PJ Martin - Director of True Utah

The latest podcast (available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify or listen above) features an interview with PJ Martin who is the state director for True Utah. Martin has a long list of accolades and hails from New Jersey. I’d never met Martin before so I was stoked for this episode and I think it turned out great. Martin loves the game and you can tell by the passion he portrays in this interview as well as his involvement in field and box lacrosse.

Mountain West Showcase

True Utah is hosting the Mountain West Showcase on June 8-9 of 2021. The event will feature a wide variety of college coaches and is a great way to get seen without having to travel far. You can get an early bird discount by entering the code PRIME50 at checkout. More info can be found here.

True Utah Maryland/Delaware Trip

True Utah traveled to Maryland and Delaware this weekend to play in the Fall Lax Showdown and FLG in 3D events. True Utah 23 went 3-0 on Saturday and 1-1 on Sunday. True Utah 24 went 1-2 on Saturday and 3-0 on Sunday while True Utah 25 went 0-3 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday. Martin said, “2025 did as well with a huge win over PA powerhouses Mesa lacrosse and Fusion, along with a close loss to PA Rough Riders.” Martin also offered praise for a few standouts: In the 2023 class, Jacob Osborne (Waterford), Gavin Gann (Mountain Ridge) and Berkley Horoba (Alta) played very well. On the 2024 team, Spencer Reagan (Judge Memorial) was 90%+ on the entire weekend facing off with 8 goals as well. Carson Isaacson (Fremont) was excellent on attack. The 2025 took some lumps but proved they belong. Grant Rice (Timpview) was a monster on defense, Henry Cunningham (Rowland Hall) was 80% or better on face-offs and Kaydin Berry (Fremont) on played well on attack.

Garrett Haas Commits to Ohio State

If you haven’t heard this name already, get to know it: Garrett Haas. Haas transferred to Lone Peak from Texas and committed to Ohio State.

Lacrosse Mustache Madness

It’s that time of year again where mustaches begin to flow for a good cause. For those who don’t know, here’s what Lacrosse Mustache Madness is in a nutshell:

Lacrosse Mustache Madness is an interactive online fundraiser encouraging student-athletes to TOSS their razors, GROW their mustaches, go HEAD to HEAD against teams country and RAISE money to HELP families.  Lax Stache Madness was created by former professional lacrosse player Ken Clausen while attending the University of Virginia. Marketed around his signature mustache, he believed that growing facial hair was a great way to make a difference while paying tribute to HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori.

Olympic Update: 6 v. 6 Rules Announced

World Lacrosse announced the rules for 6 v. 6 and Lax Sports Network breaks it down well. This is the form of lacrosse that will likely be played as a demonstration sport in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. I personally am on the side of having lacrosse in the Olympics, even if it’s a ‘different’ game but I understand the opposing view as well. How do you see it? Leave a comment below.

Eli Manning = Lax Dad

What began as a mild Sunday morning along the Wasatch Front quickly turned into chaos as everyone’s fourth favorite Manning (Archie, Peyton, Arch, Eli) tweeted that he was on his way to a ‘lax’ game. Of course, lacrosse twitter reacted and retweeted like crazy.

Brighton Girls Head Coach Melissa Nash

The latest podcast (available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify or listen above) features an interview with Brighton Girls Head Coach Melissa Nash. Nash hails from Salt Lake City an attended Highland while playing for Olympus. She went on to a great career at BYU and then was an assistant on the 2013 Skyline Girls Championship team. After some time off, Nash has risen through the ranks at Brighton, where she also teaches Health and is the Student Body Officer advisor. Nash is the UHSAA Girls Coaches Rep and US Lacrosse Girls Rep for Utah.

Inside Lacrosse Fall Invitational

Wasatch LC was in Maryland over the weekend to participate at the Inside Lacrosse Fall Invitational. In the High School Elite division, the 2021 team went 3-0 on Saturday, including an 8-7 win over Team 91 Carolina. On Sunday, the team went 0-3. The 2022s were 1-6 on the weekend.

Facility Updates

If you listened to the podcast above, then you’ll know that Brighton teams will have an indoor facility on campus to use in the winter months. Also, Lone Peak High School recently completed a soccer/lacrosse facility. Looks amazing!

Parting Thoughts

A few thoughts to conclude this newsletter:

* I spent Saturday in North Logan at the Skyfall tournament. What a venue! For those who haven’t been there, it is two turf fields with bleachers in the middle with a fence around both fields. I had never been there before and was really impressed. The venue reminded me that with a little bit of collaboration and creative thinking, anything can be accomplished. In this case, lacrosse and soccer parents joined forces with North Logan City to create an awesome place for lacrosse and soccer players to play. What are you doing to build collaborations with those around you personally, professionally and within the game of lacrosse? I’d love to know!

