Welcome to the Captain’s Table where we explore the stories that have shaped Star Trek in words.

In this chapter Roz and Michael review the sixth novel in the Titan series, Titan: Synthesis, written by James Swallow.

Described by the author as “a first-contact story with an action twist”, the novel was released in November 2009 and follows the crew of the Titan as they encounter a strange new civilisation, a familiar face from the past and a deadly new enemy.

Our Thoughts: The comic manages to capture the “feel” of the “Search for Spock” really well. The art is very good with some good character likenesses and attention to detail with backgrounds.

Our Thoughts: The story starts slowly but picks up once the crews meet each other although the first meeting is somewhat lacking. A great premise that hopefully offers more as the story develops. Art work is slightly disappointing.

The Final Verdict: Overall, a slow first part of this epic story.

Our Thoughts: The art again is disappointing which in some ways detract from the story but the story itself picks up at a steady pace with the cliff hanger at the end most unexpected.

The Final Verdict: Overall, an improvement from the first part.

Our Thoughts: This issue has a dreadful cliff hanger, one that doesn’t surprise anyone. A few continuity errors within the story itself while the overall arc continues at a good pace. Some improvements in the art .

The Final Verdict: Overall, the story builds up to its dramatic climax.

Issue 1: DC Comics 50 TNG:The Worst of Both Worlds

Our Thoughts: The story comes to a dramatic ending but somehow manages to leave us with more questions than answers. The solution seems somewhat forced upon us but wraps everything up in a neat & tidy bow.

The Final Verdict: Overall, a great premise for a story we were all wondering about. The story itself moves at a great pace but the art sometimes lets the story down and a few plot errors slightly detract from a good story. Some missed opportunities for sure.

Our Thoughts: A great first issue. While the story is a re-imagining it still manages to surprise with some nice differences. The art is very strong and captures the feel of the 2009 film.

The Final Verdict: Overall, a good story with some great art.

Our Thoughts: The second issues continues at a great pace continuing the story of Gary Mitchell with some subtle differences that makes this story very refreshing. The art is very strong and tells the story in a strong way.

Our Thoughts: While it would have been nice to see an original story after the previous issues this re-imaging tale is very enjoyable. Again we see some subtle differences in the JJ verse that enhance the story. The art is still strong but there are some colouring & detail issues.

The Final Verdict: Overall, a good story & some good art.

Our Thoughts: The second part of this reimaging moves away from the original with some major differences that make perfect sense in the new JJ verse. The art again is quite strong apart from the many faces of Ferris. The art also manages to tell the story without the need for words.

The Final Verdict: Overall, much better than part one with the art taking centre stage.
