Hour 1:  A Chinese balloon over the US,  why did it take so long to find out. The military is weighing options and they are afraid if it is shot down it will endanger civilians. The Chinese claim that it is a weather balloon. Callers weigh in on what is the balloon is and how it could be used. The Parents’ Bill of Rights has new life after NC Republicans approved the bill. The Charlotte Observer has more: 

Senate Republicans advanced the controversial Parents’ Bill of Rights Wednesday after lengthy and heated opposition from some legislators, parents and students who say the law would be harmful to LGBTQ students and a burden on school districts and educators. Senate Bill 49 is similar to a House bill from the 2021-22 legislative session that received widespread criticism for potentially scaring LGBTQ students from discussing their gender or sexual identities. It would have banned certain curriculum for grades K-3. This year’s version of the bill extends to the fourth grade. Lawmakers debated the bill’s merits in a Senate Education Committee meeting Wednesday before voting to move it forward in the legislative process. Democratic legislators resisted the bill, citing potential harm to marginalized students and arguing the bill would add stress to an understaffed school system. A report released Wednesday by the state Department of Public Instruction shows educator vacancies have risen in North Carolina’s public schools by more than 50%.

CNBC reports: 

FBI agents on Wednesday are searching the Rehoboth, Delaware, beach home of President Joe Biden as part of an investigation into the previous discovery of classified documents at other locations connected to the president, his personal lawyer said. 

The planned, consensual visit is the first publicly known time that the FBI conducted a search of the Rehoboth residence. Agents did not obtain a warrant for the search. 

The Department of Justice is investigating the discovery of classified documents at a private office in a Washington, D.C., think tank that Biden had used while a private citizen, and at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware. 

Biden’s personal lawyer, Bob Bauer, previously has said that the president’s lawyers searched the Rehoboth home and the Wilmington residence on Jan. 11. 

Classified records were found in Wilmington by those attorneys, but not in Rehoboth, according to Bauer. 

The FBI searched the think tank office in mid-November after Biden’s personal lawyers first found classified records there on Nov. 2. The FBI searched Biden’s Wilmington home on Jan. 20. 

Bauer, in a statement Wednesday, said, “Today, with the President’s full support and cooperation, the DOJ is conducting a planned search of his home in Rehoboth, Delaware.”

The Biden administration plans to end the public health emergency in May. The Hill has more: 

The Biden administration on Monday announced that the COVID-19 public health emergency, which has been in place since January 2020, is set to end on May 11. 

“The COVID-19 national emergency and public health emergency (PHE) were declared by the Trump Administration in 2020.  They are currently set to expire on March 1 and April 11, respectively.  At present, the Administration’s plan is to extend the emergency declarations to May 11, and then end both emergencies on that date,” the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) said in a statement. 

Since it was first declared on Jan. 31, 2020, by former Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar, the national PHE has been renewed 12 times under two different administrations. The most recent renewal was declared on Jan. 11.

The deadly beating of Tyre Nichols is just the latest tragedy to spark protests around the country. AP news reports:  

The Memphis police chief disbanded the city’s so-called Scorpion unit on Saturday, citing a “cloud of dishonor” from newly released video that showed some of its officers beating Tyre Nichols to death after stopping the Black motorist. 

Police Director Cerelyn “CJ” Davis acted a day after the harrowing video emerged, saying she listened to Nichols’ relatives, community leaders and uninvolved officers in making the decision. Her announcement came as the nation and the city struggled to come to grips with the violence of the officers, who are also Black. The video renewed doubts about why fatal encounters with law enforcement keep happening despite repeated calls for change. 

Protestors marching through downtown Memphis cheered when they heard the unit had been dissolved. One protestor said over a bullhorn that “the unit that killed Tyre has been permanently disbanded.”

Even with Donald Trump leading in early polling, will it be Ron DeSantis who becomes the GOP nominee in 2024? Bloomberg has more:  

Tana Goertz, who was one of Trump’s Iowa organizers in 2016, so far isn’t returning for 2024, but said she is still behind him.  

