  • Care Packages For Our Troops with Navy Veteran Chelsea Mandello
Chelsea Mandello is the founder and CEO of Troopster Military Care Packages. A veteran, Chelsea served in the U.S. Navy as a Photojournalist for 7 years, where she travelled more than 13 countries.  Additionally she travelled across 9 different ships reporting the Navy's story. Consequently, it was during a difficult deployment in 2013 that Chelsea recognized the need for a personalized care package solution that led to the launching of Troopster in 2015.
“My job was to tell the navy’s story; it was an awesome job.” – Chelsea Mandello
Chelsea Mandello- Hard & Fast Transition
During active duty, Chelsea founded Troopster when she was active duty.  She was in a remote area where receiving mail and packages was difficult and took a lot of coordination.  As a result, the packages were “heartbroken” and items had gone bad and escaped the original intent of the care package.  Chelsea researched for 2 years and developed a business plan as to what a care package company should look like. Consequently, Troopster was founded.
    Chain of Command
Mandello got lucky with her chain of command who was very supportive of her effort whole being active duty.  She engaged in entrepreneurial classes with Boots to Business that were offered.  Chelsea was very open with her command about her endeavors and as a result found that they were very helpful and accepting unlike other chains of command.
“I love what I do; It feels like I have the absolute best job in the world; I get to connect mom's, dad’s, spouse’s with their troops to make personalized care packages , add photos and send directly overseas.” – Chelsea Mandello
    Growing a Business
To date, excluding holiday months, Troopsters sells approximately 700 packages throughout the year and even more, the donations sent out are 4 times that amount.  Troopsters is ramping up their donations  drive and Chelsea currently does not take a salary. In 2019 she is looking to expanding with more staff, developing a board who believes in Troopster's mission and becoming internationally known.

  • Asset Protection for Real Estate Investors with Scott Smith
Scott Smith is a real estate investor and asset protection attorney in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Albany Law School and began his career in high-stakes corporate litigation. He is the founder and CEO of Royal Legal Solutions, serving investors and companies across the US. With experience in entrepreneurship, starting several successful companies and owning real estate in 10 states, Scott will pull from his expertise as a lawyer to put a new and valuable perspective on business ownership.

Scott Smith – Fight or Flight

Scott graduated with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and was unsuccessful in securing a job right out of college.  As a result, Scott competed in the MMA for a couple of years. He then transitioned to real estate investing for 8 years and then did litigation work for 4 years.  Scott was now doing legal fighting; playing what he called “mental chess.”

“The mental side of fighting, that’s the part that is draining.  When you have the flight or fight response, your brain doesn’t really know that much of a difference between when I’m stepping inside a cage versus when I’m stepping inside a courtroom.  There’s still the same attack mentality ad defense mentality and the fight of flight is in there the whole time.” – Scott Smith
    Final Transition
Scott then transitioned back to real estate investing after burning out and becoming fatigued.  It was a natural transition. He now helps others with asset protection which is a level of protection that if you’re sued you don’t need to worry about it.  His business he realized that most real estate investors and entrepreneurs have no idea how to use the law to insulate themselves.  Scott assist clients in tax saving strategies to help pay for everything that Royal Legal Solutions can provide.
    Legal Strategy
The first legal question is regarding setting up an LLC.  Scott shares that most people have an idea for a business and they form an LLC.  He advises to keep it simple. Set up your LLC and then file S-Corporation with the IRS. You then become an employee of the S-Corporation.  Finally, you will need to file a separate tax return.

“You will save yourself over 15% on self-employment tax..” – Scott Smith

Paul knew leadership, team building and soft skills from the military. Hence, Paul wanted to learn the numbers.

“We want to serve, we love leadership, we love camaraderie, we love building things and I think it lends itself very much and translates into the civilian world.” – Paul Capon

  • Drone Technology with Marine Corps Veteran Dan Burton
Dan Burton is the Founder and CEO of DroneBase, the largest global drone operations, which provides businesses with stunning aerial information to make better, real-time decisions about their most critical assets. Under Burtons vision and leadership, DroneBase has become the trusted, go-to drone platform for aerial images and data for worldwide enterprise clients. As a result, the company has grown its global pilot network 10x year over year, has completed 100,000 commercial flights, and has raised capital from top VC firms including Union Square Ventures, Upfront, and SkyFund (the joint venture between Accel and DJI).

Dan Burton – Drones in the Business World

Before founding DroneBase, Dan Burton analyzed industries for global corporations on Goldman Sachs Technology, Media & Telecom Group. He initially became a drone enthusiast during his service as a Marine Infantry Officer in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2007 - 2011. While in the Marines, the drone industry was just getting started and he watched it grow from the likes of the first desktop computers to iPhones. Burton started his career as a Special Projects Assistant in the U.S. Senate. Burton has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts from New York University.

