Lean on Me with Hope - Mark 13:24-37

The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” or “visit.” and the name of this season is Advent because we look for both “advents” of Christ: The first happened in Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago and the second is the one yet to come and that’s the one that we need to watch and be ready for!

The first Sunday of Advent is the Sunday of hope. So, who do you lean on for hope?

God’s Power on the Journey - Ephesians 1:15-23

One question I need to ask is: why do people lose power? – And I found several examples in Scripture... I was recently reading 2nd Chronicles 24 and 2 kings 13 and there you can find several kings who reigned in Israel and Judea between 840 BC to 760 BC. Those Kings were Jehoiada, Joash, Jehu, Jehoahaz, and Jehoash. There seemed to be a pattern there. These kings for the most part started out doing well. So, why did they lose power?

Sometimes we hope for things where there is no hope. A car can’t bring true hope; it can bring a feeling of contentment and exhilaration, but it can’t bring real hope. Financial stability can not bring true hope; it can bring security and a level of ease, but not true hope. A spouse can’t bring true hope either because a spouse’s abilities are limited to what he or she can control.

True hope comes from the One who created hope: From God! True hope comes by trusting God even when circumstances are difficult.

At the border of the Promised Land – Exodus 40:1-3, 36-38 – Deuteronomy 34:1-9

No matter how good we are or how much we have done for God, we sometimes disobey Him… The result of our disobedience is that we will be disciplined… God disciplined Moses severely… but still called him his friend.

When you experience the sting of God’s discipline… respond as Moses did… Don’t turn away in anger, embarrassment, or resentment... Instead, turn toward God… with love, with openness, and with a desire to do better.
