The CEO of TikTok testified before the U.S. Congress today. The Guardian reports: 

Members of the committee have cited a Wall Street Journal report that indicates China would oppose a forced sale of TikTok. 

“China’s Commerce Ministry said Thursday that a sale or divestiture of TikTok would involve exporting technology and had to be approved by the Chinese government,” the article reads. 

Rep. Michael Burgess said despite Chew’s assertions, China seems to believe its in control of TikTok and its software. 
 
Chew said that while TikTok is not available in mainland China, the founders of ByteDance are Chinese and they work with Chinese employees just like many companies around the world. 

Burgess has asked whether anyone from ByteDance “directly provide input, help or instruction for your testimony today”. Chew said he prepared for this hearing with his team in DC. 

As a reminder, ByteDance is TikTok’s parent company.

Many GOP leaders are speaking out against the potential indictment of former President Donald Trump. NBC News has more: 

Republicans' defense of former President Donald Trump has taken a surprising twist: They're threatening to defund the prosecutor. 

For years, Trump and fellow GOP candidates have pilloried progressive Democrats for promoting a "defund the police" movement that seeks to shift funds away from traditional law enforcement and toward community services aimed at reducing crime. 

The progressives' slogan proved an effective enough weapon for Republicans against Democrats that Joe Biden felt compelled during his 2020 campaign to call for additional federal spending for police. 

But now, as Trump anticipates being indicted over allegations that he illegally paid hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels in furtherance of his successful 2016 bid for the presidency, House Republicans are threatening federal funding for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office. More broadly, the GOP is looking to weaken prosecutors whose campaigns were supported by the liberal billionaire George Soros.

Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he will reportedly be arrested Tuesday of this week. The Hill reports: 

Republican lawmakers blasted the prospect of former President Trump being indicted after he revealed he expects to be arrested next week, calling the potential move “politically motivated” and an “abuse of power.”  

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he would direct relevant committees to investigate if any federal funding is being used to “subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions.” 

“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump,” he tweeted, referring to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.  

Condemnations of the potential charges from McCarthy and other Republicans came after Trump posted on Truth Social early on Saturday that “illegal leaks” indicate he will be arrested on Tuesday.  

Bragg appears to be close to deciding on whether to file charges against Trump after having invited the former president to testify before the grand jury he has convened this past week. Trump’s attorney has said Trump would not accept the invitation.
