Marine Corps Veteran Aaron Serrano – Military Cost Cutters

Discounts for the military community? Marine Corps Veteran Aaron Serrano is the Founder and CEO of Military Cost Cutters, a company which helps the military community search for military-friendly businesses.

"Military Cost Cutters provides an easy way for [businesses] to be in front of the military audience and be known as military-friendly." - Aaron Serrano

Aaron Serrano - Military Career and Transition

While in the military, Aaron served in different roles both in the East and West Coast. He also took part in deployments and convoys.

After years of services, he went on to achieve his Masters of Business Administration degree. He also worked at John Deere for a year. His career transition went smoothly as he received the privilege of choosing from three job offers.

    Discounts for the Military Community

The inspiration to start Military Cost Cutters (MCC) traces back to his preparation for a deployment to Africa. During which, he found a museum that offered $20 off for a military discount.

"We don't expect the discount but we truly appreciate it." - Aaron Serrano

He saw the need for a centralized database. Aaron already had his website. But with a business partner, he kept going with MCC.

    How Military Cost Cutters Works

MCC offers four listing packages to businesses. Their online and offline marketing program includes window stickers by way of advertising their business as military-friendly.

The stickers take away the awkwardness and encourages the community to refer the business to their circle. Military Cost Cutters is free of charge to the Veterans.

Robert Pizzini - iFly Skydiving Va Beach | Ep. 212
Robert Pizzini used his 26 years of experience in the Navy to start an indoor skydiving business. He is the Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of iFLY Va Beach Indoor Skydiving. He began to develop iFLY Va Beach Indoor Skydiving in 2010, bringing this technologically advanced experience to Virginia Beach in 2015.

"A high degree of physical fitness fuels a high degree of mental activity and capacity.”  - Robert Pizzini
    Transitioning into Retirement
During his tour in Iraq, Robert decided it was time to move on to other things in 2010. Ironically some of his friends he had served with for over 20 years were getting out at the same time. They began with the idea of starting a consulting company called R3. The firm was in the special operations trade space. Specifically the in the area of all things explosive and EOD.

They focused on the white collar aspect of man, train equip, fund, etc. That really appealed to Robert. It was what he had been doing the later part of his career. It was a collective group of guys that had been around a long time. They all thought this had been missing during their careers and felt there were some real high-end opportunities to be had.
Training Troops Provides Idea for iFly
Robert spent a lot of time jumping out of airplanes. On his last tour, he was a training officer at EOD training unit 2 at Fort Story. He was the combat support officer responsible for all the advanced diver training and advanced airborne training for forces getting ready to deploy. In his airborne role, he would secure vertical wind tunnels for the troops to train in. Attending training and seeing the full business model play out, it was clear to him that Va Beach was a good location for this.

Download and listen to Robert Pizzini iFly Va Beach to learn his story and how he made the successful transition from active duty to entrepreneur. You’ll hear how his success has allowed him to give back to the community through a new youth program Robert and iFly Va Beach have just rolled out.

  • Building a High Caliber Community for Veterans with Army Veteran Alyssa Quinn
211 Alyssa Quinn - High Caliber Community
Alyssa Quinn is the founder and CEO of High Caliber Community, the app for Veteran connections. All founders of High Caliber Community (HC2) are veterans, or currently serving. The mission at HC2 is to empower and unite the veteran community by strengthening bonds in neighborhoods across the country. HC2 created a secure app for veterans and current service members of all branches to connect directly with one another, find events in their area, find resources and other veteran owned businesses. The HC2 team began working on High Caliber Community in early 2017, and have just recently launched the High Caliber app, available for Veterans and current service members to download from the app store.

"[The app helps you] Find other veterans near you that are interested in the same things.”  - Alyssa Quinn
Starting in the Army National Guard
Alyssa enlisted with the Iowa Army National Guard in 2009 as a medic. Soon after she was preparing to deploy with her unit. While at MOB site, she injured her back pretty badly and she was sent back home.

