In this sidebar, I discuss the Take It Down Act that has been signed into federal law. I also discuss a new law specific to NC that goes into effect on July 1 and is aimed at educating employees of lodging facilities.

In this episode, we go through the indictment for Sean "Diddy" Combs and relate it to things we learned in our human trafficking series. We discuss the different dynamics involved in such an enterprise and Diddy's far-reaching power. We talk about Diddy trying to control victims/witnesses while in custody and their narratives. We look into this power and control mindset and how it is indicative of an abuser/trafficker.

This week, survivor of human trafficking, Calyn Weber, joins me to talk about her experiences and how she has grown since escaping her trafficker. Calyn discusses the trauma she experienced, the court case that ended in her trafficker receiving 6 life sentences, and overcoming addiction. In Calyn's words, her time being trafficked was the most purposeful pain she has ever experienced, and wants to help others in similar situations.

On this episode, Carly is joined by Detective Moody with WFPD, Lee Ann Stoker with First Fruit Ministries, and Assistant US Attorney Erin Blondel with the Eastern District of NC Office. We discuss the differences between exploitation and human trafficking and how they can relate to each other. We talk about what it's like to work with survivors, red flags to look for, and how these cases are prosecuted. This is the first episode in this mini-series.
