UPDATED RELEASE - NEWBERG-DUNDEE POLICE INVESTIGATING A THREAT OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE

On March 3, 2016 Officers from the Newberg-Dundee Police Department were informed of a threat of violence toward students and staff at the Newberg High School. Police and School officials worked through the night to avert the threat and ensure that the high school was a safe place for students and staff.
During this investigation it was discovered that two of the involved juveniles had committed probation violations. Detainers were issued and the two were taken into custody that night.
After completing the bulk of the investigation, officers from the Newberg-Dundee Police Department have charged one of the juveniles with the following crimes:
* 2 counts of Attempted Assault in the 1st degree
* Attempted Unlawful Use of a Weapon
These charges stem from plans and attempts to obtain weapons to harm students and faculty at the Newberg High School campus. Some of these students were on a list and some were not.
The suspect took substantial steps to obtain a firearm as well as compiled a list of supplies to accomplish the plan. Based on interviews it was learned that the plan was to be carried out within approximately 70 days.
Officers interviewed approximately 30 people including students, teachers, and counselors during this case. The Newberg School District Administration was very helpful and supportive during this investigation. We were able to work together to avoid this potential tragedy.
We take the safety and security of our schools very seriously and no one has a right to threaten that safety. We appreciate and rely on our strong working relationship with our school district, and the students in situations like this. This is a good reminder for students that if they see or hear of something that could affect the safety of others, make sure and report it to a teacher, counselor, or a police officer.
STATEMENT ON NHS THREAT OF VIOLENCE INVESTIGATION

The Newberg-Dundee Police Department released information today on the investigation into the threat of violence toward Newberg High School on March 3rd, including the charges filed against one of the juveniles in custody.
Because this is still an active police investigation, the school district is not at liberty to disclose specific information.
Newberg-Dundee police did assure school administrators that students and staff would be safe when school opened March 4th. At that time two juveniles were in custody and police increased their presence in and around campus.
Since that time, classes and activities have resumed as usual. Counselors have been available to students and the school has continued to communicate with parents and staff as they were able, including the fact that the students in custody would not be returning to campus.
Newberg High School continues to follow the policies and procedures in place to keep school safe. Safety plans and practices are in place. The school and police department have a strong partnership that ensures safety.
School safety is one of our highest priorities and most important responsibilities. School staffs continue to assess and look for ways to increase and improve safety at all Newberg schools.
