  • Vape Radio 71: Vaping Super Star Grimm Green Shares Thoughts on Hardwarel!
To say that I’m jazzed about today’s show is an understatement! At VAPE radio and VapeMentors we are proud to know some of the most amazing people that we call friends. Today you’ll be hearing from one of them.
His name is Nick Green, but you may know him by his nickname “Grimm.” He’s been part of our VAPE U classes and we interviewed him last year, which I referenced in our call if you’d like to check out show #43.
What started as a brief 20-minute call went much longer and we actually broke up our conversation into two parts. Today is part I. So with that as my intro, let’s rock!
    What you’ll hear today:

Grimm started posting on YouTube in 2009 when they were the“Dark Ages”
Tobacco can be difficult to kick 100%, so you should always be aware of the temptation
How Grimm decides on which products to review
If he finds an inferior product, he will share the bad and the good
Grimm likes the Herakles Plus Sub-Ohm TC Tank by Sense, but was annoyed at their release of a slightly modified and calling them all different
He also is a fan of the (US made) Dotmod Petri Atomizer, but they are expensive
The Mutation X RDA Rebuildable Atomizer by Indulgence is a cheap and original Chinese product
The Kennedy Vapor Ruby Mod is very high quality; Grimm loves it!
    Talking points:

Hardware manufacturers are still calling minor upgrades a“new version”
Manufacturers: find ONE model that offers the best of several others
We have developed into a nation of connoisseurs who will spend “top dollar” ($200 plus) for a mod
    Sometakeaways:

He prefers to review products that he would like to use or buy himself and does not solicit from manufacturers
American manufacturers have a hard time competing on price
Clones are more rare as Chinese companies are developing their own products
Hardware prices are going down. Who changed the game? Jayboand their collaborator, Wismec who released the Reuleaux. It retails for about$40-$50 but rocks! A good deal compared to the Vaporflask product.
We asked: What are the top products that all vape shops should carry?: Nick likes the Innokin line because they are geared to SMOKERS.

Part II will be posting shortly.

  • Vape Radio 70: The Most Common Questions We Get, PLUS Events & More!
Today’s show will update you on the state of the market in many sectors, so let’s get started with events.

We’ve seen lots of changes in the events space over the past few years. Just until mid-year, we have almost 30, including “middle America” areas like Western PA, Wichita, KS, Charlotte, NC, and St. Charles, IL. We also have the customary hot spots like Miami, Las Vegas and Southern California.

I recently attended one that created a new space and was a REAL B2B event, called Vape Shop Events, a sort of speed dating for vaping. Here’s some details and we’ll have a show on this in a few weeks.

    It’s by invite only
Promoter pay for buyers to attend
Everyone eats together and meets face to face for 20 minutes
Next one: Park City, UT in April
They’ve been doing this for over a decade in different industries
I was introduced to tobacco free nicotine (synthetic nicotine) and was intrigued and excited about the possibilities of a more pure form of nicotine. We’ll have a show on that coming up, too.

We’ll be spending a lot of time on liquids on VAPE Radio. WHY? Because you’ll see a huge shake up in this sector for quite some time.

We get lots of questions here at VapeMentors and VAPE radio and I thought I’d address some of the most common ones:

What kind of permits and license do you need to 1) start a liquid co. and 2) open a shop?
Is it too late to get into the business or has that opportunity passed?
How can I be sure that the liquid I buy is not tainted? TESTING
All these answers are inside our show!

Some good news and stats: January, 2016 was our second best month ever for downloads, with 131,847, a great start for a brand new year! For all of 2015 we finished with almost 822,000.

  • Vape Radio 69: The Epidemic of Vape Space Lawsuits
There is a problem in this country and it has become epidemic in the vaping industry: the increasing number of lawsuits.

We are the most free society in the world, but sometimes we have too many freedoms. One of them is the ability to sue anyone you wish, whether you have grounds or not. Someone does you wrong? You sue. Were you guilty or were you not? It doesn’t matter, you still must defend yourself.

This show is an interview with by attorney Ryan McQueeney with ARNETT LAW GROUP, LLC in Chicago. McQueeney has been involved with Diacetyl lawsuits for over a decade and defended the REAL microwave popcorn manufacturers where some injuries did take place and employees got the first cases of popcorn lung.

He offers his experience as well as his opinions on popcorn lung, bogus lawsuits and rightful causes. Check it out and share your thoughts.

