Black Empowerment, Unitarian Universalism, and an Embodied Path to Healing, a sermon by guest speaker Ariel Aaronson-Eves.

"The General Assemblies of the late 1960’s were hotly contested events, particularly as the Unitarian Universalist Association was deciding how to respond to the rising Black Power movement. In honor of Black History Month we will take a look at this period of our history, focusing on the tensions and traumas embodied in the controversy, and begin to develop body practices that may help us to heal our racialized trauma and ancestral wounds."

"Who determines what makes it into the news, and why? When I was a TV reporter this was pretty much based on what we always covered—accidents, murders, scandals, and recurring events, almost with liturgical faithfulness. Mostly it was up to our news directors and producers (and consultants) to determine, presumptively, what they thought viewers cared about. But I still wonder, as I did then, why so much, seemingly more important matters, gets left out of the coverage? In this sermon I’ll explore a better paradigm for determining what the headlines should be."

"Dance is one of the many art forms to ​get around​ this compulsion to put ourselves (and eachother) in boxes. It's a way to connect, beyond the same-old scripts of everyday life, an embodied form of storytelling. The most beautiful stories, whatever the medium, can take us out of our boxes, hold up a mirror, give us a sense of community. They ​reveal​. When I tell you a story about the world, you get a glimpse from my eyes. When I tell you a story about myself, the“us” between us changes. When you allow a story into your heart and body, ​you​ are changed."

"If the authoritarian mindset is mirrored by its punitive response to criminal justice, then ours is the most authoritarian nation in human history. As a result, many in our society, both conservatives and liberals, consider prosecution and punishment the appropriate, if not exclusive, response to crime and wrongdoing. If we are to ever become the egalitarian society our belief in democracy calls us toward, we must break free of this punitive paradigm to envision and execute a better way."
