Day four in Parenting Fears Week of 60 Days of Halloween is Joshua, an underrated horror movie staring Sam Rockwell and Vera Farmiga as they cope with all the stress that accompanies a new baby - as well a child (Jacob Kogan) who answers the question of what Damien (The Omen) would be like without all that Antichrist stuff.

Day three in Parenting Fears Week of 60 Days of Halloween is Grace, a horror film that plays on the fears of a child dying, as well as the fears of not being able to provide for your child (in that order...). A quick glance at the "tomatometer" on Rotten Tomatoes shows a sizable discrepancy between critics (69% fresh) and audience (30% fresh) ratings. I can understand the audience rating, but I actually fall more onto the side of the critics - you just have to watch the movie with a certain perspective. So, join me and Eric as we give our thoughts on Grace and what you need to have in mind when watching it!

Day two in Parenting Fears Week of 60 Days of Halloween is Cargo, a Netflix original movie staring Martin Freeman. This Australian horror movie is technically a zombie movie, but (like any good horror movie) the fear comes not from the zombies, but from the decisions the characters have to make - and the consequences of those decisions.

It's September, which means my 60 Days of Halloween coverage has officially begun!! This year, I will be doing themed weeks with the theme of each week being a fear of either myself, my co-host Eric, or my special guest for the week. I'll be doing shorter, review episodes during the course of the week, culminating in an in-depth analysis episode at the end of the week to really dive into why each film was so terrifying. I'm kicking things off by focusing on my fear (as a new parent) of being a father. First up in my parenting fear week is: A Quiet Place. Even though Lucas and I very recently did an analysis episode of A Quiet Place, it is such a great film and it does a great job of capturing the fear of how one small mistake can have a lasting impact - I just couldn't leave it off my list!

This is just a quick update on the format of the episodes that I will be putting out. Along with the longer, more in-depth episodes that really focus on the analysis of a film, I'm going to start doing some shorter episodes. These shorter episodes will not go into as much depth, but they will allow for more consistent content. These shorter reviews will address five criteria for a film: outside information (such as hype, nostalgia, previous entries in the franchise, etc.), technical components (acting, directing, cinematography, etc.), emotional aspect (how I felt about the movie, how much I enjoyed it, etc.), rewatchability (how rewatchable is the movie, or in what context is it rewatchable, etc.), and who I recommend the movie for (I think cinema is for everyone, but not everyone has the same taste).

When one thinks of the phrase "a quiet place," they typically think of a calm, serene location where they go for respite, reflection, or something else synonymous and alliterative with "rest." However, thanks to John Krasinski, Bryan Woods, and Scott Beck, that phrase now elicits sheer terror! Like any good horror movie, the underlying fears of A Quiet Place are what make it so terrifying. There is great creature design, but the guilt, doubt, loss, love, mistakes, and sacrifices of the characters are what really gives tremendous depth to what the monsters represent. So, grab your felt game pieces, your bag of sand, and your toy space shuttle and join me and Lucas as we dive into why we love the horror of A Quiet Place!

One of the things that I love so much about horror movies (that are done well) is that they peel back that masks that humanity wears to conceal it's darker side: doubt, guilt, insecurity, hubris, fear - all of the things that are a natural part of humanity, but the roots of horror when taken to excess. One of the masters of exposing the darkness of humanity was Edgar Allen Poe, which is part of why his stories have endured and continue to be retold. In tonight's episode, I talk to Kevin and Jennifer Sluder of Sunshine Boy Productions about their short, Heartless - a take on Poe's "The Tell Tale Heart." Regardless of whether or not you have ever played a Mario game, the plucky little plumber is undeniably a cultural phenomenon, loved in all of his forms! Well...almost all of his forms. If you grew up loving the Super Mario games, you were probably sorely disappointed with the Super Mario Bros. movie due to its lack of similarity to the game you knew and loved. But, on the 25th anniversary of its release, Adam, Eric and I dissect this movie we love so much. As Eric so aptly paraphrases King Koopa - “You know what we love about this movie?
