VISION ON SOUND EPISODE 102 - TX SEPTEMBER 18 2022 - VoS GETS A LITTLE BIT PHILOSOPHICAL

Listen Later

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on September 18th 2022

It’s perhaps a bit of a weird one this week, or possibly not, as I invited PAUL CHANDLER, the SHY YETI back to attempt a bit of a chat about the philosophy of television, and to look into why it is that the likes of us latched on to television as a thing we enjoyed at an early age, and turned it into an interest, a fascination, a hobby, or whatever, and certainly made it take up a larger part of our lives than, perhaps, our contemporaries did.

Why, of all things, was it television that excited and stimulated us in such a way as to mean that we’re not sitting here discussing bread-making, or the intricacies of macramé, or fly fishing, or the stripping down the engines of classic motor cars, or the results of this weekend’s footballing games on Sunday evenings at this time?

Well, of course, you could say that all of these things turn up under the broad banner of things seen on television from time to time, but I’m not sure that’s what I was driving at, really, but nevertheless, as is often the case when we start a show with a specific prompt, sometimes the actual conversation goes off in all sorts of other directions, and so I hope you still enjoy this hour which, whilst it might not actually ever get around to answering the question of “Why Television?” does at least allow us to explore the influence that that glowing box of delights has had in shaping PAUL’s creative life through his film-making, script writing, and podcasting.

We do briefly touch upon the impending demise of NEIGHBOURS in the conversation, which was still running at time of recording, but has since sailed off into TV HEAVEN, and I’m sure that another time when we get PAUL back, he’ll have something to say about that, too. If nothing else, dear listener, it shows off how far in advance we record some of these pieces.

PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
