  • Conquer Anything: A Green Beret’s Guide to Building Your A-Team Greg Stube
Retired SFC Greg Stube is a speaker on leadership and character. A serious injury sustained during a mission forced him into medical retirement. This didn’t stop him from serving, though, as he became the spokesperson of the Green Berets after recovery.

“The lessons we learn in the service of our country, we owe them back to the country. It reminds me of George Washington. At the end of his service, he took the uniform off and he was asked to be our first president and he reluctantly agreed. But he kept serving.” - Greg Stube
Greg Stube - Special Forces Command
Greg joined the Army Infantry in 1988. Then a boy with the grandeur of youth, he recalls being under the impression that they were going to turn him to Rambo. What he found was something entirely different with all the supervision that somehow felt suppressive to his freedom and potential.

He got the opportunity to join the Special Forces, and wounded up in a special training program. For the next 19 years, he spent his career as part of the Green Berets.

The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care.
    Transition by Injury
During Operation Medusa in Afghanistan in 2006, Greg sustained several fatal injuries. He spent a year and a half recovering from the life-altering experience, and credits his A-team and faith with his miraculous survival.

Refusing to become just another victim of warfare, he rose to the challenge of his commanding general after his hospitalization. He got into public affairs and became the spokesperson of the Green Berets for four years.
    Building Himself Back
The lack of a sense of purpose after early retirement has made it difficult for veterans to move forward. Greg knows this. He laments how young men and women can say right off the bat that they are retired, when it’s not a place they’re supposed to be.

“I think that’s a moment of time in your life where if you exit immediately without developing anything or salvaging anything that’s left of your military self, it’s almost like such a big reset button that you may not get back on your feet completely.” - Greg Stube

He has therefore made it his mission to continue serving the country in other ways. He owes the nation that much, after all the lessons he’s learned through his military career. Greg has since moved on from active military duty to authoring, public speaking, and charity, with focus on leadership and building one’s A-team.

  • MBA vs MS in Finance Alexander Lowry with Gordon College
    Alexander Lowry Gordon College

Alexander Lowry is a Professor of Finance at Gordon College, head of the Master of Science in Financial Analysis program. He's also into advising businesses that students can potentially work for. In this week’s episode, Alexander shares with us an affordable option to get a finance degree for veterans who wish to transition into the finance world.

“From my perspective, hands down, the best leadership guys are military... But on the flip side of that, you’re competing against people who have been doing a certain job for many years.” - Alexander Lowry

Alexander Lowry - From History to Wall Street

Alexander was a history major and always assumed he was bound to go to business and finance. Deviating from this path, he got into management consulting. This field, he thinks, is a great training ground, as it gives exposure to different industries and sectors.

The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care.

But even after over a decade in this profession, his “Wall Street itch” just had to be scratched. With a Wharton Masters in Business Administration experience, he was finally able to move across.

    MBA vs MS in Finance

For most people who’d like to be part of the business industry, it’s mostly a choice between MBA or finance. Picking one is easy. It’s a matter of whether you know where you want to go in the future.

Taking up MBA entails learning all the subjects from operations, accounting, and finance. There’s the eventual internship that matches you up with the right job that suits you. You also get to choose any field of specialization that you want.

But if you’re pretty set on finance, you wouldn’t want to take up two more years of learning basically everything. Taking up a one-year finance program like the one offered at Gordon will save you over a hundred grand. It will also allow you a few years of working experience.

    On Military Fitting in Finance

A lot of hiring managers seem to prefer experienced financiers over military veterans. It’s the easy way, but it’s not always the right way. Alexander maintains that veterans have a lot more to offer, owing to their training and inherent leadership skills.

“When hiring someone, I only need two things. I need to know they’re intelligent and passionate. Because if you have those, I can train you to do any job.” - Alexander Lowry

Good news is, many companies have been exerting effort to understand veterans and the actual value they can bring.

Air Force Veteran Mark Harper is the EVP of Operations and Strategy at We Are The Mighty, a military media brand. While in the military, he led worldwide combat documentation teams.

"Getting out there, meeting as many people as you can, and helping to connect other people ... help resonate and push you to other circles of people that you will never come across unless you try." - Mark Harper

The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care.

He earned his MBA from UCLA Anderson and held marketing and business development positions at Paramount Pictures, Technicolor, and was a co-founder of Audeze, a $20M headphone company.
    Mark Harper - Combat Camera
Mark spent the latter half of his career deploying videographers and photographers. They would document military exercises taking place in different parts of the world.

