The raging waters of Rio Claro, in Colombia reminded recently of of the Amazon River. And currently, the river of life itself, which is as wild and unpredictable as the Amazon, has shown us, in the state of Texas which I call home, that the power of flowing water is as brutal as it is life-sustaining and necessary. Then, as promised, I take you back to Casablanca, in Morocco, and share the magnificence of the Hassan II Mosque. One of its most prevalent ornaments, Muqarnas, remind me of Victorias Amazonicas. Both images celebrate the symmetries and repetitive structures in nature, evoking the sacred mathematics so representative of Islamic art and architecture. Yet, even the majestic Hassan II Mosque has been affected by the passage of time and the elements.  Water, the memory of the dead fawn and the roar of nature's power aim to remind us all that everything in existence is a container and then a contributor to the all encompassing web of life.

Practiqué lo que prediqué y me fui a disfrutar del fin del mes de Mayo, explorando las maravillas de la primavera en el Norte de California. Hallé alimento para la mente, el cuerpo y el alma. Aprendí que la Bahía Este es un mundo perdido que está en constante movimiento, tectónica y morfológicamente. El Jardín de Rosas de Berkeley ofrece una visita exploratoria que deleita los sentidos con más de 250 variedades de rosas, y pude seguir las huellas del Hombre y la Mujer Verde en su diseño y sus tesoros botánicos. Luego, hallé los equivalentes humanos de la entrega a la vida y sus poderosas corrientes en el Parque Histórico Jack London, donde el legado de las vidas de Jack y Charmian London sugiere poderosas preguntas:

¿Qué significa ser valiente y atrevido hoy?

¿Cómo vives tu propia historia?

¿Qué te hace sentir como un capullo en pleno florecimiento?

I practiced what I preached and I went a-Maying, exploring the gifts of spring in Northern California. I found fuel for the mind, the body and soul. I learned that the East Bay is a lost world which is always on the move, tectonically and morphologically speaking. The Berkeley Rose Garden offers an exploratory visit that delights the senses with more than 250 varieties of roses, and I could follow the footsteps of the Green Man and Woman in its design and botanical treasures. I then found the human equivalents of this surrender to life and its powerful currents, at the Jack London State Historic Park, where the legacy and narratives of Jack and Charmian London's lives prompt the questions: What is it to be brave and daring today? How do you live your own story? What makes you feel like a flower in rapturous bloom?

Regreso después de un descanso de 3 semanas con la narrativa acerca de mi experiencia en el aeropuerto de Madrid durante el reciente apagón, un acontecimiento que me regaló la oportunidad de explorar las maravillas que abundan alrededor del área de la Plaza de España. Al caminar con los ojos bien abiertos, me encontré cara a cara, con El Hombre Verde y varias Mujeres Verdes, que adornan las magníficas fuentes construídas hace siglos. El permanece elocuente, así como las consortes suyas que hallé. Todos tenían mucho qué decir acerca de los desastres que se acumulan a nuestro alrededor, causados por nosotros mismos. Me recordaron la importancia de persistir en darle voz a sus mensajes y las historias fascinantes acerca de su evolución histórica, así como las apariencias periódicas que han realizado en diversas manifestaciones novedosas al cruzarse su camino con nuestra naturaleza humana, rica en narrativas, que persiste en evocar su presencia. Hoy en día, en esta encrucijada de emergencia climática, la figura del Hombre Verde abarca incluso los intentos por despertar nuestra conciencia Verde.

I return after a three week hiatus with my the narrative of my experience at the Madrid Airport of the recent electric grid failure, which allowed me the chance to explore the abundant wonders that abound around the Plaza de España area. As I walked with my eyes wide open, I met face to face, with Green Men and Women, adorning the magnificent plazas built centuries ago. He remains eloquent, as well as his consorts, Green Women I also found. They all had plenty to say about our mounting man-made disasters and failures. They reminded me to continue voicing his messages and the fascinating stories about their historical evolution and periodical appearances in ever-novel disguises as humanity's paths and our storytelling natures evoke his presence in transformative manifestations, which include contemporary efforts to awaken our Green conscience.

