  • S3 EP 7 | Kayvo Kforce - "African Hip Hop Needs To Reclaim Its Glory"

Kayvo Kforce is a respected name and figure in Kenya and Africa's Hip Hop music scene. He is a prolific artist and has dropped many notable mixtapes, albums and EPs, with his latest (2022) being 'Fathela' and 'Namba Nane Drill'. He will soon drop a new album in honour of his rebrand - influenced by growth, a crave for change and the state of African hip hop in the continent.

In this interview, he explains why the rebrand and change of style is vital. Kayvo Kforce was born in Kenya's Kibera area. He came out into the industry around the same time with Octopizzo, another respected global hip hop head from the same hood. Kayvo gained recognition in the music industry while still a member and founder of the Kibera hip hop group Kforce.

He has worked with many renowned artists and producers locally and internationally. He is a pioneer in the neo-Kenyan Hiphop culture. One of his songs "Songa Pole Pole" is about taking time and moving at your own pace. This seems to be his next era.

  • S3: EP 6 | Shrap King 'Boutross' - An Outsider In The Game

Kenyan rapper Boutross is an outsider in many ways. However, he was always in the game. As a young boy he battled older boys in the hood - eventually taking the crown and prizes as the king kid of freestyles and public speaking. The hitmaker's rise to fame had to do with carving his own path and genre in the game.

He explains why together with his crew (ADH Family) he created SHRAP (Rap, Trap and Popular music delivered in Sheng') - their own music genre that opened a world of no gatekeeping, and a movement without limits. This is perhaps the reason why he is very passionate in mentoring younger artists, especially those considered to be outsiders. ADH Family is now a label working to raise and build other acts.

Boutross's discography includes: '6ixviewsii8k' (2020), 'Kabla Mtindo' (2022) and 'Mawingu' (2022). In this interview, Boutross reveals that the song that changed his life was accidentally made. With the remix of his biggest hit "Angela" in place and a new album on the way, Boutross is looking at new horizons as he enters a new territory within the global music realm.

  • S3: EP4 | Leomile - The One Who Brings Restoration

Leomile is a soulful singer-songwriter and composer who fuses traditional African folk music with neo-soul, jazz and alternative/electronic sounds. In Lesotho, the name Leomile is given to rainmakers and it means “One who brings restoration”. She knows, now more than ever, that her role is to use music to embody her calling while passing messages and stories from her ancestors. Her rich musical tapestry in Sesotho and English, constantly addresses issues of identity, love and womanhood while uplifting culture and folk tales.

Her debut album, ‘Pula-Molomo’ was released in 2016. Since then she continues to grace countless festivals and events; leaving behind remarkable reviews and her powerful resounding presence. Her deliberation to unearth vital and often buried aspects of African life and humanity in her everyday work exposes her optimism, honesty and idealism for a better world. • S3: EP3 | Bongeziwe Mabandla - "My Music Is Sad & I Am Cool With That"

I am still in South Africa and today meeting with Afro-Folk soulful singer and performer Bongeziwe Mabandla who is into making experimental music and fusing multiple genres. Bongeziwe's string of success includes four acclaimed albums and groundbreaking live music performances in his country South Africa and on various international stages and festivals.

His early musical influences stem back to his childhood in the rural town of Tsolo in the Eastern Cape where he grew up singing in church, at school and at home. He moved to Johannesburg to study drama at AFDA but later found himself in music instead of film. In 2022 however Bongeziwe joined the set of a film being shot in Kinshasa by musician and filmmaker BALOJI.

In this interview, Bongeziwe is looking back at his early influences, key collaborations and moments that influenced his growth and identity. We are also discussing the shift and consistency between his albums: Umlilo (2012), Mangaliso (2017), iimini (2020) & amaXesha (2023). With a steadily growing fanbase across the world and a spirit that represents African soul, Bongeziwe continues to build a steady career while releasing relatable raw music that tells "life stories" even if it's about sadness. He says, "I think people are afraid of those kind of emotions."

  • S3: EP 2 | Muneyi - "Stories Are Like Human Beings. They Have Identity"

I meet Muneyi - a multifaceted artist, songwriter, composer and guitarist in South Africa in the comfort of my friend Jess White's house. It's a perfect spot to hear Muneyi's poetic words and comforting tales about his Makhulu (grandmother). His 2021 debut album 'Makhuku' is about lessons in love, loss and healing inspired by the life and perspective of his grandmother.

He asserts that language preservation is an important part of his work and artistry. This, and the fact that he wanted to write songs for his grandmother who only spoke Venda, led him to fully delve into fusing modern sounds and Tshivenda folktales in his writing and storytelling through song. Venda is a Bantu language spoken by Venda people from the northern part of South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Muneyi's music has been described as a healing experience as he connects listeners to his own narrative while giving them a chance to find their own meaning and interpretation in his music that has also been described as a gift from the gods.

We are breaking down the album 'Makhulu' - an ode to his grandmother which ended up resonating with a broad audience, and surpassing language barrier. Before we wrap up, Muneyi is sharing his wish on how South Africa music industry can improve and tips to incorporating traditional languages in commercial songs.

The opener of season 3 of VIP ACCESS podcast is live from South Africa and I am interviewing BONJ - a genre defying South African artist who was born in Soweto and for the stage. Her debut music project 'A Journal' dropped in 2021, soon after breaking off from soulful electro-pop band TheCITY - a band that she founded and also served as a lead vocalist and writer. She terms this project as a sonic journal that introduced her to the world as a solo artist.

In this interview she explains how various sounds, genres and musical influences form part of her identity, and how this influenced her to path to art and training in Classical Music. She however ended up moving effortlessly between Pop, Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Soul, House & Kwaito.

BONJ is now signed to Tresor's Jacquel Entertainment Group and very keen on cross-pollinating with various artists and bands. She says, "It's opportunity to grow and learn," adding, "Exposure and travel feeds art and artists." Her music has also been featured on major films like 'Coming To America II' and 'Happily Ever After' on Netflix.

In the final eps of this season I am taking you to Uganda, and sharing some of my most cherished interviews (recorded between 2016 - 2019). I later caught up with his partner Weasel alongside King Saha - who speak on his passing and how that changed Uganda's entertainment industry. On the other end, I caught up with two of Uganda's best in their genres: The Mith and Bennie Gunter - and they both speak highly about their passion for music and making authentic music that represents Uganda.