Talk show host Steve Deace, who is closely plugged-in with Christian conservatives in Iowa, said Trump alienated some in the party over his support for lockdowns early in the Covid-19 pandemic and other health care freedom issues. 

The Florida governor has subtly drawn contrasts with Trump on those topics, noting that he re-opened Florida schools and businesses far earlier than most states and calling the early pandemic lockdown a mistake. 

“DeSantis,” Deace said, “is basically a progeny of Trump — but a lot more likeable and a lot more electable.”

The AP reports:  

Germany and the United States announced Wednesday that they will send advanced battle tanks to Ukraine, offering what one expert called an “armored punching force” to help Kyiv break combat stalemates as the Russian invasion enters its 12th month. 

The announcement marked the first stage of a coordinated effort by the West to provide dozens of the heavy weapons, which Ukrainian military commanders said would enable counter-offensives, reduce casualties and help restore dwindling ammunition supplies. 

American President Joe Biden said the U.S. will send 31 M1 Abrams tanks, reversing months of persistent arguments by Washington that they were too difficult for Ukrainian troops to operate and maintain. 

The U.S. decision followed Germany’s agreement to send 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from its own stocks. Germany had refused to send the Leopards unless the U.S. put its Abrams on the table, not wanting to incur Russia’s wrath without the U.S. making a similar commitment.

More classified documents were found... at the Indiana home of former VP Mike Pence. CNBC has more: 

 Lawyers for former Vice President Mike Pence said a “small number” of classified documents were found at his home in Carmel, Indiana, last week. 

Pence’s lawyers notified the National Archives and Records Administration of the discovery on Wednesday, according to a letter obtained by CNBC. 

The classified documents were discovered on Jan. 16 after Pence had outside counsel with experience handling classified documents search his own home and records “out of an abundance of caution,” following the news that classified documents were found at President Joe Biden’s home and office, an attorney for Pence told the Archives. The discovery, which was reported earlier by CNN, came after Pence said on several occasions he did not have any classified documents. 

Also, Kevin McCarthy blocks Swalwell and Schiff from joining the House Intelligence Committee. The Hill reports:  

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday formally rejected two Democrats — Reps. Adam Schiff (Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (Calif.) — from serving on the House Intelligence Committee, escalating the two-year tit-for-tat battle between the parties over who is qualified for certain positions on Capitol Hill.  

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) had written to McCarthy on Saturday asking that both Schiff and Swalwell be seated on the Intel panel, where membership assignments come solely at the discretion of the Speaker.

What does reaching the debt ceiling mean for social security? CNBC reports:  

Now that the U.S. has hit the debt ceiling, lawmakers need to revisit the federal budget and find ways to make cuts, Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat representing West Virginia, said in interviews this weekend. 

But that should not include cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits, he said. 

“I’ve got 60% of my population that that’s all they have is Medicare and Social Security,” Manchin told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. 

“You think I’m going to go down that path and put them in jeopardy? No,” he said. 

In a separate interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Manchin called for a key change to help shore up Social Security’s ailing funds — raising the cap on payroll taxes that are used to fund the program. 

“The easiest and quickest thing that we can do is raise the cap,” he said, while also curbing “wasteful spending.”

More classified documents have been discovered at President Biden’s Delaware home. NBC reports:  

Six additional items, including documents with classified markings, were found in President Joe Biden's Delaware home after Justice Department officials searched the residence Friday, the president's personal attorney said Saturday. 

The search was prompted by the White House, not the Justice Department, according to a White House official and a source familiar with the matter. 

The documents at the Wilmington, Delaware, home appear to be related to his time as vice president as well as to his tenure in the U.S. Senate and were found after Biden's counsel offered full access to the premises as the department investigates his possession of classified material, Bob Bauer, Biden's personal attorney, said in a statement. 

“DOJ took possession of materials it deemed within the scope of its inquiry, including six items consisting of documents with classification markings and surrounding materials, some of which were from the President’s service in the Senate and some of which were from his tenure as Vice President," Bauer said.