    What you’ll hear today:

The first case of popcorn lung goes back to the early 2000’s. Nine out of 250 workers contracted the ailment at the plant
There were about 100 different ingredients that made up the butter flavoring. Diacetyl was the most prevalent and was the “smoking gun”
There are no guidelines as to what level of Diacetyl is “acceptable”
Most vape lawsuits are based on lack of warning (consumer law) rather than damage caused
Diacetyl is more prevalent in analog cigarettes than liquids, but smokers are damaged by worse injuries than popcorn lung
    Talking points:

An adequate warning label may keep you away from trouble
Some believe we will major health issues in vapers over time
    Some takeaways:

Be sure you have comprehensive warning labels
Having your products tested by a lab is a good idea.
Be careful what you put on your web sites and marketing material as well within internal communication
It is best to take a defensive position regarding liability
Get any and all harmful ingredients out of your products and, take the high road and know that you are a target for litigation whether you want to be or not
Get insurance! We recommend CalCo Commercial Insurance

  • Vape Radio 68: Interview with an FDA Legal Expert & An Activist Vape Shop Owner
It's the Big Dogs vs. the Little Ones- the FDA vs. US- as we share two amazing interviews from two different perspectives. One is from the view of a brick & mortar shop owner and how they have been affected by regulations. The other is from one of the most esteemed vaping legal expert in the country.
    What you’ll hear today:

Reports from OMB hearing participants and their feedback
The Montana Quit Line is promoting incorrect information and propaganda
The FDA was forced to address a new invention: e-cigarettes, and they had no idea how to do that
E-cigs were initially considered “drug delivery devices” until the Supreme Court decided against that
A draft of the FDA rules were leaked by an organization called TVECA. Catch VAPE radio show #65 with Tom Kiklas for details on that
The OMB got successively more educated with each hearing
The FDA may be just regulators but not enforcers
A coalition called Right to Be Smoke Free Coalition, (www.r2bsmokefree.org)  formed to fight the pending laws in Indiana and the possible FDA decision
Insight about the aggressive Indiana state agency’s efforts to control vape shops
After July 1, 2016 it may be impossible to sell liquids in Indiana
    Talking points:

You cannot sit by without getting involved
It doesn’t matter where you live. There are opportunities and challenges everywhere
It may be possible to still meet with OMB in Washington, DC
Many items were NOT addressed in these new regs
Brick & mortar shops may be less impacted; e-liquids will be affected more and consumers will have less choices
You’ll see consolidation and closures in the future
Did these hearing make a difference or was it a façade? You decide.

I hope you got some value of these interviews as well as the last show with Five Pawns. This battle is far from over so it’s time for everyone to get onboard and get involved.

    Some Takeaways:

    Get Involved!
Pay attention to negative press and try to overcome it
If you’d like to hear Azim’s one-hour FDA update webinar, please contact [email protected]
If the regs go through as planned, vaping products would be considered tobacco products, and liquid manufacturers would be considered tobacco manufacturers
The vape space will be very dynamic for many years to come
We should be proactive, not reactive in this fight

  • Vape Radio 67: Five Pawns E-liquid Co. Shares their Washington, DC OMB experience
    What you’ll hear today:

“It’s hard to play the game when you don’t know the rules.” That encapsulates Part I of our two-parter which includes interviews from those that went to Washington to testify
Founders and owners, Rodney Jerabek and Rob Fitzgerald from Five Pawns share their experiences and insight
    The OMB did listen…
The industry has changed since our first interview with Five Pawns in September, 2014
These hearings were about financial impact
The majority of the marketplace would not be able to adapt to the new regs
Tens of thousands of jobs could be lost if things go forward as proposed
We cannot “play the game” until we understand the rules

Part II will continue with more insight from those that were there plus we’ll introduce you to some new VapeMentors offering, including the 2016 Vaping Industry Survival Guide.

We were named one of the Top Ten 2015 Business Podcasts by Podbean from over 120,000 podcasting shows.
What’s your story? Is it a success one or a challenge? We want to hear it and share it next year. Send me a note to [email protected].

The last show of 2015, thanks all for helping us hit 1 million downloads on 12/12/15.

    In this episode:
FDA and OMB updates from Washington, DC. What happened?  In the next few shows you’ll hear live interviews from several that testified. Including me.
Is the vape space going away? New events in Ireland and Russia, plus Vape Show Events. This is by invitation only and brings together 27 sellers (manufacturers) and 20 buyers to meet privately. Next event: La Jolla (CA), Jan. 24-27.
Develop your own house brand in just eight (8) weeks with all the work done for you. For free. If you are unsure if your current manufacturer will pass FDA muster, contact me at [email protected]
Problems in Washington state are discussed as the health department prevents sampling in some counties, and Quebec, Canada just passed a strict rule as well
    What does the future hold??
Vaping may go underground and create a Black Market.

Stories of struggle and victory are shared:
The Vaping Store recently opened in Lake Worth, FL. Listen to what they went through along with The Vape Factor in Davie, FL, who finally opened after almost one year of planning. Captain Obvious found out that their e-liquids were being diluted to make a different nic level...

In the WIN category, Route One in New Hampshire hit massive numbers in the first year. VAPE Mags are now at Barnes and Nobles nationwide, plus 15,000 shops. Von Vapes interview shares their new investor helping to fund expansion and how they got there.
