  • 1 Vet at a Time with Marine Veteran Lynn Lowder
182: Lynn Lowder 1 Vet at a Time
On today's episode, Joe Crane welcomes Lynn Lowder 1 Vet at a Time. Lynn has diverse leadership and management experience in business, law and the military. He is a nationally recognized veterans-rights advocate on: VA health care benefits, PTSD/TBI and entrepreneurship initiatives.

A decorated combat veteran, he served as a team leader with 1st Force Reconnaissance Company (Special Operations) in South Vietnam where he was awarded the Silver Star Medal for valor, the Bronze Star Medal with combat “v” and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.

"Veterans have a lot more going for them than they think they do in terms of getting into business." - Lynn Lowder
From the Marines to the Legal Profession
Lynn was a football player in college during the Vietnam war. He always wanted to be in the Marine Corps, and so enlisted after the junior season.

Within the military, he commanded a Marine rifle platoon, two Marine rifle companies, an overseas Marine security guard company and a Marine special operations team in Vietnam.

He spent a total of 16 years in the Corps. Towards the end of his career in the military, he got a degree in law and transitioned into the civilian life as a trial lawyer.
Helping 1 Vet at a Time
Lynn served as a trial lawyer for 20 years. He eventually worked as general counsel for a large franchise. He also worked as a chief operating officer for other companies.

"A number of our veterans would be far better off to be captain of their own row boat than being buried somewhere down in the engine room of a large ship." - Lynn Lowder

In 2012, he helped start a veteran program at a regional university. His experience exposed him to many 9/11 veterans. In just less than a year, the program grew to 1400 vets.
Choices for Veterans Under the Law
Lynn learned that the basic thrust of legislation was full employment. The Servicemen's Readjustment Act (1944) provides a couple of choices for veterans.

Under the Act, veterans may get a degree and have a job. They may also choose to get a trade instead. They may also purchase a business property with The Fed as their loan guarantor.

  • 30 Days of Hell in Vietnam with Marine Veteran Jim Strauss
181: James Strauss 30 Days Has September
Joe Crane welcomes James Strauss on today's episode. James fought during the Vietnam War in 1968. His unique experiences inspired him to provide a detailed account of what happened. Listen to the story of James Strauss 30 Days Has September.
    Thirty Days Has September
James served as an officer in the Marines Corps during the Vietnam War. His experiences were quite unique to him, and so inspired him to write a series of books.

Thirty Days Has September is one such detailed account of what happened to him while in Vietnam. He kept the manuscript for more than 30 years for specific reasons. Now, he is out to share it to everyone.
    The Making of the Book
James completed the manuscript in 1970 and simply rewrote it for release. Letters of the past, some memorabilia, and former colleagues helped him assemble the story.

"It's there in the 1970 manuscript but it's also active in my mind because those kinds of experiences burn in intensely and don't come out." - James Strauss

Three men from his unit communicated with him, and were surprised that he still has the story intact. He's had his own share of challenges but he succeeded in the end.
    An Immediate Promotion
James became a commanding general the first day he arrived in Vietnam. They just got out of their training that time, and were taken to the commanding general's office.

"I said, 'I just got out of training and I don't really understand this. But what we learned is to take care of our men first.’" - James Strauss

He questioned why the officers were living in an air-conditioned comfort while the soldiers toiled in mud. Soon after, he just found himself as a company commander. All the other officers were already dead.

  • Sheath Underwear Creator Army Veteran Robert Patton
179: Sheath Underwear Founder and Army Veteran Robert Patton

SUBTITLE: Anatomical Isolation Pouch for Male Extremities

On today’s episode, Joe Crane talks to Army veteran Robert Patton about his inspiration on the battlefield to create a new kind of underwear in Sheath Underwear Founder and Army Veteran Robert Patton.

Robert Patton is loved and honored by all who know him. He is the nicest guy and takes care of people. It is because of this that he has so many team members willing to sacrifice their own ambitions to follow him on his journey to take an Idea he had on the battlefield to a reality where he sits as the Chairmen and of the Board and CEO of SHEATH Underwear.

He wants to share his story and challenges so that others will know that they too can make something of themselves if they are so inclined or become a member of a team that has shared vision of success for all involved and thrive in that regard.
Robert Patton Thrived in the Army
In 2006, Robert was attending college and working as a payroll specialist. His debt was piling up and he needed to make a decision to continue with his education or try something different. The Army was offering bonuses and Robert decided the universe was trying to tell him something.

Robert joined the Army in 2006 during the War in Iraq. He immediately excelled in basic training and his AIT training. Within a year, he joined his unit as a 92 Mike, as a mortuary affairs specialist in Iraq.

The job was an honorable one. Robert’s job was to ensure the soldiers were treated with honor, dignity and respect as they were returned home to their loved ones. It wasn’t a glamorous job but it was a necessary job Robert was proud to do.
    Educating Himself
While serving, Robert focused on his education and accumulating Army credits to get rank. He was on the fast track. He made corporal within a year and a half and sergeant within two. Upon his second tour he was the NCOIC of his squad. It was a successful tour with all men returning.

“If you wait until your product is perfect to take it to market, you’ve waited too long” Robert Patton on making the leap from enlisted to entrepreneur
    Transitioning to Civilian Life
It was a tough final two years serving in the Army. Robert got divorced, lost his house and was estranged from his daughter. Robert needed a positive focus.

On the battlefield in the Iraq summer of 2008, Robert came up with and idea for underwear. Not your average underwear, but one with a unique design. It had an isolation pouch internally to separate your package from your thighs which can become uncomfortable.

He had his “a-ha” in 2008 and in 2010 he began work on his version 0.0 product but it was going to be a long road. Robert was not discharged until 2012 and the first Kickstarter campaign was in 2013.

Since that time, there have been manufacturing errors of an entire production order that had to be overcome. His late wife passed and Robert Patton is now a single father of a 16 year old daughter.

To find out how he overcame obstacles to create a respectable company on track to triple last year’s earnings without outside investors, download and listen to Sheath Underwear Founder and Army Veteran Robert. Whether you are just starting a business or already have some years of experience, The NVBDC offers solutions that you can benefit from. Tune in!

"Veterans have knowledge and skills that very few people are ever going to have." - Keith King
    From the Military to Entrepreneurship
Keith served as a gunner in the combat support unit in Vietnam. When he transitioned out, he learned how detrimental that experience was for his career. So, he preferred to be silent about it as much as possible.

By the early 70s, he landed a job in the broadcast industry. He received a number of promotions, and got to work in the largest radio station in the country. As the years rolled on, he was able to establish his own business.
    Starting the NVBDC
Keith also had the experience of working in sales. It taught him some of the skills he needed as an entrepreneur. His first company focused on doing consulting in broadcasting.

Keith also launched a few other businesses in the long run. Now, with the desire to help other veterans, he actively serves in the National Veteran Business Development Council.
    A Champion in Business
Keith started The NVBDC for the purpose of providing a credible and reliable certifying authority. They serve to ensure valid documentation of a business' Veteran ownership and control.

Through the Supplier Diversity programs, many business opportunities exist for the Veteran Owned Businesses. In March 2012, Keith became the first veteran to be awarded as the State of Michigan, Mid-West Regional and National Veteran Small Business Champion.
