Republicans in Congress have been eager to position themselves as the fiscally responsible counterweight to what they consider budget-busting and inflation-increasing overspending from the Biden administration. But just two weeks into their new majority, House Republicans have shown their true colors, and it’s more likely than not that they will make our nation’s fiscal problems even worse. 

The first bill passed by the new majority would repeal $71 billion in new funding for taxpayer services and enforcement by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that Democrats passed last Congress. But an official score from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that this bill would also reduce revenue collections by $186 billion over the next decade because it would undermine the agency’s ability to make wealthy tax cheats pay what they owe. As a result, the first act by the new House majority would increase deficits by roughly $114 billion.

More on the Biden documents. The Hill reports:  

The discovery of classified documents at President Biden’s old office and Delaware home have thrust Attorney General Merrick Garland back into a situation none of his predecessors have encountered. 

Garland has, over the past three months, appointed two special counsels to review the handling of classified documents: One involving the current president, and one involving the former president, both of whom may be on the ballot in 2024. 

Garland appointed a special counsel on Thursday to handle the review of the Biden documents, which were found late last year but only disclosed publicly this week. The Justice Department was quickly alerted, the White House said, and the files were returned to the National Archives.

Another batch of documents has been found at Joe Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. FOX News has more:  

President Biden was dragged on Twitter Thursday for suggesting that a second batch of classified documents discovered in his home were securely locked in his garage alongside his Corvette. 

Biden sparred with Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy over the location of the files. "Classified documents next to your Corvette? What were you thinking?" Doocy asked in a now-viral exchange with the president. 

"I'm going to get the chance to speak on all of this, God willing it'll be soon, but I said earlier this week — and by the way my Corvette is in a locked garage. It's not like it's sitting out in the street," Biden responded. 

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a Special Counsel to investigate the Biden document scandal.

The latest example of inflation is the rising price of eggs. FOX Business reports:  

In November, grocery prices increased 12% compared to a year ago, according to the Consumer Price Index. Egg prices, however, outpaced the overall index and showed the highest annual jump of all food categories, increasing 49.1% compared to a year ago.  

CPI figures for December, which will be announced on Thursday, will offer greater insight into the elevated cost of eggs.  

Still, the average cost for a dozen grade A eggs in November was $3.59, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A year ago, the average cost for the same cartoon was $1.72, labor department data shows.   

The uptick in costs is being blamed on soaring labor, fuel and feed costs combined with reoccurring outbreaks of bird flu that have disrupted production.

Vince discusses Joe Biden reportedly holding onto classified documents from when he was Vice President. ABC News reports:  

The new chair of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday notified the White House that his panel is investigating President Joe Biden's handling of classified records from Biden's time as vice president -- some of which were found in November at an office Biden had used in Washington, D.C. 

In a letter to White House counsel Stuart Delery, obtained by ABC News, Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky asked the White House to provide all documents that were retrieved from Biden's personal office. 

The Oversight Committee is also seeking a list of those who had access to Biden's office; all documents related to the handling of classified documents, including by Biden's lawyers, and the status of their security clearance; and all documents between the White House, the Department of Justice and the National Archives and Record Administration (NARA), Comer wrote.

While Vice President, Joe Biden took classified documents. CNBC reports:  

Attorney General Merrick Garland has assigned the U.S. attorney in Chicago to review documents marked classified that were found at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, two sources with knowledge of the inquiry told CBS News. The roughly 10 documents are from President Biden's vice-presidential office at the center, the sources said. CBS News has learned the FBI is also involved in the U.S. attorney's inquiry. 

The material was identified by personal attorneys for Mr. Biden on Nov. 2, just before the midterm elections, Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president confirmed. The documents were discovered when Mr. Biden's personal attorneys "were packing files housed in a locked closet to prepare to vacate office space at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C.," Sauber said in a statement to CBS News. The documents were contained in a folder that was in a box with other unclassified papers, the sources said. The sources revealed neither what the documents contain nor their level of classification. A source familiar with the matter told CBS News the documents did not contain nuclear secrets.

After 15 rounds of voting for Speaker of the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy has been appointed. CNBC has more:  

Newly elected U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took the gavel of the chamber after a bruising weeklong battle within his own party, promising to carry out a conservative, America-first agenda, tackling the immigration crisis at the Mexican border, cutting back funding at the IRS and fixing “woke indoctrination in our schools.” 

After 14 failed votes since Tuesday, the California Republican was able to overcome opposition after making extraordinary concessions to a small bloc of far-right holdouts who refused to support his speaker bid. 

McCarthy laid out an ambitious plan in addressing the 118th congressional session early Saturday morning, saying he wants to “be the check and provide some balance” to President Joe Biden’s policies. He said the first legislation he plans to tackle will repeal funding for more than 87,000 new IRS agents. He highlighted immigration reform as a top priority, saying the Republican-controlled House will hold some of its first hearings of the year at the Southern border. 

“No more ignoring this crisis of safety and sovereignty,” he said. “We must secure our border.”

With no Speaker of the House having been appointed yet, we continue to wait for a resolution. Fox News reports:  

House Freedom Caucus (HFC) member Troy Nehls claims House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is aware that he will need the caucus's support to get future bills passed. 

"Kevin is aware that any legislation he would like to pass out of this House will require support and endorsement from the Freedom Caucus," Nehls said on the House floor. "This is where I believe we can hold the speaker accountable." 

Nehls made the statement Thursday during another session of unsuccessful votes to determine a Speaker of the House. 

"Kevin McCarthy understands, he understands he must protect that speaker’s gavel and abide the will of the American people," Nehls said. "The decisions we make in the 118th Congress are critical to the future of our country. The decisions we make, the legislation we pass as a Republican majority must have the support of the American people."
