Welcome to Issue 13 of the Holodeck. This week Michael continues his series of interviews with those within the comic industry who have made an impact upon Star Trek in comics.

This week Michael interviews artist Gordon Purcell. Gordon has been drawing comics for over 15 years and apart from Enterprise has drawn all the incarnations of Star Trek. Gordon gives us an insight into his work, how he is able to draw such amazing actor likenesses, talks about his set visits to the TNG set and much more.

This week Sina, Michael and Dave continue the IDW ongoing Star Trek comic review by looking at “The Red Shirt Tale” and “Keenser’s Story”.

“The Red Shirt Tale” offers a new look on the role of security aboard a Starship while focusing on “Cupcake” from the 2009 film and a retelling of “The Apple” from the original series. In “Keenser’s Story” we find out how Scotty’s friend joined Starfleet and how the two became friends and learn that size does matter!

Our Thoughts: We all enjoyed this story of Hendorff. This story brought back the credibility of the “Red Shirts” in the Star Trek universe. The story is well written and using “The Apple” as the background of the story was genius and the subtle differences between the two universes was interesting to see. While we disagreed about some aspects of the art we all agreed that it was well drawn with some great backgrounds.

The Final Verdict: A great story that we recommend that you all pick this up and give it a read.

Our Thoughts: This was a very good story We found out so much more about Keenser than we ever did in the 2009 film. Some great flashbacks to Kirk’s Father as well as seeing the Kelvin before the events of the film. Again the art split the camp over likenesses but we all agreed that backgrounds & details were very good.

The Final Verdict: A great origin story.

Welcome to Issue 15 of the Holodeck. This week Dave takes the lead on the show while Sina is away on detached duty in the Delta Quadrant.

We are sorry for any sounds issues in this week’s show. Hopefully they won’t detract from a good show.

This week Michael and Dave look at the first Star Trek The Next Generation / Deep Space Nine crossover comic from 1994/95.

The crew of the Enterprise gets acquainted with DS9 after ferrying several Starfleet officers to the station. When the officers disappear after entering the wormhole, Picard is placed in charge of the investigation. On Bajor, religious fundamentalists consider the wormhole’s apparent instability as a sign from the Prophets.

Our Thoughts: This was a great concept with the two crews coming together. we felt that the story overall was good but tried to do too much by having too many sub plots, characters in the story. Also we felt the “Othersiders” were not convincing enough for the “big bad”. What we did feel that the art was amazing, some great likenesses of the main crews, great fighting scenes with Odo looking great in his many shape shifting poses. Good backgrounds which were very strong. Some great covers too.

The Final Verdict: Great art but story needed less character crossovers and more of an in depth look at the villains.

Welcome to Issue 16 of the Holodeck where we find everything is slightly different & Sina is now Empress of the Terran Empire….

Sina, Michael and special guest Wayne continue the IDW ongoing Star Trek comic review by looking at “Mirrored” Parts 1 & 2 but before that we have a discussion on the first issue of the Countdown to Darkness movie prequel comic to Star Trek into Darkness film. We try to avoid any spoilers and read some listener feedback on the comic.

Over a couple of drinks, Scotty tries to explain the concept of jumping between alternate timelines to a stubborn McCoy. Even more bothersome is the thought of an infinite number of McCoys. While the good doctor contemplates the horror of an infinite number of Montgomery Scotts who are poets instead of engineers, a victory is celebrated in another timeline. After defeating the Klingons for the Terran Empire, Captain Spock executes Chancellor Gorkon and waits for word from Commander Kirk on the Praxis Front. However, Kirk is on a mission of revenge to Rura Penthe, where his father’s killer is still held, along with the secrets of his ship.

Our Thoughts: This story was great fun! Although we were not too keen on the “bookends” set in the JJ verse we did like this look of the “Mirror” JJ verse. Kirk’s character was a great villain and had no redeeming features. The art was consistent but some of the likenesses were “off” but the backgrounds were great, the look of the JJ verse was dark with some nice touches such as the battle Armour. Shame about the Enterprise…

The Final Verdict: We would recommend this story, it’s a good read with some interesting character development. .

Welcome to Issue 18 of the Holodeck where we venture into Time & Space with the Doctor & the crew of the Enterprise D.

This week Dave & Michael review the last four issues of the epic Star Trek / Doctor Who crossover series from IDW comics. We also look at new releases.

Picard is adamant, refusing to open negotiations with the Borg. He’d like to see the Borg and the Cybermen destroy each other. Neither Guinan nor the Doctor can persuade him otherwise. Counselor Troi suggests to Amy that the Captain needs to hear from someone other than the Doctor. Amy invites Picard on a tour of the TARDIS and the future of the Federation, if the Cybermen aren’t stopped. When he returns, Picard is finally ready to speak with the Borg.

We discuss the epic crossover, what our thoughts were now that the series has ended and discuss our hopes for the planned sequel.

Our Thoughts: The epic crossover between the crew of the Enterprise and The Doctor comes to a dramatic climax. This story moves at warp speed and it’s a winner! We loved the way the story ends, the character moments between the Doctor & the crew of the D are well written. The Tipton’s have managed to blend the two universes well together and the art remains strong throughout with some great covers.

The Final Verdict: This a must read for all Star Trek / Doctor Who fans. This story deserves a golden ten!

Welcome to Issue 19 of the Holodeck where we begin our look at Star Trek The Animated Series and the wonder of the Bridge Defense system.

Our decision to look at TAS came about due to forum posting:

We look at the history of The Animated Series, how most of the actors from the original series were brought back, the quality of the show. We also discuss how we all started watching TAS.

Then we review the first episode “Beyond the Farthest Star” where in this episode, the Enterprise crew must contend with a malevolent non-corporeal alien entity that has taken control of the ship and tries to force them to help it escape the massive gravity well of a dead star.

No feedback this week but we do discuss an email from Darren Pickles who wants us to discuss Enterprise in comics and how like other franchises like Buffy could there be a season 5 Enterprise comic?

We also have some whacky bloopers this week….

Our Thoughts: This was a great story. Although we were concerned with the amount of characters within the story it does move at a great pace and takes us on a fun ride. The use of Flint, Savage and Q were great ideas and comes across well. The art was very consistent with some amazing details, character likenesses and very strong covers. This is a very strong crossover story and blends in the two universes perfectly.

The Final Verdict: We recommend that if you have not read this story then find a copy now. You won’t be disappointed!