The team would station themselves in specific locations within the area and capture breathtaking moments in action. These would then be shared through the television and other media.
    Into Content Creation
Transition was daunting for Mark. His passion in creating content seemed to have no direct path. He was unsure where and how to take it in the civilian life.

"You have to do a lot of homework to figure out what it is that you want to do, so that when you get those opportunities to be able to ask someone for help, you have a very specific ask." - Mark Harper

It was not until he returned to the base. He received word of a voluntary separation program for communication officers. He signed up and pursued the life he once only dreamed of.

  • Miranda Hope Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program
Mandatory Fund Podcast host Blake and members of the Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program join us for this special episode. Sharing the story of the non-profit organization are Miranda Hope, granddaughter of late Bob Hope, retired US Navy Captain John Funk, and US army veteran turned assistant art professor Regan Vasconcellos.

“It provides one-on-one employment transition services to veterans leaving the military for civilian work.” - Miranda Hope on the Easter Seals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program
    Miranda Hope - A Hands-on Team
Miranda shares that the service’s being one-on-one is so critical to the organization’s mission and success. They don’t cut corners and generalize veterans when coming up with the best employment plan for them. The team, spearheaded by John Funk, listen closely and work in order to figure out what is meaningful for each one of their clients.
John Funk - A Military Story
Director of operations John Funk relays twenty-eight years’ worth of narrative as part of the Navy. Graduating from the Naval Academy in 1984, he went off to flight school to become a helicopter pilot. He commanded the Sea Hawk to fend off Soviet submarines during the Cold War and the HSL-44 Swamp Fox Squadron in Florida.

He was able to work with thousands of folks in serving the country, then moved on to take government positions typically chosen by senior marine officers.

“While it was a really great opportunity for me, it wasn’t really the right fit. I wasn’t finding myself fulfilled in the sense of purpose that I had had when I was on active duty.” - John Funk

This is when John decided to admit to himself that he needed to look for something else.
    What Sealed the Deal
John remembers not having an awful time when he transitioned, all thanks to the privilege of having a wide network of support available for him as a senior officer. He was able to work with individuals he interacted with and met throughout his career.

According to him, this is precisely the reason why he joined the non-profit sector.

“I wanted to make sure that sailors of all ranks, marines of all ranks and positions had the same privileges and connections and network that I had when I made my transition.” - John Funk on joining Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program

  • Jean Marie Dillon Freedom Financial Counseling
The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care.

Jean Marie Dillon is a Certified Financial Planner and Accredited Financial Counselor. She provides nationwide, sales-free financial counseling and planning services. Today, she is an expert in coaching service members and veterans to financially transition back into society.

“Military, especially military veterans, lack the financial literacy that they need to transition back into civilian life. And that’s why i feel like my services and what my colleagues bring to the table bolster that knowledge.” - Jean Marie Dillon
Jean Marie Dillon - The Reason Behind
Jean Marie recalls gravitating the same sphere with over 60 other financial planners all chasing the same dollar, the same high-network individual. It took realizing the existence of a “subset” of the economy that make practical financial guidance for small-time individuals or groups for her to hop on a different train.

“There’s a huge segment of the population who has a need and they’re not being fulfilled by traditional financial advisers.” - Jean Marie Dillon

This was precisely when she turned around and made financial counseling her career, instead of going the path of a typical financial adviser for big names.
Serving for the Military: Then and Now
Jean Marie started out in her profession primarily to provide value-added service as a military financial counselor. When it occurred to her that she needed a steady, full-time job, she went to private practice.

Even then, she didn’t deviate much from what she previously did, essentially doing what she’s done before for military members and their spouses. Adapting her experiences to her focus population, she’s transitioned into helping veterans and civilians at present time.
    The Army: An Incredible Lot
Jean Marie’s experience working for the army was a constant state of awe. Endowed with entrepreneurial spirit, the army is a group of ingenious individuals.

“I’m in constant awe of what they know and what they can do with what little they have.” - Jean Marie Dillon

This first-hand knowledge only managed to fan her desire to serve the population. She carries this sentiment, even in private practice.

  • Navy JAG and Author Dave Grogan Sapphire Pavilion Ep. 218
    Sapphire Pavilion by Dave Grogan

Previously a Navy Judge Advocate, Dave Grogan has had his fair share of court-martial cases for which he prosecuted and defended. He’d gone to many places and shook hands with people from all walks of life. Now, he weaves history, international intrigue, and military experiences into the Steve Stillwell legal thriller series published by Camel Press.

The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care.

