Awarded a Royal Navy Bursary to complete a degree in Animal Sciences at London University, Ned served as a Seaman Officer for eight years in a variety roles, from diver to navigator.

On leaving the armed forces he completed a self-funded one-year full-time MBA at the Cranfield School of Management, leading to a commercial management position at International Paints, the marine coatings division of Akzo Nobel.

After three years he had the opportunity to transfer to the Veterinary Pharmaceuticals division of Akzo Nobel and so began his 20-plus year career in the Animal Health industry returning to his university degree roots. During this time Ned has held a number of senior commercial roles with category leading businesses including Pfizer and Pets at Home.

In 2017 Ned embraced the opportunity to leverage his industry experience as UK Country Manager for the European generic pharmaceutical company Krka, building a solid and growing market position for the brand in the UK, under his leadership.

Launched to its first cohort in July 2021, The Virtual Veterinary Internship – run by the US-based Veterinary Information Network – is an international online course designed to help support and guide new graduates or vets returning to the profession.

The course was created in response to a growing sense of job dissatisfaction and poor welfare among young vets in practice, with aims of keeping them in the profession. It includes both clinical and non-clinical elements, and allocates each of its virtual interns a mentor – an experienced working professional who will help to guide them through the early stages of their career.

Tori graduated from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (R[D]SVS) at the University of Edinburgh in 2008.

After several years in general practice she completed a rotating internship at The University of Liverpool before completing residency training with Hilary Jackson and Peter Forsythe at The Dermatology Referral Service in Glasgow. She re-joined R(D)SVS in August 2022.

Recognition for veterinary dentistry in general practice has increased in the past few years – an important development given 80% of dogs and cats aged three or older suffer dental disease.

She then became the clinical nursing manager at Vets Now referrals in Glasgow and moved on to become national referral nursing lead (UK referrals division) for IVC Evidensia.

Arlene is involved in managing business-critical projects for IVC, but referral nursing is never far from her thoughts, and she continues to champion the role and development of referral nurses.

He is a clinical director at Stable Close Equine Practice in Winchester, a practice he co-founded in 2003 and has since built into a leading first opinion practice, providing veterinary care to a wide range of horses across Hampshire.

Outside of clinical practice, he also maintains a broad interest in the veterinary profession and is currently president of the British Veterinary Association with a theme of “Investing in People”.

IMV – more than just imaging

Strangles, caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi, is one of the most frequently diagnosed infectious diseases of horses across the world. It is highly contagious and is one of the most common equine respiratory diseases in the UK, with an estimated 600 outbreaks in the UK alone.

Here we are joined by Andrew Waller, chief scientific officer at Intervacc AB, the company that developed the strangles vaccine, Strangvac.

He will be talking to us about vaccination guidelines in the face of a strangles outbreak and how vaccination, alongside good stable management and biosecurity procedures, can play a really important role in improving herd immunity and reducing the number of strangles cases in the equine population, thereby preventing major economic loss to the equestrian industry.

Andrew studied the evolution, transmission and prevention of Streptococcus equi for more than 17 years in his role as head of bacteriology at the AHT.

He collaborates with world-leading researchers in more than 20 countries around the world and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers on streptococcal infections of animals, using these research findings to develop novel diagnostic tests and vaccines with which to improve animal health.

Dr Waller joined Intervacc AB in Stockholm, Sweden, as chief scientific officer in 2020, where he continues to work towards making the lives of animals better.
