David wanted to build a house for God, but God didn’t ask him to. Often we are tempted to do things for God other than what he has asked. But what God is more important to God than all of our gifts and offerings is obedience. The best gift we can give God is to follow his lead.

Crowns Down: Nothing Challenges My Humility More than My Success.

David is arguably one of the best examples among the kings of humility. At the same time, being king he often becomes emboldened or enticed by his victories and power and falls into the trap of pride. Throughout his reign we see pride is regularly his undoing, and humility is typically the source of his greatest strength and the main reason for his intimacy with God.

Where Were You?

We all deal with disappointment in life.  Many times, in that disappointment, we wonder where God is and why He didn’t prevent negative situations from happening.  It causes us to question whether God is who says He is or if He will do what He promises He will do.  As we look through the story of Lazarus, we discover that even when we don’t see it or feel it, God is working and moving in our lives.  God is who says He is and His promises can be trusted.

One of the hardest things about being a Christian is the role of humility in our lives. On one hand we are called to trust God, on the other hand we are told not to boast, or rejoice in the downfall of our enemies. So how do we like Christ, put our trust in God, being confident in him, without letting it go to our head.

Reflections: The Ability to Overcome

I am a huge proponent of Dallas Willard’s statement that our gospel is NOT the gospel of sin management. The power of the gospel is to forgive sin, not to manage my sin or nor am I called to manage anyone else either. Yet for some this has become a cop-out, to a license to cheap grace that Willard nor the Bible ever intended. In this chapter Paul points to the power of the spirit in overcoming our sin in our pursuit of living authentically for Christ.

Reflections: Generous Like Jesus

Many believe that the church is after their wallets and see lessons on tithing as opportunistic and self-serving. Yet most pastors hate to talk about giving for that reason. Still giving is an integral part of Christian living. In this text we look at the generosity of Christ as the model for Christian generosity, not as a requirement of law but as an overflow of who we desire to be like.
