cocks acknowledged the potential of AI to enhance user-generated content and assist with campaign development.