* In 2019, as Farmington approached the playoffs, we created shirts that had ‘One More’ on the back of them as a reminder to the players to look for one more pass, get one more ground ball, make one more save, etc. I think this concept still applies on the field, but I think it applies off the field as well. A few years ago I remember a friend asking what it would take for our sport to continue to grow. At the time, I felt that if each program in the state just gave ‘one more’ volunteer, referee, coach, etc., then the sport would grow. I remember going to games and seeing 5-6 coaches on the sidelines for Varsity and another 5-6 for JV. If just one of those people became a ref instead of coaching or went to a program with one coach, the sport would continue to grow. I’ve seen this happen to a certain extent, but there is room for improvement! The last list I saw had 5 vacant high school boys head coach positions and 11 vacant high school girls positions. An average program has 40 players so that’s 640 potential players without a program. Maybe it’s time to stop being the ‘goalie warmup coach’ at your alma mater and take your talents to another area that really needs it. (No offense goalies, we love you.)

* Take some time this week to thank a Veteran. The military has a unique bond within the lacrosse world and we get to celebrate Veterans one day a year. A simple text message goes a long way.

Westminster Head Coach Joe Kerwin Interview

A New Women’s Pro League

Athletes Unlimited announced this week that a new professional women’s league will be formed and play will begin on July 19, 2021. From the site:

Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse will play a short form, fast paced format consisting of eight-minute quarters, 9v9 gameplay and a 60-second shot clock all housed on an 80yd x 50yd playing field. Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse will be comprised of 56 players that will roster four teams of 14 players each. Play will begin with draws at the beginning of each quarter as well as after every goal.

This will be interesting to follow as the professional women’s game continues to try and find a foothold.

News & Notes

I had the opportunity to attend practice last week for Utah. It was the first one I’d been to this year for a variety of reasons, but it felt very familiar! The team was flying around the field and I can’t wait for Utah, and all teams, to play again this spring.

Some sad news from Fresno State.

The Bulldogs had four Utahns on the 2020 squad. Two were Seniors last year (Tiffiny Wallace/Brighton, Marina Mayo/Park City) and two were Freshman (Portia Card/American Fork, Danielle Westerman/Viewmont).

Several boys and girls high school teams are looking for coaches. If you’re interested, refer to the district or school website or reach out to the athletic director at the school you’re interested in.

UVU Head Coach Brian Barnhill

My latest podcast (available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify or listen above) features Utah Valley Head Coach Brian Barnhill. I first met Barnhill at Alta when his son Mason was a close defenseman who then went on to Corner Canyon. I’ve always loved to talk to Barnhill about lacrosse because he brings a fresh perspective and is very humble. We talk about how he became the coach at UVU, what the Wolverines have been up to, the culture at UVU, favorite lacrosse memories (hint: it involves an upset of a No. 1 ranked team) and more.

Wasatch Invitational

This weekend was a busy one! The Wasatch Invitational was in full swing at Galena Park. The Boys HS Elite division featured 17 teams and the Boys HS Open division had 10 teams from Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, California, Montana and Washington. NCAA, NJCAA and MCLA coaches from as far as Florida were also on hand to view the talent assembled. In the Elite bracket, 212 Lacrosse went undefeated en route to a 6-5 win over OC Crush. The True Utah 2024 team were the Open division champions after beating Colorado Chill, 7-5.

“This years Wasatch Invitational was a huge success and the growth has been exponential,” said Danny Larkin, who with his brother Ricky, host the event. “Bringing high level club teams from all over the West and top college coaches from across the entire country to Utah is our goal with the Wasatch Invitational. The college coaches were very impressed with the level of play in Utah.”

“It was really amazing to see teams coming from multiple states for this high school only event that brought out twelve plus different college programs,” said Ricky Larkin. “The overall level of competition was solid in both divisions. College coaches all were very impressed with the talent out here, and that’s what these players from the West need: more exposure.”

Aloha Tournament

The Aloha Tournament also took place this weekend. At the girls high school level, Force Elite won the event with a 3-0-1 record which is no surprise after seeing ball movement like this and a sweet BTB finish.

In the Boys High School division, ADVNC San Fransisco 2022 took first with a 4-0 record.

News & Notes

Can we talk about a game-changing moment for Westminster Men’s & Women’s programs? Let there be light!