“For any veteran, the transition may be under-appreciated; that’s a difficult thing.” – Dan Burton
    Quick Transition
The transition from the Marine Corps to Harvard Business School definitely came up quick for Dan.  He loves the USMC and everything it stands for. Dan lived in New York during September 11 and saw it all happen.  As a result, the events of 9-11 caused Dan to take a deeper look at his military training.  Consequently, he realized that in the USMC their drone technology was second to none.

“Drone technology that was miniaturizing and computerizing; I really believe that it would transform the business world.” – Dan Burton
    Starting a Business
Dan initially left the finance world with no income and no healthcare to start his business.  Hence, the clock was ticking but he was passionate about his belief drone technology could transform the business world.  He sought out anyone who was doing commercial drone operations including veterans who had worksites and started doing work for free to put his company out there.

“It’s really hard to start a business; I would only recommend doing it if there is a problem you really want to see solved.” – Dan Burton

  • Training Hollywood Actors with Marine Veteran and Actor Dale Dye
Dale Dye,  is a Hollywood actor, military advisor and founder of Warriors Inc. Dale shares with host Joe Crane, his military career and how he got involved in Hollywood and eventually advised and landed roles in Platoon, Band of Brothers, Born on the 4th of July, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, The Pacific and many more great military movies.

Dale Dye – In the Beginning

Retired Marine Captain Dale Dye started his journey in 1964 as a high school student at the Missouri Military Academy.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps and became an 81mm mortarman with the 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton.  In 1965 he went to Vietnam for a few months and then returned to the states.  Dale took an interest in a Marine Corps correspondent that was taking pictures and eventually changed his MOS to public affairs. He served in Vietnam from 1967 as a combat correspondent until he was hit the third time in May of 1970, serving for 33 months.  Dale received 3 Purple Hearts.

“We had to be wherever the shooting was going on and that is where we wanted to be.” – Dale Dye
Seeing the War Through a Different Lens
As a combat correspondent, Dale saw the war through a lens that the average Marine didn’t.  He was able to go anywhere and do anything as long as he could provide a human interest story for the hometown newspapers.  He had proven himself in his field and eventually was persuaded to go to Quantico to Officer Candidate School.

“After the war I was all over the world doing all kinds of assignments .” – Dale Dye
    Soldier of Fortune
After retiring, Soldier of Fortune Magazine contacted Dale and hired him to be an Executive Editor.  They sent him all over the world, primarily to Central America. He was writing a few articles and training anti-sandinista troops in Honduras and Costa Rica.

“Writing of the article was secondary to the training of these anti gorilla troops.”- Dale Dye

Due to Iran-Contra, Dale made the decision to leave this assignment and move on in his life.
Once a Marine, Always a Marine
Dale reflected and concluded that a common theme that intrigued him was military movies and the fact that these movies did not reflect the military that he served in.  He went to LA and made a name for himself by convincing producers that the actors needed total immersion in a version of bootcamp that the actors could bring to their performance.  His mission was to change how the American civilians view the common grunt. Dale finally teamed up with Oliver Stone to train the actors for the movie Platoon. For 3 weeks with no outside contact, Dale Dye trained 33 actors as a rifle platoon.  Some of those actors went on to be famous. He trained Forest Whitaker, Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, and Tom.

Berenger“Always been a movie fan; seen every military movie there was .” – Dale Dye

  • Connections Through Letters During WWII with Lisa Shapiro
Lisa Shapiro is the author of No Forgotten Fronts: From Classrooms to Combat, published by the Naval Institute Press. Lisa read almost 5,000 letters written by servicemen and servicewomen from San Diego who wrote to one college professor during WWII.
Lisa Shapiro – Collection of WWII Letters to One Professor

Lisa started teaching in 2002 in San Diego at a community college and has always had veterans in her classroom.  She wanted to help and better understand veterans and their experiences.  In addition, she believes they bring a lot of value to the classroom. Lisa wanted to be on the forefront of helping veterans in making their transition from the military to the business world.

“Veterans make awesome students.” – Lisa Shapiro

After deciding to go back to school, Lisa researched war literature.  She came across a letter collection at San Diego State University and spent 2 years going through these letters that veterans had written to one professor, Dr. Post.  Doc, his nickname, believed in connecting veterans. He created a newsletter and more veterans started writing him. Doc wanted veterans to know that they were important and not forgotten.
    Mosaic of Letters
The letters that were written became much like a mosaic of stories that Lisa had to thread together.  The newsletter became important to all that wrote to Doc. The stories written from the letters started to intertwine veterans together due to their experiences and circumstances.