“I got to do stuff that other attorneys can only dream about doing.” - Dave Grogan

Dave Grogan - The Beginnings of a JAG Journey

He was a CPA and on his second year in law school, bound for the corporate track, when Dave ran into a Navy student in a party. He remembers being regaled by stories of deployment in the Mediterranean as part of USS America, something that Dave has always wanted to do.

“I never thought you could be a lawyer and a naval officer at the same time.” - Dave Grogan

He changed courses and switched his background to apply to the Navy. His initial goal was to serve for three years, get back out, and go to corporate law. At the back of his head, he knew he’d continue his service as long as he enjoyed it, and enjoy it he did.

Dave got assigned to the naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, prosecuting and defending court-martials. He went back to the US and interviewed for companies. But he never cashed in on his initial plans.

Gusto. It's time to tame the chaos of payroll, benefits, and HR.

    Committing to the Navy

During those days when he went back to the US, Dave remembers talking to his wife while he looked over Tokyo Bay. It was at that moment of being away from home and being treated with a cosmic view of where he stood in life that Dave decided to shelve the original game plan.

“I thought, ‘Why in the world would I get out and go back and sit in an office back in the States?’” - Dave Grogan

With his decision to stay in the army, he got deployed to Cuba and the Persian Gulf. He got sent back to the US to get a Master’s degree on international law, which opened a myriad of opportunities for his career. His exposure as the adviser of commanders, both on national and international level, contributed to a lot of the ideas that inspired his writing Sapphire Pavilion.

    JAG Turned Writer

While he was on his last tour as part of the Pentagon, the idea for his second book occurred to Dave. Every Friday night when he would drive back home from work, he listened to a podcast on veterans.

“I remember listening to some stories, in particular about the Vietnam war and some Vietnam veterans... and I came up with the idea of writing a story that would attempt to honor Vietnam veterans and also wounded warriors.” - Dave Grogan

  • Alex Bertelli Army Veteran and Havenlock Inventor Ep 217
    Haven Lock with Alex Bertelli

Army Veteran Alex Bertelli invented the Haven Lock following his experience in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. He got the idea from how Iraqi insurgents would barricade their doors against US forces.

“We kinda grew our business from essentially zero to where we have it now just by never quitting, always completing the things we said we’re gonna do with our investor’s money, and making smart decisions on who we decide to partner with.” - Alex Bertelli

Alex Bertelli - From Flyer to Entrepreneur

Alex’s military career began after receiving his certificate for the ROTC program of University of Dayton in 2005.  He got accepted in the aviation branch of the army. From there, he traveled to Fort Rucker, Alabama where he learned how to become a helicopter pilot.

Cohen Veteran Network is a not-for-profit philanthropic organization with a mission to improve the quality of life for post-9/11 veterans and their families

He was passionate about flying and enlisted in the 160th during his first week in flight school. The rest, simply put, is history.

Down his career path he came to a crossroads where had to choose to move away to Fort Campbell. His family came up with a suggestion of moving on from the military career.

Alex made the decision to transition into civilian life with a job and while pursuing an MBA.
    The Entrepreneurial Story
Alex has always wanted to start his own business, not wanting to rely on wages from working for another company for the rest of his life.

“I always thought that the key to success was developing an idea around a team that could take something to market and be successful.” - Alex Bertelli

When a business idea occurred to him, he built a team around it and took it to Kickstarter. With the platform and a lot of hard work and confidence in his idea, he was able to successfully launch his smart lock business.
    Haven Lock’s Success
By investing in his idea, the prize he and his team got off their toiling was incredible. They landed on news websites and got published, reaching as far as Japan.

His business continues to grow and is now on its way to mass production of one of the world’s strongest smart locks.

Audition for a Musical Theatre Group
Her journey in the entertainment industry started from an audition for a musical theatre group. The group was located at Little Creek Base in Norfolk.

She got the core part in her first audition. In her second audition, she got the part of Glinda in the Wizard of Oz. She advanced her career with acting classes.
    A Can-Do Attitude Wins
There was no stopping Jennifer from achieving what she wanted to do. She was on vocational rehab around the time she was still starting in her newfound career.

But there was no funding available for any acting programs. Nevertheless, she made her way through the industry. As she said, you can do whatever you put your mind to.

Now, she has amassed over 50 credits in television and film. They include Stranger Things, Colony, Timeless, General Hospital and Days of Our Lives. She also participates in Veteran causes, including Pin-Ups for Vets, Veterans in Media and Entertainment, Run Ranger Run, and Walk for Warriors.