Celebramos los muchos rituales de que conmemoran el renacer y la Pascua, así como el Día de la Tierra, que celebramos el 22 de Abril, retomando nuestra jornada con el Hombre Verde.

Comienzo con la creación de una obra de arte que me ayudó a reconciliarme con la realidad del ciclo continuo de la muerte y el renacimiento. Seguimos los maravillosamente misteriosos orígenes de la figura arquetípica que representa los ciclos permanentes del mundo vegetal y el crecimiento, repasamos su espíritu inmortal y sus dones, así como el desafío que nos ofrece a cada uno de nosotros, y a la humanidad en pleno. Todos estamos invitados a honrarlo con una caminata en el bosque, creando nuestra propia versión de una cabeza rodeada de hojas y elementos de la naturaleza, o incluso un santuario o un jardín para refrescar nuestros días con color, inspiración y propósito. Sigamos las carcajadas que se escuchan entre las hojas y comencemos nuestra búsqueda para llegar a conocer al Hombre Verde profundamente.

We celebrate the many rituals of rebirth and Easter, as well as Earth Day, which will be celebrated on April 22nd, by resuming our journey with the Green Man.

Starting with the creation of a work of art that allowed me to reconcile the continuous cycle of death and rebirth. We follow the wondrously mysterious origins of the archetypal figure which embodys the unfolding cycle of greenness and growth, we review his undying spirit and gifts and the challenge he poses for each one of us and humanity as a collective. We are invited to honor him with a walk in the woods, creating our own version of his foliage surrounded head, or even a shrine or a garden to replenish our days with color, inspiration and purpose.

Let's follow the laughter in the leaves and start our quest to fully know the Green Man.

Partiendo desde las planicies del sur de Texas, y llegando al Amazonas y más allá, los Indígenas persisten en luchar por el derecho a sus tierras, en defender sus maneras de vivir autóctonas y en levantarse de los escombros para volver a ser montaña, tal como Mercedes Sosa cantaba en su canción inmortal, Indio. Exploro las historias del pasado, que se rehúsa a permanecer en el olvido, resumiendo el tomo voluminoso de Martinez de Vara, Bajo Tierra Sagrada, en el que los registros funerarios de la Misión San Antonio de Valero constituyen la atracción central. Dos reportajes de hoy en día acerca de las comunidades indígenas contemporáneas en el Brasil y en Paraguay nos sirven como recordatorios de que el Indio continúa negándose a rendirse y ser meramente escombros, él y ella añoran de nuevo, ser montaña, ser río, ser foresta, y nos recuerdan acerca de los Seres Humanos Verdes de los que cada uno de nosotros es un descendiente.

From the expanses of the south of Texas, to the Amazon and beyond, Indians continue to fight for the right to their lands, to defend their ways of life and to rise up from rubble and once again be mountain, as Mercedes Sosa sang in her song, Indio. I explore the stories of the past that refuse to be forgotten, by summarizing the hefty volume titled Beneath Sacred Ground, by Martinez de Vara, in which the funerary records of the Mission San Antonio de Valero are the main attraction. The news reports about contemporary Indigenous communities in Brazil and Paraguay serve as reminders that the Indian continues to refuse to be discounted as mere rubble, he and she long once again, to be mountain, to be river, to be forest, to remind us all about the Green Humans that we are each descended from.

Este episodio sigue al Hombre Verde para celebrar la Primavera en toda su gloria, inspirada por la llegada de nueva vida.  Invoco la alegría que dominaba en los antiguos rituales que honraban la fertilidad y el sembrado collectivo de las semillas, ceremonias que proclamaban la importancia de la cosecha que era abundancia digna de ser compartida con la comunidad. Te presento a San Ygnacio, un pueblo de frontera del Sur de Texas, históricamente relevante, que descubrí en un artículo acerca de la exhibición actual del arte de Michael Tracy, titulada "La Elegía de la Distancia". Desde el fragmento de J.B. Jackson "La Necesidad de las Ruinas" hasta la historia, centrada en un libro voluminoso titulado "Bajo la Tierra Sagrada", de Art Martínez de Vara, seguimos las voices del pasado, que se rehúsan a permanecer en silencio e insisten en recordarnos: La Vida es Sagrada.