She was a bit lost when she returned home trying to figure out what she wanted to do. One thing she knew for sure, she wanted to get back into uniform. She began by looking for active guard positions throughout the nation and stumbled across a Weapons of Mass Destruction team in Northern California in 2013.
Alyssa Quinn - Long Distance Drill Weekends
After 4 years, Alyssa voluntarily resigned to with the intent of continuing her education. But it got a bit messy at first.

Initially, her plan was to move to North Carolina and she did an inter-state transfer. On her terminal leave she drove home from California to Iowa. While she was at home she realized she needed to take a couple of college classes and enrolled in a community college for the semester. All the while she was commuting to North Carolina to report for drill weekends!
    Guard to Entrepreneur
At some point during this time, she had the idea for her app and while in school really started to pursue it. She had found something she was truly passionate about and wanted to pursue. Everything else seemed to go by the wayside.

While in her transition period she was was finding ways to occupy her time. She began by creating dating profiles on some dating apps. She was looking for some friends to match up with. Any time she would match with civilians they would ask her questions she was not comfortable with.

Anytime she found a vet near her, she felt like she had struck gold. She knew she could connect with them on a social basis to grab a beer, or work out, or play pool because they got it. They were coming from the same background.

  • War Horses for Veterans Founder Army Veteran Patrick Benson
210 War Horses for Veterans with Patrick Benson
After years of combat, veterans can be left with specific issues which -- if untreated -- could keep them from pursuing their goals and enjoying the life they have. But, did you know that horses can help through the healing process? In this episode, hear about War Horses for Veterans with Patrick Benson.

"The great thing about our program is ... we have connections with CEOs and owners who could provide us with resources that we could provide to [veterans]." - Patrick Benson

Patrick is the Director and Co-Founder of the nonprofit War Horses for Veterans. He served in Iraq and in the Kosovo campaigns as an Army Infantryman.
    Certified Horse Trainer
Patrick always had the entrepreneurial bug. After his career in the Army, he took the first step and studied horsemanship and horse training with a renowned clinician and trainer. Soon, he completed the program and became a certified horse trainer.
    Healing from Horses
But eight years later, Patrick started having anxiety attacks and other issues left by his combat experiences. Little did he know how therapeutic his newfound career was.

His comrades helped him overcome the challenges he faced. That became a big stepping stone for him.
    Nonprofit for Combat Veterans
Patrick sincerely appreciates all the support he received during those tough times. During a big competition in Kentucky, he had the opportunity to connect with highly successful individuals.

Later on, it inspired him to launch War Horses for Veterans. It is a nonprofit organization that helps combat veterans heal from the challenges of coming home.

