Today we are going to listen to Citizenship quiz in honor of Puerto Rico. Other quizzes for Hispanic heritage month have included Puerto Rican heros such as baseball player and philantropist Roberto Clemente, who died bringing disaster relief to earthquake victims, and Congressman Luis Vicente Gutiérrez, a tireless advocate for immigration reform.
Today's extra-long quiz has twenty-five questions featuring the Columbus and Taino, historian Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, modern Puerto Rican politicians such as San Juan's mayor, Carmen Yulín Cruz, and musical genius, Lin-Manuel Miranda. However today's podcast is ten questions that focuss on the life and work of one Puerto Rican, Isabel González. Let's get started

US Citizenship Bootcamp: Exercises and Quizzes to Pass the Naturalization Interview By Jennifer Gagliardi
What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray.
What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals -- that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation.
That's how America has traveled this far.
That's how, if we keep at it, we will ultimately reach that more perfect union.

In June 2012, President Obama issued an excutive order Called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DACA gives work, school, deporation relief to undocumented youth. DACA was issued after the failure of Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
On Sept. 5, 2017. at the behest of current president, the Department of Homeland Security, initiated the phase out of DACA. DHS will provide a limited, six-month window during which it will consider certain requests for DACA and applications for work authorization, under specific parameters.
Frequently Asked Questions: Rescission Of Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
Q7: Once an individual's DACA expires, will their case be referred to ICE for enforcement purposes?
A7: Information provided to USCIS in DACA requests will not be proactively provided to ICE and CBP for the purpose of immigration enforcement proceedings, unless the requestor meets the criteria for the issuance of a Notice To Appear or a referral to ICE under the criteria set forth in USCIS' Notice to Appear guidance (www.uscis.gov/NTA).
This policy, which may be modified, superseded, or rescinded at any time without notice, is not intended to, does not, and may not be relied upon to create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable by law by any party in any administrative, civil, or criminal matter.
Q8: Will USCIS share the personal information of individuals whose pending requests are denied proactively with ICE for enforcement purposes?
A8: Generally, information provided in DACA requests will not be proactively provided to other law enforcement entities (including ICE and CBP) for the purpose of immigration enforcement proceedings unless the requestor poses a risk to national security or public safety, or meets the criteria for the issuance of a Notice To Appear or a referral to ICE under the criteria. This policy, which may be modified, superseded, or rescinded at any time without notice, is not intended to, does not, and may not be relied upon to create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable by law by any party in any administrative, civil, or criminal matter.
What can we do?
We must use our status as US citizens and legal permanent residents to speak out on behalf of undocumented youth.
We must use our numbers to push for comprehensive immigration reform.
We must use our contact our Senators and Representives and make DACA and comprehensive immigration reform the law of the land.
Go to www.house.gov or www.senate.gov find the Senators and Representative's address and write them a post card or letter or send an email or call
Contact the members of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security
To close, I want to quote Senator Dianne Feinstein
"To DACA youth across the country, I say this is not over. I stand with you and your families. You are valued. Our country needs you. And I won't stop fighting to protect you."

Today we are going to listen to Francisco Pinedo a teacher and administrator from Soledad Adult School. We are going to practice the 9th interview from my new book, US Citizenship Bootcamp. This interview focuses on the vocabulary related to military service which can be a difficult conversation. Just as a person was a good soldier in the country of their birth, so can the same person be a good citizen in their chosen country, the United States.
Also, we depart a little bit from the interview script to have an extended conversation about registering for the Selective Service, a potentially problematic topic for men who come to the United States when they were young. At the end of the interview, we include further comments about Selective Service in English and Spanish.
Note from SSS.gov:
"The Selective Service System has not now, or in the past, collected or shared any information which would indicate a man's immigration status, either documented or undocumented."
"The Selective Service System has no authority to collect such information, has no use for it, and it is irrelevant to the registration requirement."
"Consequently, there is no immigration data to share with anyone."
