 We have only 2 weeks left in the Fall semester as students are preparing for finals, end-of the semester performances, and final class projects. This is an excellent time for students to meet with their teachers to be sure they are clear on what they need to do to be successful in every class.

We continue to have some challenges with student tardiness and absences. Please remember that school starts promptly at 8:30 am and students are expected to begin their class and seated when the late bell rings at 8:30 am. This may be the latest starting time I have seen in every LAUSD high school so I would expect every student to be on time. Some high schools start before 7:30 am. This is a schedule we can look at for next year if it would encourage students to get to school on time. Realize that Homeroom is a graded class.

As we get closer to the Winter Break, we have seen an increase in some students making poor choices in terms of their behavior in class. My expectation is every student will do their best to follow the directions of their teachers and that all teachers and students will display mutual respect for one another through the end of the Fall semester in two weeks and in the new calendar year.

Congratulations to all students who performed in the Winter Fest-Music show last Friday. Special thanks to directors Karla Kim and Andrew Yamaguchi and to technical director Miguel Delgado and his crew and videographer Nick Adolfo and his crew. Both Mr. Adolfo’s and Mr. Delgado’s programs are funded in part from federal Perkins and CTE funds. I hope you will join us for Winter Fest this week on December 8 when we feature our students in the Dance Program, at 6:30 pm.

We are now officially in the Winter Sports season which includes boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, and girls water polo. Please come out and support our teams for our home and/or away games.

This is a reminder that the Zone of Choice school selection process is underway. We have already started planning recruitment events at our feeder middle schools. Our enrollment is still under capacity. If we can enroll a few more students, we will qualify for additional teachers. Please spread the word to friends and family who may be looking for a school placement. I would love to share our amazing school with more students. We are planning to open a magnet center in Fall, 20198, with recruitment beginning Fall, 2018, which will boost enrollment.

A reminder to students to be aware of new clubs, auditions, and other opportunities by listening to morning announcements, fliers on our bulletin boards, and checking our website and social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook which are linked on the website at www.vapalegacy.com

This Monday, we will have a School Site Council and Local School Leadership Council meeting on at 4 pm I Rm. D100. Please join us.

I hope everyone had a restful break this last week with family and friends. We have only 3 weeks left in the Fall semester as students are preparing for finals, end-of the semester performances, and final class projects. This is an excellent time for students to meet with their teachers to be sure they are clear on what they need to do to be successful in every class.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Elf, the Musical which closed last week end. Special thanks to director, Stacie Craig, Musical Director, Karla Cho, and Technical Director, Miguel Delgado. I hope you will join us for Winter Fest this week and next week, Music on December 1 and Dance On December 8, both at 6:30 pm.

We are now officially in the Winter Sports season which includes boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, and girls water polo. Congratulations to all of our Fall teams including our Legacy Cross-Country team which competed in the CIF City Finals last Saturday. Please come out and support our teams including Girls Soccer at home this Monday at 2:30 and 4 pm.

We wish coach Holland and our Challenge LA team the best of luck in their competition this Saturday. We are the only school in Local District East who are participating in the program this year.

Hello VAPA Community! This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements! Tuesday is a shortened day. ¡Hola Comunidad de VAPA! Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios! El martes es un día acortado.

The 15-week Progress Reports will be sent home this week. This is an excellent time for all students to check with their teachers about missing assignments and work they could do to bring up their grades. This is also a good time for parents to schedule teacher conferences if there are any questions about what is expected of students and the support and encouragement that may be needed from home.

We are proud of all of our student athletes and their teams as they finish out their seasons and we get ready for Winter sports. We wish our Cross Country team good luck in the CIF City Finals this Saturday at Pierce College.

Please join us for Elf the Musical, our Fall play, this weekend on Friday and Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm and our Winter Fest shows at 7 pm on December 1 (music) and December 8 (dance).

Special Announcement

Since the birth of our Nation, American patriots have stepped forward to serve our country and defend our way of life. With honor and distinction, generations of servicemen and women have taken up arms to win our independence, preserve our Union, and secure our freedom. From the Minutemen to our Post-9/11 Generation, these heroes have put their lives on the line so that we might live in a world that is safer, freer, and more just, and we owe them a profound debt of gratitude. On Veterans Day, we salute the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who have rendered the highest service any American can offer, and we rededicate ourselves to fulfilling our commitment to all those who serve in our name.

This day, and every day, we pay tribute to America's sons and daughters who have answered our country's call. We recognize the sacrifice of those who have been part of the finest fighting force the world has ever known and the loved ones who stand beside them. We will never forget the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice and all those who have not yet returned home. As a grateful Nation, let us show our appreciation by honoring all our veterans.

On a personal note, I am extremely proud of my older son is a Marine Corps veteran and my younger son is an active duty Marine. I am also thankful for our own Legacy VAPA veterans we have on our faculty and staff. We honor them and all veterans and those who are on active duty service today.

Hello VAPA Community! This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements! Tuesday is a shortened day and there is no school on Friday. Hola comunidad VAPA! ¡Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios! El martes es un día acortado y no hay escuela el viernes.

Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School is a student-centered, creative learning community that engages students intellectually and artistically, instilling responsible citizenship and academic rigor for college and career preparedness.

Tis is a reminder to please complete the LAUSD School Experience Survey either online or by completing the paper copy when it arrives at home. We are striving for 100% for the survey which is completed by all students, parents, and staff.

Lastly, the 15-week progress reports will be sent out next week. Please be sure you register for the parent portal/PassPORT program and Schoology to see real-time progress in all student’s classes.

First of all, please note our school vision: Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School is a student-centered, creative learning community that engages students intellectually and artistically, instilling responsible citizenship and academic rigor for college and career preparedness.

It is important to know what our vision is as we continue to add new programs and expand our school so everything is aligned to that vision. I have a meeting with the district tomorrow regarding our application to add a magnet center to Legacy VAPA.

Thank you to all the parents that completed the application for Free and Reduced Lunch. The deadline was extended to tomorrow, October 30. There are still 20 families who have not completed the application, most who are receiving free or reduced lunch. Please complete and submit the online form tonight or tomorrow to continue in the program.

This week the LAUSD School Experience Survey will be available online. You may complete it online or through the hard-copy paper process in a few weeks. We are striving for 100% for the survey which is completed by all students, parents, and staff.

Lastly, with this week being Halloween. Please note the following:

Students may wear costumes to school. The single largest criteria is that costumes may not be demeaning to any person or group based on ethnicity, race, religion, nationality, disability, gender, gender identity (boys as girls and vice versa), or individual (staff or student) at the school. · Costume may not cause a significant or distraction to the school program; i.e., no revealing costumes (low cut, French maids, nightwear, bathing suites, etc.) · No costumes may include props or equipment that is unsafe · No weapons, or even replica weapons, are to be brought to school. · No costumes are allowed that would impair a student’s vision or movement (ability to climb stairs) · Masks may not be worn during a parade or other specific activity, as determined by the administrator. · All provisions regarding obscene materials or prohibited substance remain in effect. ·

Last week an important letter and survey went out top many of our students regarding a special program and opportunity from Sprint. It is critical that all of the paperwork is signed and returned ASAP.

The deadline to complete the federal meal applications is this week. At last count, there are still 98 families who have not completed the application. Funding for field trips, classroom materials, and staff are severely impacted by applications submitted and approved. Fee waivers for SAT, ACT, AP Tests, and some college applications are tied to the federal meal program applications. If you have not completed your applications, please do so today and call the school for assistance, if needed. 

Congratulations to everyone involved in our Homecoming Week activities last week, our winning football team and Spirit Team, and all of our students and staff who put together a wonderful Homecoming Dance last night. This was a great week to be a Tiger.

Last week an important letter and survey went out top many of our students regarding a special program and opportunity from Sprint. It is critical that all of the paperwork is signed and returned ASAP before the time runs out.

This is a busy week. We have a School Site Council meeting Monday at 3:30 pm, Coffee with the Principal Thursday qt 9 am, Parent Conference Night and some meetings Thursday at 5:30 pm, the Homecoming Game Friday at 7 pm, and the Homecoming Dance Saturday at 6 pm. Teachers also have a professional development workshop on Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm.

This is Spirit Week at Legacy VAPA. Monday is College Day, Tuesday is Twins Day, Wednesday is Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Thursday is Throwback Thursday, and Friday is Tiger Pride Day.

Congratulations to our students who presented a workshop with Ms. Craig at the California Educational Theatre Association annual conference at the Arts Institutes of California yesterday. Their session shared the success of our 3-year Writing for Musical Theatre career path and how theatre teachers may start a similar program at their schools. Congratulations also to our three students who participated in the Chicano Leadership institute this weekend.

Lastly, any students who are auditioning for the Music Center Spotlight Awards program need to see me on Monday for assistance completing their application and uploading their audition video. The deadline in Monday.

Lastly, any students who are auditioning for the Music Center Spotlight Awards program need to confirm their participation with me on Monday. Our Spotlight Showcase is Friday, October 13 and our Spotlight Recording Sessions will be the same day after school. Videos are due on Monday, October 16.

Looking forward, Our Parent Conference Night is October 19, the Homecoming Game is October 20, and the Homecoming Dance is October 21.

This is Hispanic Heritage Month through October 15th and October Is Bully Prevention, College Awareness, Cultural Diversity, Disability Awareness, Filipino American History, LGBT History, Breast Cancer Awareness, Substance Abuse Prevention, And Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Walk to School Day is October 5.

Congratulations to all performers in our first annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration last Thursday night. Several of our instrumental and vocal groups performed including the debut of the new Dreamers Choir.

Our Senior Night and College Night will be this Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm. Please join us for our next home football game on Friday, October 6 at 7 pm.

Lastly, any students who are auditioning for the Music Center Spotlight Awards program need to confirm their participation with me on Monday. Our Spotlight Showcase is October 6 and our Spotlight Recording Sessions will be the following week with the audition video due at the end of the week.