Yes, that’s right, we’ll finally be able to enjoy a night game at Dumke Stadium.

Also, don’t forget to check out the girls Super 7s. They have a couple more weeks left with championships on October 20/21. Side note: I’ve been to my share of cold lacrosse games, but the Super 7s Championship I went to in 2014 or maybe 2015 was the coldest I have ever been, but don’t let that sway you. Go check out the games!

My last thought comes from an experience I had about a week ago. I had listed a fly-fishing net on Facebook Marketplace and a person had inquired about it. We went back and forth, trying to find a good time and eventually did. I got out of my car and he was wearing a Johns Hopkins lacrosse jacket. I asked if he had played at Hopkins and he had. He is living locally and teleworking. We later exchanged emails and he’s on his way to becoming part of OUR community. The worldwide lacrosse community is special. The national lacrosse community is unlike any other sport. And our local community is outstanding, but we can be better. While many who have been involved in the sport may say we are huge and we are sanctioned, we must not rest on one’s laurels! We need to continue to be welcoming and inclusive, no matter what. To those who are new to the sport, please ask questions! My story also serves as a great reminder to treat everyone with respect no matter what. You never know if the person that gets out of the other car will have a Hopkins, or insert school name, lacrosse jacket on.

Interview w/ Danny Larkin

My interview on the podcast this week is with Danny Larkin. Danny and his twin brother Ricky, played high school lacrosse at Olympus before playing at DeSales (NCAA D-III) in Pennsylvania. The twins then came back to join Westminster en route to a MCLA D-II title in 2008. Danny spoke about his time at these three schools as well as Wasatch LC and more. Lacrosse in Utah News/Notes

A couple locals got national attention this week. At the Adrenaline Black Card event, Berkley Horoba (Alta) made the 2023/2024 all-star team while Bodi Sutherland (Corner Canyon) made the 2021/2022 all-star team. Trae Ika (Corner Canyon) and Blake Franckowiak (Corner Canyon) played for West Coast Starz at the Adrenaline Platinum Cup. True Utah went 1-2 at the Adrenaline Platinum Cup in Delaware over the weekend.

Jon King (Corner Canyon) and Thomas Vandenberg (Park City) played at the Crab Feast with the Mad Dog 22’ National Team.

Dylan Bauer (Park City) was awarded the Jeremy Huber 19 Award. Huber unexpectedly passed away in 2015 while a player at Johns Hopkins. Huber was from Las Vegas and was a standout player.

In other local action, Tribal West successfully hosted the Salt City Classic last weekend with several teams participating. The Ski Town Shootout begins this weekend. Find out more info here.

PLL Update

It was a big week for the league as it finished up pool play. Here’s how things shook out:

* Whipsnakes 4-0, +24

* Chrome 3-1, + 5

* Archers 3-1, -2

* Redwoods 2-2, -3

* Waterdogs 1-3, -3

* Atlas 1-3, -10

* Chaos 0-4, -11

The Whipsnakes are maybe the least talked about team but obviously the best. Their closest game was their first, a 13-9 win over Redwoods. They dismantled Archers yesterday in the second half en route to a 17-11 win. They didn’t dominate last year en route to their championship, so what is the difference this year? There are a couple: 1) Zed Williams and 2) the bubble format.

Zed Williams - Last year, Rambo led the team with 49 points while Mike Chanenchuk had 34, Ryan Drenner had 21 followed by Ben Reeves with 16. Basically, Rambo had to carry the team (which he did, winning the MVP). This year is different. In 12 games last season, Rambo averaged 4.08 points per game with the next highest being Chanenchuk with 2.83. While Rambo is averaging more points per game this year (5.25, including a 10 point game over the Archers) Williams is helping to carry the load with 4.25 points per game. John Haus in the midfield is also helping Chanenchuk who both have 10 points. Simply put, there is more point sharing with the Whipsnakes which makes them even scarier. The big question for the offseason is do you break up the Maryland pro team? What would be the justification?

The Bubble - Also known as PLL Island, being isolated and playing a short schedule plays into hot teams. Lacrosse games are known to have scoring runs, but so do seasons. Over the course of a normal season where you are traveling all across the country, your team is bound to have better weeks than others. In the bubble, the hot team will reign and that hot team is the Whipsnakes. As good as the Archers are (and as good as we want them to be) they entered the final game with an OT win over Chrome, a two goal win over Waterdogs and a one goal win over Atlas. So the Whipsnakes enter the bubble with the MVP, the gold badge on their jersey and became the hottest team, including the hottest goalie (Bernlohr) and face-off specialist (Nardella). Dethroning the champs will be difficult.

