The federal government says it will "continue making the strongest case" for the removal of US tariffs on Australian exports, but isn't putting a time-frame on its hopes of getting an exemption.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says he believes he could have secured a better outcome, in the wake of Donald Trump's self-declared liberation day of tariffs yesterday.
