  • Vinton County on the Air Podcast – Eps. 4

In Episode 4 of Vinton County on the Air, we talk activities and programs at the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library,  the Vinton County High School Alumni Association’s activities, and we have a conversation with the Vinton County Viking’s Head Football Coach Justy Burleson.

The Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library always has lots of activities going on, and the remainder of October is no exception. Assistant Director Diana Johnston talks with Bruce about the library’s activities throughout the remainder of October. Diana also describes two services that the library offers to patrons which make it easy to read magazines on your own electronic reading devices, and to borrow books, audio books, music and even some movies from the library even if you can’t make it into the library.

Randy Yates of the Vinton County High School Alumni Association describes in detail the recent history of the Vinton County Alumni Celebrations, and the activities that will occur at the up-coming Fifth Annual Celebration on Saturday, October 19, 2013. Randy also brings us up to date on two additional projects which the Association is taking on – those being the purchase and implementation of an electronic marquee at the Vinton County High School, and the establishment of Vinton County High School Hall of Fame.

Carl Knox’s conversation with Viking’s Head Football Coach Justy Burleson covers the Vikes recent victory over the Alexander Spartans and what the Vikings expect to encounter as they take on the Meigs Marauders tonight, October 11, as they travel down to the Marauder’s new facility. Carl and Justy also have an interesting conversation about Burleson’s thoughts on the formative years of for an athlete – and those thoughts may not be exactly as you might expect!

All this, along with the Vinton County on the Air Calendar of Events, on Episode 4 of Vinton County on the air!

Remember, if you want your community event or activity to be included, please send the information regarding the event to [email protected], or leave a voice mail message at 740-569-3254.

Our second full segment features Vinton County Marketing Director Sam Davidson as he discusses some up-coming Vinton County Chamber of Commerce events, including the Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet taking place on Tuesday, October 8th, the Chamber’s Reverse Raffle on Thursday, November 7th, and this year’s Christmas in Downtown taking place on Saturday, December 7th. Although this is Sam’s first time on the program, we plan to bring him back several times in the future to discuss items of interest to all of Vinton County.

Next, we feature an interview with Paul McManis, who is the publisher of “The Commoner Journal,” an on-line news blog about Vinton County. While we do discuss Paul’s journey with The Commoner Journal, we primarily focus on a journey of another type which Paul recently took as he set-out on a 30 mile prayer-walk to honor and lift-up the memory of fallen firefighter Ryan Seitz, and to highlight the dedication of all first responders. Paul also unveils details of another prayer-walk that he is planning in the near future.

And the episode concludes as Carl Knox talks to the Vinton County Viking’s Cross-County Coach Josh Kirkpatrick about the cross-county program, the team this year, and a few other of Coach K’s activities in the community.

  • Vinton County on the Air Podcast – Eps. 2

Welcome to Vinton County on the Air!

In this, our second episode, we feature four segments about the people and activities in Vinton County.

The first full segment contains an interview with Vinton County Auditor Cindy Owings Waugh in which she discusses a project currently underway to digitize the Vinton County Tax Plat Maps to make them more accessible to the public. Presently, any interested person must visit the Vinton County Courthouse to view the maps, and they are difficult, at best, to alter in the event of a property transfer or a parcel split. Cindy tells us about the steps that are being taken to change this and better the situation.

Our second segment contains our Vinton County Calendar of Events in detail for the period September 27, 2013 to Friday, October 4, 2013, and we highlight some of the more notable upcoming events in the week to follow as well. (You can send information about your community events to [email protected]).

Next we feature an interview with Stacey Tolley – one of the volunteers who are organizing two events for October 6th through which funds will be raised to help establish a scholarship fund in memory of the vibrant Vinton County High School Senior Kendall Sweany who was tragically lost in a car accident in August, 2013.

And in our last segment of the program, Carl Knox conducts an interesting interview with Vinton County Viking Golf Coach Terry Hale about this year’s recently completed high school golf season.

We hope you enjoy the second episode of Vinton County on the Air!
