Middling play from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and the defensive secondary unit had the 49ers sitting at 3-5 by the halfway point of what seemed to be another lost season in Santa Clara. However, a Week 10 blowout win over the Rams began a 7-2 run for San Fran that ended with them securing the final NFC Playoff Spot at 10-7. Their improvement from their 2020 injury-riddled season became even larger with upsets over the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs to get as far as the NFC Championship Game. However, their surprise bid for a Super Bowl return would fall short in a heartbreaking loss to their division-rival LA Rams.
