"Make sure to reach out and don't isolate. You're not doing yourself, your nation, or your family any service by choosing the path to destruction." - John Krenson
    In Army Guard Service
John served for 32 years in the Army Guard. After the 9/11, he was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He's also participated in disaster recovery operations.

The first half of his career focused on being a traditional guardsman, being a part of the strategic reserve, and the Cold War. In 2012, he graduated from the Army War College.
    Transition and Disconnectedness
During his first deployment, John co-owned a chemical company. Later on, he sold his shares to his long time friend.

He became an independent contractor afterwards. He learned a lot of skills from his experiences overseas.

But, he came to a point when he had to start from scratch. It took him awhile to re-establish himself.
    About Operation Stand Down TN

"Take initiative. Nothing's going to happen if we sit around." - Lance Frank on the most important lesson he learned from the military
    Service in the Air Force

  • Combat Wounds to Wounded Wear and Combat Coalition Navy Seal Jason Redman
190: Combat Wounds to Wounded Wear and Combat Coalition Navy Seal Jason Redman
Navy SEAL veteran Jason Redman overcame tragedy and successfully transitioned into entrepreneurship. Now, through his endeavors, he is able to inspire warriors and fellow veterans to not feel sorry for their combat injuries. Tune in!

"There is only one path: forward. There is only one motto: I overcome. Lead yourself to success." - Jason Redman
    Entrance to the Navy
Jason joined the Navy in high school. At the beginning of his career, he did counter drug operations in Central and South America.

He eventually became the instructor in his SEAL team and went into a commissioning program. By 2001, he attended school.

The 9/11 attack did not deter him from his studies. He returned to the Navy after graduation. Little did he know that he would be leading men with combat experience.
The Impact of a Combat Injury
Jason went into a combat operation in Iraq. While there, a big gun fight almost took off his arm. Still, he wanted to finish his career in the military.

For 21 years until he retired, he did special projects in the operations unit. He was under light duty status. And from time to time, he would undergo surgery to recover from his injury.
    Spreading Awareness and Inspiration
While he was still recovering, Jason was surprised the lack of awareness across the U.S. He also saw the need for modified clothing among wounded warriors. Jason himself found it difficult to wear regular apparel.

That inspired him to start Wounded Warriors. He said, "We started producing clothing to raise awareness of the sacrifice of our wounded warriors."

The company grew, and now he is working with a university on a leadership program called The Overcome Academy. They help wounded warriors learn how to lead themselves and to purposefully share their story to others.

To hear Jason’s story and learn how you can contribute to the cause, download and listen to Combat Wounds to Wounded Wear and Combat Coalition Navy Seal Jason Redman.

How do you turn your passion into profit? Today, Joe Crane welcomes Marine veteran Sarah of Ranch Road Boots. Learn about her entrepreneurial story on this episode From Combat Boots to Ranch Road Boots with Sarah Ford. Tune in!

"You have a whole lot set up in the backend in order for you to do that, too. Don't get too wrapped up in a business plan. Just go sell your product and you're off to the races." - Sarah Ford

From the Marine Corps to Entrepreneurship
Sarah joined the military in 2001 and did logistics in the marines. During her career in the corps, she was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She also had the experience of being the Project Manager for a homebuilder. From the military, she transitioned into the civilian world and took a step forward into entrepreneurship. She studied at Harvard Business School.
    Inspiration of Ranch Road Boots
When Sarah got into Harvard, she went to work at a consulting group. But she was more drawn towards entrepreneurship, so she left her job and went to work for a business owned by her friend's dad.

During which, another friend invited her to work as the Vice President of Sales for his car company.

They ended up doing crowdsourcing automotive design. That was just around the time that Nike was offering custom shoes. She bought custom boots from them and got inspired to do the same for cowboy boots.
Success from the Business Battle Group
Sarah started Ranch Road Boots in 2012. By 2014, they opened a ready-to-wear line to scale the business better.

That year, she did a Kickstarter and competed in a Veteran Business Battle Group. Thankfully she won as the crowd favorite and was able to buy more pairs for her business. Now, they are thriving on e-commerce.

"Through campaign coaching, our goal is to help make sure that we are going to have more men and women ... who would know that they would have somebody to walk with them and fight alongside them to get them ready to file and become a candidate on the ballot." - Raz Shafer

    Helping Political Candidates
Raz's passion for politics started when he was a kid. One time, his parents had a friend who ran for State Representative. But despite all the effort they exerted, their candidate still lost by 12 votes on recount.

Raz has worked with a number of military veterans. He wanted to work with people with leadership skills. People who have seen both its good and bad examples.

  • Changing the Way Business Hires Veterans OweYaa Luke Jenkins
186: Revolutionizing How Vets Transition Into the Civilian Job Market with Luke Jenkins
On today's episode, Joe Crane talks about Revolutionizing How Vets Transition Into the Civilian Job Market with Luke Jenkins. Luke graduated from West Point Academy and co-founded the social enterprise called OweYaa. They help veterans undergo training and match them with companies through online internship. Tune in!

"We simplify the process for the company and that really brings them another aspect ...They get the personalized match and we're handling everything for them." - Luke Jenkins

    Solution to Veteran Unemployment
Luke graduated from WestPoint in 2016. But while he was there, he was awarded a research project. Their aim was to find a solution to veteran unemployment, which was 17% higher that time.

They found three causes for the unemployment: 1) mismatched skillsets, 2) the veteran's lack of civilian work experience, and 3) cultural misconceptions and barriers.

Their research led them to start the project-based internship called OweYaa.

    Introducing Online Internship for Veterans
OweYaa helps transitioning veterans get internships. They help them with training, coding camps, marketing courses, and others in any line of interest.

The internship is online so that veterans can enjoy working anywhere in the world.

    Veteran Challenges to Overcome
Despite the hiring initiatives, Luke acknowledges that there is still a huge gap to be filled. One challenge is the bad experiences that smaller companies had from veterans.

There is also the issue of underemployment. A number of veterans end up in a less fulfilling job.
