MCMINNVILLE MAN ARRESTED IN RURAL NEWBERG STABBING32 year old Andrew Alan Nelson, arrested yesterday by Yamhill County Detectives after an investigation into a stabbing incident on Dog Ridge Road near Newberg will be arraigned today at 1:30 p.m. in Yamhill County Circuit Court. His current charges of Assault in the 2nd Degree an d Unlawful Use of a Weapon carry a bail of $157,500. As reported in the earlier media release, Nelson is alleged to have stabbed a female acquaintance the day prior during an altercation in rural Newberg. Detective Nicole Rickles, the arresting Detective, indicated in her charging instrument that the victim was stabbed with a knife in the left upper shoulder while seated in the driver's seat of a vehicle while Nelson was outside her door. The stabbing occurred after an exchange of words. The victim drove from the scene, with Nelson holding onto the exterior of the car. The car stopped a short distance away and the victim and a passenger fled the vehicle for help. The victim was later treated and released from the hospital. Nelson left the scene but was located in McMinnville a short time later and was taken into custody without incident by McMinnville Police and Sheriff's deputies. Sheriff Tim Svenson praised the interagency cooperation that led to the quick apprehension. "I'm very proud of the way our agencies in Yamhill County support and assist each other when the need arises. In this particular case it was instrumental in getting Mr. Nelson into custody quickly and without further incident. FIRE CAUSE LOCATED IN RUBY TUESDAY FIREMcMinnville fire officials say combustibles stored too close to a gas water heater was the source of a fire which caused 50-thousand dollars in damage to the Ruby Tuesday restaurant.The restaurant manager says damage was confined to a storage area of the restaurant and they hope to be open as soon as Friday or possibly late Thursday. The fire alarm came in at 1:03pm from automatic detection equipment. Workers said the nearby kitchen area filled with smoke fairly quickly.Firefighters kept the fire confined to the storage northwest corner of the building. 18 firefighters and a half dozen vehicles from McMinnville fire responded and three firefighters and a extension ladder truck from Newberg answered the call.

NEWBERG CITY COUNCIL PASSES MEDICAL MARIJUANA ZONING ORDINANCEMedical Marijuana dispensaries. It's a thorny controversial issues that city councils across Oregon are having to wrestle with. Newberg's city council on a four to three vote passed a zoning ordinance that designates were such dispensaries could be located.Councilor Stephen McKinney was the most vocal in his opposition, saying it goes against the recomendation of the Newberg police chief, the Yamhill County District Attorney and the U.S. constitution. Federal and state law do not agree on the status of medical marijuana.To the fed's it's illegal, however, Oregon is one of the state's where it's legal for medicinal use. Some including councilor Essin says he's concerned what will happen if the federal government decides to push the issue with the state of Oregon. The Newberg zoning ordinance will go into effect as soon as the May first moroatorium expires.It generally follows the state law of not allowing a dispensary within a thousand feet of a school, but Newberg's ordinance includes parks and sets hours of operation from 9am to 8pm. A dispensary could be located in a downtown commercial zone....it would be allowed in C-2 and C-3 commercial zones, but not allowed in another other zones including industrial zones.Councilor Lesley Woodruff says the state of Oregon already allows Medical Marijuana Dispensaries and the city of Newberg can't change that. She joined with Mayor Bob Andrews and others saying at least the Newberg zone is more restrictive that state law.