Grant Ament has been a standout (if you listened to the podcast with Adam Ghitleman, you would know this already) but this clip is awesome!

US Lacrosse Magazine broke down the group play round.

Play resumes on Tuesday with Chrome taking on Chaos (3:30 pm, NBC Sports Gold), Redwoods v. Waterdogs (6:00 pm, NBC Sports Gold) and Atlas v. Archers (8:30 pm, NBC Sports Network).

Good afternoon lacrosse fans! It was great to see live lacrosse on TV this weekend and I hope you had a chance to watch some of the MLL games. If you did, you likely saw Denver Outlaws defender and Utah native Garrett Michaeli on the field in the two Denver wins. I had a chance to talk to Michaeli last week for the podcast. You can subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify or listen above. Michaeli was a star defenseman at Alta and Corner Canyon before heading to play lacrosse at Rutgers. We talk about his high school, college and now pro lacrosse experiences. Michaeli is just the second Utahn to play lacrosse at the pro level. Hope you enjoy the podcast!

MLL Results & Notes

Michaeli and the Outlaws are 2-0 and sit at the top of the standings with the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Boston is 1-0 while Connecticut, New York and Philadelphia are winless.

Philadelphia plays Connecticut today (right around when this newsletter gets published) and Boston faces Chesapeake at 5:00 p.m. MT. There are games all week so be sure to check the schedule here.

Former Utah attackman Colin Burke had a hat-trick in his pro debut.

Two goals from Sunday made the Top 10 on SportsCenter.

For those who didn’t watch or who don’t keep up on the league, the teams are on different sidelines so substitutions are done on opposite sides of the field. It creates some interesting opportunities for transition but there were a handful of times players were confused including this play (which was also a Top 10 play):

Needless to say, I don’t think opposite side benches will be a think post-COVID.

The Premier Lacrosse League players arrived in Utah yesterday and will have a short training camp followed up the opening game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. on NBC. The game will feature the Redwoods and Whipsnakes. The game will be followed by Choas and Chrome squaring off at 5:30 p.m. on NBCSN. It’s a great read about ‘The Last Line of Defense’ on a team. Fun fact: I coached at Cottonwood in the Spring of 2007. The team was a great group and our goalie was (and still is) a stud. Due to low numbers, he started a game with a broken thumb. During the game he broke the other thumb. He wouldn’t come out of the game and I’ve admired him for that ever since.

I’m really excited about this podcast with Mason Goodhand. Goodhand has been part of the Utah lacrosse scene from the beginning and there are some great tidbits in this episode for any level of lacrosse fan. Please give it a listen! Just a reminder, you can subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

As a spoiler, Goodhand mentions that he was part of the Vail shootout when it was in Aspen. Inside Lacrosse & ESPN analyst Quint Kessenich wrote about the Vail lacrosse shootout ‘When Vail Was King’. It’s a great read and provides a little insight into the tournament and lacrosse in the West. Goodhand was one of the first to create a ‘club/travel’ team called Team Utah and the only tournament they would go to was the Vail shootout.

Goodhand also mentions when Westminster beat BYU in 2015. It was the first in-state loss that BYU had ever had. You can read the recap here. I was there and it was a great game. One of my favorite lacrosse pictures I’ve ever taken came from that game as well. BYU attackman Mike Fabrizio loved to creep around the crease from X in this shot he did so but Westminster was up the task with Trent Herbert and Dalton Tuor defending the play.

Fairman Family Lacrosse Camp

This year’s camp will build upon the amazing groundwork we established in 2019 as we have decided to do a more intensive 1-week camp where we build upon the new skills we learn and perfect each day.

It’s time to give back to the next generation of Utah lacrosse athletes the only way we know how and help them achieve the next level in their path and continue to grow the game. This is our commitment.

We will also be ending the five-day session with a talk about recruiting and playing at all NCAA levels.

Pro Lacrosse Coverage

The MLL announced that it will play a one week tournament at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium from July 18 - 26. Utah native Garrett Michaeli (Corner Canyon/Rutgers) will suit up for the Denver Outlaws while former University of Utah attackman Colin Burke will play for the New York Lizards.

The PLL season is getting closer and their content team continues to deliver.

Adam Ghitelman Interview

IMLAX High School League

The IMLAX high school league began play last weekend with games on Friday and Saturday. You can see the scores at imlaxutah.org. Here are the standings (W-L-T):