Thursday, mid-August 2010 0430: Matthew's praise before our route clearance mission and back to our forward operating base. We have been away from home for seven days. In a week we got three IED’s, an ambush and three days in Sharan’s transient tents for vehicle repairs. Today we head north, back to the PF Province. My son Josh’s platoon, they are south as we meticulously are moving north. I am a platoon sergeant, while Josh, my son, is a driver today. Our 0500 morning patrol ensures we miss civilian city traffic. It has been a long uneventful day as we close on Josh’s platoon at 1630. Vic’s bounce and rock through old IED holes. The sunset begins to our west and mountains are visible 50 clicks to our east. Wind carries dust clouds we stir up westward, interrupting the sunbeams’ journey to our path home. I see Josh’s platoon icon on my computer screen but we cannot yet reach them on radio frequencies. Another quiet afternoon clearing roads and easing through crater after crater, some we remember and some we do not. Back home, Karen, my wife is getting ready. Charlotte’s out of bed now and maybe I can call them tomorrow. “There it go!” my gunner yells. His matter of fact clarification is simply, ‘blast, North’. A surreal second later, Rollins, my main Vic operator says, “one nine smoke cloud North.” I radio, “Husky one this is one nine, roger, we see it.” Our Husky operators search mark until we can tell the Buffalo operator where to terrigrate for possible IED’s. “One nine, this is one two alpha, want us to lead us out and get us up there, over?” Negative one two alpha, break husky one husky two, get us up there clear as you go, don’t get us blown the hell up, over.” “Husky one, roger.” “Husky two, roger.” We still have no radio coms with our brothers. I get a text report of small arms fire, RPG’s and indirect fire. U-shaped ambushes from behind are common. We had one here last week moving out. We charlie miked North as our sister platoon responds to today’s aggression. “Who got hit,” I wonder. A poke of a 137 vehicle icon on my screen will display the corresponding Vic’s status. Smith’s icon, their platoon sergeant, a popup opens and his speed reads 5 km/hour. I close his popup and open the next in line. It reads 7 km/hour. That’s Donner, he’s moving. Wait, rear ambush, check the trail vic dumbass. A spark in my peripheral vision, I glance at Miller, he looks at me, he lights a smoke. Neither he nor I speak, I go back to my screen. Miller says, “Your son out today?” “Roger, he’s driving TOP.” “TOP’s out! What the hell!” “He’s filling in for LT Martin, who is on leave.” I click another icon, Smith’s rear Vic, Duke is rolling. Shit! Who the hell go hit? Smoke ejects with Miller’s every word, passes his steering wheel to cover our windshield in a gloomy fog. “We need to get up there Sarge.” I poke another icon. One more data popup opens, this icon’s velocity caption reads 0.00 km/hour. “First one at a halt,” I think. It’s got to be the one that got hit. Sergeant Sanderford we’ve got to roll Miller says.

“Your mistakes become your masters degree.” - Jonathan Gilliam on becoming an entrepreneur
3 Years to Becoming a SEAL
Jonathan’s career in the Navy lasted 5 years. For him, the journey began 3 years earlier when he made up his mind to be a SEAL. His last year of college he trained intensely to prepare himself.

Unfortunately, Jonathan was turned down for SEAL, Navy pilot and Marine Corps pilot. He simply did not know how to prepare his applications. So Jonathan trained harder and researched exactly what the SEAL’s looked for in a recruit.
    Dedication to His Goal
He decided to try again and by this time, all of the pilot slots were closed and he was turned down by the SEAL’s again. Jonathan was not going to give up. He contacted the detailer in Washington DC who looked at his file and told him that all the slots for SEALs were closed and to come back in a year.

Jonathan was at the Pentagon a year later to the day with his file in hand. Finally he had made it. When he asked the detailer when he would get his official notice the detailed bellowed, “I am your official notice!”

  • Creating Team Rubicon with Marine Veteran William McNulty
205: Creating Team Rubicon with Marine Veteran William McNulty
Disaster response teams in the spotlight today as Joe Crane talks about creating team Rubicon with Marine Veteran William McNulty. Learn how they started, what it takes to be a part of them, and how you can get involved.

"This organization is disrupting not only the disaster response base but also what it means to be a military veteran." - William McNulty
    Service in the Defense System
William enlisted in the Marine Corps soon after graduating from the university in 2000. He served as a TOW gunner for three years in the West Coast.

He went on to become part of the intelligence community. It opened the doors for him to work for various agencies which included the Defense Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council’s Iraq Threat Finance Cell.
    Life in Transition
He could hardly tell the difference between his Marine Corps and civilian job. He's worked in a similar sphere.

After his second return from Iraq, however, he faced the same struggles of other military veterans. He came to ask himself about the thing he wanted to do the rest of his life.
    Team Rubicon Disaster Response
During that time, William decided to travel around Central and South America. It led him to start a company with his friend.

But the 2010 Haiti earthquake changed their direction forever. They became the first responders and helped secure doctors and emergency personnel who went to the affected areas. That started team Rubicon.
