Vasectomies work. Almost every single time. So how do men still get their partners pregnant after one? The mistake isn't the surgery. It happens in the weeks after, when men assume they're already in the clear.
In this episode, I'm going to walk you through the three specific mistakes men make after a vasectomy that lead to unplanned pregnancies, and explain exactly what confirmed sterility actually looks like.
⏱️ TIMESTAMPS
0:00 This Common Post-Vasectomy Mistake Gets Her Pregnant
0:58 What actually happens in your body after the cut
1:40 Why leftover sperm is still viable for weeks
2:00 Mistake one, stopping contraception too soon
3:23 Why the semen analysis is the real confirmation
4:38 A real patient story on why testing matters
5:19 Mistake two, treating the appointment as the result
6:00 Mistake three, testing too early or stopping after one clear
7:42 What confirmed sterility actually requires
❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Can you get someone pregnant after a vasectomy?
Yes. Sperm above the cut remains viable for weeks or months after the procedure until your body fully clears it. Pregnancies happen when men stop using contraception before that clearing is confirmed with a semen analysis.
How do you know when a vasectomy is confirmed successful?
A vasectomy is confirmed only after two semen analysis results come back completely clear of sperm. One clear result is good news, but two clear results in hand is the actual confirmation.
How long after a vasectomy do you need to use contraception?
You need to use contraception until you have two clear semen analysis results in hand, which typically takes several weeks to months depending on your body. The exact timing and testing schedule should come from your doctor.

Most men calling to book a vasectomy think the consultation is just paperwork before the real appointment. It is not. What happens in that exam room can change your entire surgical plan, and in rare cases, it can catch something far more serious than anything related to the vasectomy itself.
In this episode, I'm going to explain what actually happens during a real vasectomy consultation, why the physical exam matters more than most men realize, and share a true patient story that shows exactly why skipping it is a mistake.

❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
What happens during a vasectomy consultation?
A physician performs a focused physical exam to locate the vas deferens on each side, check for scar tissue or anatomical differences, and build a surgical plan specific to your body. It is not just paperwork or a scheduling step.
Why is a physical exam before a vasectomy important?
Every man's anatomy is different, including the depth of the vas deferens and prior scar tissue from hernia repair, sports injuries, or previous surgery. A careful exam catches these differences before you are on the table, which affects both safety and recovery.
Can a vasectomy consultation catch something serious?
Yes. During a routine consultation, a physician may find something unrelated to the vasectomy itself, such as a testicular lump that requires further evaluation before any procedure proceeds.

Most men who delay booking a vasectomy consultation aren't worried about the procedure itself. They're worried it will lower their testosterone, kill their sex drive, or take something away from their sex life they can't get back.
After more than 30,000 procedures, we can tell you with complete confidence that fear is not supported by how a vasectomy actually works.
In this episode, we're going to show you exactly why the testosterone myth is wrong, starting with what the procedure actually does inside your body.

2:08 Where testosterone is really produced
3:01 Why testosterone can't be affected by a vasectomy

4:15 What actually happens to ejaculation and semen volume

7:39 What to ask at your own consultation
❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Does a vasectomy lower testosterone?
No. Testosterone is produced in the testicles and travels through your bloodstream. A vasectomy only cuts and seals the vas deferens, a tube that carries sperm, so it has no connection to your hormone system at all.
Does a vasectomy affect sex drive or erections?
No. Sex drive is controlled by testosterone and erections depend on nerve signals and blood flow, none of which travel through the vas deferens. Both systems keep working exactly as they did before the procedure.
Will a vasectomy change ejaculation or semen volume?
No noticeable change for most men. Sperm makes up a very small part of total semen volume, while the seminal vesicles and prostate produce the majority of it and are completely untouched by the procedure.

Vasectomy Clinics of Chicago has performed more than 30,000 vasectomies across five Chicagoland locations.
