February 17, 2023More train derailments a cause for concern?Another train derailment occurred in Michigan yesterday. There was one rail car carrying hazardous materials, but it was not affected. USA Today reports: Authorities were responding to a freight train derailment Thursday in southeast Michigan, the latest incident as communities in Arizona and Ohio grappled with the fallout from collisions involving hazardous materials. Emergency crews were on the scene in Van Buren Township, where about 30 Norfolk Southern Railway train cars went off the tracks Thursday morning. The derailment prompted temporary road closures which were expected to reopen by the evening, the local public safety department said on Facebook. The township is located about 30 miles west of downtown Detroit. While an investigation into the derailment is ongoing, Van Buren Township Public Safety said there are no reports of injuries and no hazardous materials were aboard the overturned portion of the train. February 16, 2023White House still silent after shooting down unidentified objectsThe White House has been silent about the Chinese spy balloon and 3 other unidentified objects that were shot down over the last week. NBC News reports: There are many theories but precious few answers after the U.S. downed three unidentified airborne objects in as many days over the weekend. Now the White House — under fire for a lack of transparency about the incursions — must contend with frustrated lawmakers and a mystified public amid the Biden administration’s failure to launch a coherent communications strategy about the shootdowns. With fighter jets downing unknown objects over U.S. territory, the White House has revealed little about what precisely is happening and whether the country is under threat. Are the objects harmless weather balloons or spy craft sent by foreign powers bent on doing Americans harm? President Joe Biden hasn’t said. In the absence of hard facts, uninformed speculation is filling the information vacuum, including whether the objects are visiting space aliens. Also, when will the government stop overspending? February 15, 2023Disaster in Ohio and what we know about the recent balloon sightingsMany people have been forced out of their homes, families are losing livestock and family pets, due to the train derailment in Palestine, Ohio that contained toxic chemicals. Fox News reports: A resident of Palestine, Ohio, was forced to move his family out of their home on Monday after suffering from headaches as a foul smell engulfed his community and place of work almost two weeks after a train derailment that leaked toxic chemicals into the air. Many questions remain unanswered after a train consisting of approximately 50 cars, including several carrying highly toxic vinyl chloride, derailed en route to Pennsylvania on the evening of Feb. 3 due to a broken axle. Authorities decided to burn off the toxic gases to avoid an explosion, sending hydrogen chloride and phosgene, a toxic chemical used as a weapon in World War I, into the air. The controlled release of toxic chemicals shrouded the town in thick plumes of black smoke. While evacuated residents were told it was safe to return home shortly after, dead animals and mounting reports of sick residents reporting headaches and other suspicious symptoms have locals fearing the worst isn't over. Business Insider reports: A week after shooting down a suspected Chinese spy balloon that floated over the country, F-22 jets shot down an unidentified object threatening flights over Alaska on Friday. Reports offer conflicting details about the object's capabilities and origin, and US intelligence officials have released limited information about its design or intended purpose. Recently, unidentified anomalous phenomena have been observed not just over the United States, but floating above Canada, Colombia, and Costa Rica. In addition to the first surveillance balloon seen over the country beginning January 31, a second balloon was spotted floating over Latin America on February 4, and two unidentified objects were shot down over Alaska and Canada on Friday and Saturday. February 08, 2023Giving rights back to parents and the SOTU recapIt shouldn’t be controversial to give rights back to parents. ABC has more: The North Carolina State Senate passed Senate Bill 49, known as Parents' Bill of Rights, Tuesday afternoon in a 29-18 vote on party lines. It follows a series of approvals through committees, after first being introduced a week ago. "The government is not a partner in raising our children. Parents have the duty and responsibility to raise their own children according to their own cultural, social and religious beliefs. Opponents to the Parents' Bill of Rights will keep the parents from finding out what the curriculum is, place barriers in the parents' way and complicate policies with shrouds of bureaucratic secrecy. The Parents' Bill of Rights is really about acknowledging parents' vital role in their children's lives," said State Sen. Amy Galey, a Republican who represents Alamance and Randolph counties, who is one of three primary sponsors of the legislation. Senate Bill 49 prohibits instruction on gender identity, sexual activity, or sexuality in kindergarten through fourth grade, though teachers would be able to respond to student-initiated questions. It would also require parents be informed of a change to the name or pronoun for a student in the school records and allow them the right to review course materials and books their children check out of the school library, amongst other measures. February 06, 2023More info on the Chinese spy balloonThe infamous Chinese spy balloon was shot down on Saturday off the coast of South Carolina. China says it was "an accidental incident caused by force majeure." CNBC reports: Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning urged both sides to remain calm after the U.S. said it shot down what it called a Chinese spy balloon. “What I want to emphasize regarding this unexpected accident is that both sides, especially the U.S., should remain calm,” Mao said in Mandarin, according to a CNBC translation. She was speaking at the first of the ministry’s daily press conferences after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken indefinitely postponed his trip to Beijing following news that a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon was flying over the United States.
