Crowds are normally associated with success. Those who attract crowds are the successful. There’s nothing as exhilarating as popularity. Stardom is the prize. So, why did Jesus deliberately separate Himself from crowds? The very thing that enamors and attracts us is the very thing that Jesus intentionally avoided. He was locked into the face among the faces, the person being jammed in throng had His attention.

Why did Jesus choose a team of just twelve? He was more popular than a mere dozen men. He could draw a small group by just going on a beach walk. Why THESE men particularly? None of them were first round selections. 

Band of Brethren teaches us of the exponential power of small. The church could take their que from Mark 3:13-19 as to how Jesus operates powerfully on a scale that looks meager but in fact is dynamically deep and far reaching.  Often people believe that God accepts them because they are “good”. Living by the Golden Rule, being nice to others, and even being religious can give a soul a sense of internal security that all is well. Doing good can actually be a barrier between you and God. Doing good might provide temporary spiritual ease. Doing good can worsen when it feeds personal and/or spiritual pride. Meet some of the best do-gooders on the planet in Mark 3:1-6.  Jesus took issue with them! He will do the same with anyone who trusts that doing good puts them on higher moral ground and deeper levels of spirituality than the not-so-good.

Good people may think they are wearing the white hat when in fact they are sporting the black hat. They did in this case.  

Desperation. That’s the place you land when you have lost all hope. When you see no way out, despair becomes that constant sinking feeling in your gut. It can’t get any worse for this person we read about in Mark’s gospel (1:40-45). Life is HORRIBLE for this guy. Diseased. Ostracized. Hopeless. Desperate. Was his presenting problem the real problem? It is that, but there is more to the story than meets the eye. Desperation can be invitation to experience the God who loves you. We all need a word and a touch from the Almighty and compassionate Lord. Your desperation triggers His response and reach. Here’s how…
