March 15, 2023Russian fighter jet collides with U.S. droneA Russian fighter jet collided with a U.S. drone over the Black Sea. NBC News has more: The Kremlin has warned the United States to cease “hostile” activity near its borders and said it would seek to retrieve the wreckage of the American drone that crashed into the Black Sea after a dramatic encounter with Russian fighter jets. Kyiv said Wednesday that the incident — the first known direct confrontation between the two superpowers since Russia invaded Ukraine last year — illustrated the Kremlin's desire to expand the conflict. The U.S. military said a Russian fighter jet harassed and then collided with the propeller of the MQ-9 Reaper on Tuesday, forcing the U.S. to bring the drone down in international waters. Washington said it was a “brazen violation of international law” and summoned Moscow's envoy to lodge a protest. But Russia denied its planes came “into contact” with the drone and said the U.S. was to blame, accusing it of a provocation by conducting surveillance near Russian airspace to help Ukraine. Energy costs continued to fall, with prices 5.2% higher in February year-over-year compared with an 8.7% increase in January. March 13, 2023Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank crash over the weekendThe Silicon Valley Bank collapsed and left many worried that this could affect other banks. NBC News reports: President Joe Biden said Monday that people should "rest assured" after his administration acted to ease uncertainties about the banking system in the wake of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank last week, the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history. The president spoke about the actions taken by his administration to give the country confidence that the banking system is safe. “Thanks to the quick action of my administration over the past few days, Americans can have confidence that the banking system is safe," Biden said. "Your deposits will be there when you need them." Biden explained that he instructed his team to protect U.S. workers and small businesses and detailed their actions to protect customers' deposits and not put taxpayer dollars at risk, to hold those responsible accountable, and not to protect investors in the bank. Surveillance video from inside the Capitol shows mostly peaceful chaos.” There have been multiple deaths tied to the attack, and roughly 1,000 arrests have been made in connection with it, while some 500 have pleaded guilty over their roles that day. More than 100 law enforcement officers were injured during the riot. Carlson showed footage of people who entered the Capitol on Jan. 6 roaming the hallways without vandalizing or warring with police officers, including “QAnon Shaman” Jacob Chansley being followed by officers walking behind him and passing a group of several officers without being stopped. March 06, 2023Abortion clinics ban and CPAC recapThe AP reports: Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Friday that he plans to sign a measure that would effectively ban abortion clinics from operating in the state, meaning hospitals will soon be the only places where they can be provided in the state. After passing through the state Senate on Thursday with minor amendments, it returned to the Utah House of Representatives Friday morning, where it was approved and then sent to the governor for final approval. The move comes less than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, returning the power to regulate abortions to states. Cox told reporters that he will sign the legislation, which also clarifies the definition of abortion to address legal liability concerns providers voiced about the way exceptions are worded in state law — a provision that he and Republican lawmakers called a compromise. “One of the concerns with the trigger bill that medical providers had across the state was there was a lack of clarity that would have made it hard for them to perform legal abortions,” Cox said.
