January begins our fifth year of broadcasting Veterans Corner Radio and as you may know, we have expanded to four stations sharing our message. Almost two years ago we added another way to listen to our programs by starting a podcast. The podcast Veterans Corner Radio can be found on all podcast providers. Within the podcast, you will also find a library of over 95 programs for your review. We thank all the great guests who have taken time out of their busy day to share their knowledge with our veterans but most of all we thank our veterans and family who listen to the show. You are the reason for our being here. This show is a tribute to the members of our military and those who supported them. Enjoy!

In this episode of Veterans Corner Radio, host Bill Hodges will be giving you an update on Presumptive Diseases and explaining what they are and what the VA is offering to do. The VA is not a static entity and things are changing all the time is therefore in your best interest to constantly listen in as Bill shares the latest information on changes and claim to file. Now, what are the new presumptive diseases that have just been recognized by the VA, who is being encouraged to file, and even if you are not encouraged to do so it might be well to look into a claim.

Mr. Kimble shares with our audience the five general claims areas for disability benefits. I must admit that several of the suggestions he makes had not crossed my mind and had I knew them earlier I would have used the information in filing my claims.

Murphy, Executive Director of Compensation Services for the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC.
Executive Director Murphy, discusses the VA’s effort to speed up claims and to reach out proactively to our Desert Storm and Gulf War veterans to ensure they are informed on the new presumptive disease approvals as well as making sure that their families are likewise informed. She outlines the procedure for filing claims and emphasizes that if veterans are unsure as to whether or not to file, they should file. Phone numbers and website information to assist with those claims are discussed in the program.

Dr. Kim answers a wide range of questions on the why, when and how of getting flu shots. But she goes much deeper, dispelling some of the myths associated with the flu shots or actually any of the current shots that are there to keep us and our family protected. By the way, were you aware that the VA has established a network of 70,000 outlets for veterans to get shots locally instead of having to travel to a VA facility?

This is a program update; more will come shortly. The U.S. Army and now the Navy along with the Marine Corps have agreed to reconsider the cases of thousands of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars era with mental health conditions who received other-than-honorable discharges. This original broadcast outlines the help the DAV will be providing and now will be extending to those affected by this new discharge review decision.

The Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) is one of the oldest associations of Military Officers and one that is not as well known as some of the others. In talking with Commander Okin it became abundantly clear why that is, much of their efforts are directed to service to the youth of this country and low key from a publicity standpoint but very valuable to those they serve. Many times, it is the efforts of one or two Companions, as they refer to their members. Listen in to hear what Commander Okin has to say and you will be as impressed as I was with the man and organization.

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) National Commander, Andy Marshall is one of us in many ways. His two purple hearts and the disabilities resulting from them led him to a 40-year career with the DAV. He was, prior to his retirement the supervisor of a DAV regional claims office and he shares many of the insights he gained on the front lines, so to speak. I know you will learn much from him and be enriched by the valuable information he presents.

The Military Officers Association of America is deceptive in that the general public has little knowledge of them. However, they are one of the strongest if not the strongest lobbying organizations for both active duty military and veterans. With 21 lobbyists and a number of other legislative employees and the fact that they represent 350,000 members they are a great force for keeping the needs of our military in front of Congress. Listen in to hear what President Atkins , a man who rose from the enlisted ranks to have three stars on his shoulder has to say about their current efforts and how you can help.
