Commissioners approve landfill expansionIn front of a packed house, Yamhill County Commissioners affirmed the approval of the Planning Commission to allow a 29-acre expansion of Riverbend Landfill.  However, the commission vote was two to one, with Commissioner Allen Springer voted to deny the expansion request.    Springer telling KLYC News after the meeting that it was after his site design review, or visit of the site and it's proximity to the highway that he could not approve of the expansion.  All three commissioners told the audience they have wrestled personally with this decision.Commissioner Mary Starrett said commissioners had to make a decision based on county statutes and the applications criteria in front of them.  She added we are not here to vote on whether this is a good location for a landfill, "it's a terrible location for a landfill".   County Staff added a list of criteria to their recomendation to approve landfill expansion.   We will have audio of the meeting up on our "on Demand" site later today.KLYC asked members of the Stop the Dump Coalition for their response.  A leader of the group told us the make decisions as a group, andas such would not have a statement for KLYC.   However, individual members of the group seemed somewhat pleased they walked away with a two to one decision.  One member saying "this is the first time a commissioner has voted against the landfill".     One member saying the group may appeal to Oregon's Land Use Board of Appeals.    But it seems like the group left the meeting planning strategy for their next move.The written findings of fact will come before the Yamhill County Commission April 16th on their decision today, which will include the stipulated conditions proposed by Yamhill County staff.

SUSPICIOUS CAR FIRES BEING INVESTIGATED IN NEWBERGNews Release from Newberg-Dundee Police Dept.(click to hear audio report)On Sunday morning at approximately 12:40 am Officers from the Newberg-Dundee Police in conjunction with the  Newberg Fire Department responded to a report of a car fire in an apartment complex located 400 block of South Everest Road in Newberg.   When authorities arrived they found two vehicles fully involved.  Shortly after the vehicles were extinguished it was reported that there were two more vehicles on fire in the mobile home park in the 300 block of South Everest.  That report was received at approximately01:19. Two of the three cars were impounded so NDPD officers and the Fire Marshall from the Newberg Fire Department can continue their investigation.  There maybe more information released to the media later this week.
