  • Treating PTSD with the Stellate Ganglion Block Dr Eugene Lipov
162: Healing Hero with Dr Eugene Lipov
On today’s episode, Joe Crane discusses Healing Hero with Dr Eugene Lipov. Eugene is the founder of Healing Hero and The Global Post-Traumatic Stress Injury Foundation. His mission is to help military personnel suffering from PTSD transition to a productive, healthy life. Tune in for some classic insights about the treatment he offers!
    Interest in Veteran Affairs
Eugene migrated with his family from Ukraine to the US while he was still 14 years old. He studied and trained to be a surgeon in Chicago. He was always interested in veteran affairs, and worked in a VA hospital.

His father was a World War II veteran, who suffered from a sever case of PTSD. Eventually, he came up with a treatment using the anesthetic technique.
    Stellate Ganglion Block
Stellate ganglion block has been around since 1925. It’s an effective treatment for arm pain and headaches. Eugene trained on it in the late 1980s.

He has been using it since then until he discovered that it can also treat PTSD. A local anesthetic would be used to numb a fight-and-flight system in the neck. The treatment requires two and a half number of procedures on average.
The Case of a Special Operations Soldier
Eugene shares the story of a special operations soldier from Illinois. Fire brought him down twice in Iraq. He also had the experience of shooting a two-year old child laid with explosives to save his team.

He became violent when he returned home. It’s been eight years now that he’s in treatment. They found that he had a number of issues that affected him.

    Journey towards CPI
Jim is the youngest of four siblings, and grew up with a desire to follow his father’s footsteps. But at the age of 17, his father passed away. Fortunately, Jim was able to continue his studies.

“Getting the answers on the test was one thing, but figuring out how to go forward was the bigger reward.” -Jim Cowper

While in college, he worked as a day laborer. He eventually landed a job in a technical staffing firm, and transferred to CPI in 1983. Jim worked for another staffing company afterwards, until he retired and returned to CPI.
    On the Lookout for Veterans
Contact Professionals, Inc. was founded as a veteran-owned company. They have been recruiting, hiring, and supporting veterans for many years.

“For 35 years we’ve been this firm who went out, recruited, and hired veterans because we thought that was the right thing to do. Now in 2017, it’s hip to hire veterans.”

They staff veterans with technical skills from tank mechanic to aviation engineers. They have also branched out to other defense clients.

According to Jim, a lot of companies are now looking for veterans. Although he doesn’t have any military background, he has been with veterans for a long time. He finds them invigorating, and appreciates their dedication and bravery.
    No Easy Solution
Jim acknowledges the challenges that veterans and companies face. According to him, there is no database for soldiers coming out. This gives companies a hard time finding veterans.

  • Ukrainian Immigrant to Marine to Start-up Entrepreneur George Bukhin
159: Ukrainian Immigrant to Marine to Start-up Entrepreneur George Bukhin
On today’s episode, Joe Crane interviews Ukrainian Immigrant to Marine to Start-up Entrepreneur George Bukhin. George spent seven years as a grunt in the Marine Corps. He is now the COO of a tech startup in Silicon Beach, launched his own company, manages a few real estate properties, and is active in different communities in LA. Tune in for the strategies and tips that have guided him on the road to success!

“Fear has two meanings: forget everything and run, or face everything and rise. The choice is yours.” -George Bukhin
    Entrance to the Marine Corps
George’s family immigrated to the USA in 1991. He was raised to be extremely patriotic, and with a desire to live the American dream. His parents worked hard enough to succeed.

After high school, George joined the marines and served as a Grunt. He worked in the most gruelling conditions and complete tasks. According to him, there are three things he knew well: how to shoot, how to have a good time, and an unrivaled work ethic.
    From Marine to Entrepreneur
George had no clear path after he went out of the marines. He had years of experience and some skill sets that he can use in the civilian sector. But, he did not know what he wanted to do.

He decided to attend school, and become an LAPD officer. George was confident enough that he’d get hired. But, he screwed up and soon got disqualified.

    [adrotate banner="5"]

“We don’t ever wait for the enemy to come to us; we seek the enemy.” -George Bukhin

It was his lowest point in life. He lost some career opportunities that he thought were sure. That’s when he started seeking for new ones.

At 24 years old, his neighbor offered him a full time position to co-launch a company. George is very grateful for his neighbor-turned-mentor. Thanks to him, he moved up the road of success even without a college degree.
    Entitled to Succeed
Being in the military entitles you to a lot of things, including health care. Veterans, however, can be led to feel like the government owes them or that they should be recognized.

George discusses how this shouldn’t be the case. According to him, veterans are assets but they also need to work just as hard as they used to. They need to make things happen.

He and his partners take an innovative approach to Navy advancement exam prep. Using science and technology they are taking over the market in helping sailors advance in their careers.
    Jonny in the Navy
Jonny is currently active duty and has been in just under 10 years. He’s been around the block. He’s been to Japan, in bases in the US and has been stationed with the Marines.

More recently he was a career counselor for 3 years at a major MTF (Military Treatment Facility). This experience has given him some insight into the transitioning world of sailors.

“There is no better time to start your own business than when you are still active duty” - Joe Crane
    The Entrepreneurial Spirit
From a young age, Jonny has felt the entrepreneurial spirit. He has always felt you can turn anything into a product or try to sell something like your usual lemonade stand to make money.

Today, he is part of Blue Jacketeer, a product that is part of Patriot Labs, LLC. It’s a company that Jonny and a friend started about a year ago to manage Blue Jacketeer and also to allow for some growth horizontally as they decided what they wanted to work on next.
    Starting with an App
About 2 years ago, Jonny Coreson started a quiz app game on the iPhone where children can go on and practice their academic skills. Deployment hindered the success of this app but then he met his current business partner Alan.

Alan had the direction and Jonny was the business minded catalyst for Blue Jacketeer.
