We wish our VAPA seniors all the best as they take their Final Exams this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

We will have a virtual Open House tomorrow, Tuesday, May 26, at 5 pm. The Zoom Webinar links is posted on our social media sites and website at www.vapalegacy.com and www.bit.ly/vapaonline.

SENIORS

I encourage our seniors to go to their page on our website https://bit.ly/2020vapa

We are coming down to the end of the year! June 5 is the day for seniors to come to school and return textbooks, library books, pay any outstanding debts, and return technology, uniforms, and equipment. We have also set aside this day for students to pick-up caps and gowns and awards after turning in their clearance sheet.

We will have a virtual Senior Awards and Recital presented via YouTube Premier on June 10 at 2 pm. The deadline to submit recital videos is Thursday, June 4. Our Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation will be Saturday, June 13, at 2 pm, presented via YouTube Premier. We encourage you to watch with your families. After the graduation event, diplomas will be mailed to students. Links for both events will be posted on our social media sites and website.

We will also have a virtual Sports Orientation Day on Wednesday, June 17, at 5 pm. Coaches will be available to answer questions about their teams at the event. Login links for the Sports Day webinar will be posted soon.

10th and 11th GRADERS

Please complete the course request form on the Schoology Group for your grade. Classes and master schedule will be finalized soon followed by enrolling students in classes. Please on attending summer school if you are missing any classes and counselors will enroll you.

We will have a virtual Coffee With the Principal on Friday, May 22, at 10 am. Our virtual Open House will be Tuesday, May 26, at 2 pm. Zoom Meet links for both events will be posted on our social media sites and website.

TRANSFERS

The district Open Enrollment and the Zone of Choice One-Time Transfer Window has opened and closes May 29. Please tell a friend or refer a family with an 8th grade student. Our goal is to maintain or grow our enrollment by the Fall so we can keep all of our programs and wonderful educators at VAPA! Also, any student who would like to transfer to VAPA as One-time Transfer, need to start the process at their current school. Welcome, Legacy VAPA Class of 2024

Dear Students and Parents or Guardians,

It is with great excitement I welcome you to the Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School family! We have been working hard to prepare for a wonderful year for you full of fantastic learning opportunities from the classroom to the stage and beyond! We are excited about the many programs we offer that you will learn about from your Link Crew mentors to the 3-day ACE program for all Freshmen, to the Leader in Me program.

I hope to see you at Fall events, our Freshman Orientation event, our opening football game, Back-to-School Night, shows, concerts, recitals, and more! Please be aware that given the current health crisis we are all facing, we are not sure at this point what any of these will look like, but we are hopeful we will get back to more of a normal situation soon.

LAUSD will run a virtual Summer School Program running from June 24 to July 28. Please go to https://btb.lausd.net/summerprograms more info. Traditionally, our sports teams would be holding try-outs and practices after a Sports Orientation. We will plan to schedule on online sports orientation on June 15 and we will send out more information about this once it is finalized. Our Summer Orientation for New Freshmen will be on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 from 8 am to 1 pm and the first day of school is Tuesday, August 18, 2020, though both dates are subject to change per direction from the district.

Queridos Estudiantes, Padres y Guardianes,

 Es con gran entusiasmo que les doy la bienvenida a la familia de Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School! Hemos estado trabajando duro para prepararles un año maravilloso lleno de oportunidades fantásticas de aprendizaje desde el salón al escenario y más allá. Tenemos muchos programas nuevos que estamos implementando este año de los cual usted aprenderá de los mentores de Link Crew al programa de 3 días de ACE para todos los estudiantes del grado 9, hasta el programa Leader in Me.

This is Foster Care Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. 15-Week Progress Reports are out this week and there are 5 weeks of school left until summer. The last day of instruction is June 12, Summer School is Online and June 24-July 28, and the first day of instruction in the Fall is August 18.  

We wish our VAPA students all the best as they start taking Advanced Placement Exams this week.

GRADE-SPECIFIC ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SENIORS

We will be making some deliveries to seniors this week on Tuesday including refunds and other paperwork. Any senior who thinks we may have an incorrect address on file should e-mail me at [email protected] with your correct address. We will have a pick-up day at school for any deliveries we are not able to make. Stay-tuned for updates about graduation. We will host a virtual Senior Awards and Recital Event and more information will go out this week on this. Caps and Gowns will arrive soon. There will be a date at the start of June for seniors to return textbooks, equipment, uniforms, and instruments, and pick-up Caps and Gowns. There will be another pick-up process for diplomas and awards.

Hello VAPA Community! This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements! ¡Hola Comunidad de VAPA! Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios!  

We are continuing teaching and learning online this week as I hope to continue to answer questions and provide more support for our students as well as the teachers who teach them. This week we celebrate National Teachers Week with National Teachers Day being Tuesday. Please give a shout-out or a thank you to your teachers this week! One of my early mentors in education, in the classroom and as a school leader, was Jon Liechty, the first principal I worked with as a full-time teacher at Berendo Middle School  in the 80’s. Mr. Liechty always said, whenever he got the chance, that the classroom teacher is the most important person that works for the school district because their reach is far and the impact they make on kids’ lives on a daily basis is more than anyone else in our educational system. And I agree and this has guided my work as a school leader. Teachers matter and we should thank them for their service whenever we can and support them in any way we can. So, to the VAPA teachers, and teachers, everywhere, we salute you!

 In addition to honoring our teachers this week, this is a busy and fun week for us at Legacy VAPA with some special highlights. Monday is PJ Day, Tuesday is Stuffed Animal day, Wednesday is Self-Care Day, Thursday is Netflix and Quarantine Day, and Friday is Tiger Spirit Day.

On Tuesday we will host a special Cinco de Mayo celebration on Zoom which will be linked on our website and social media platforms late Tuesday afternoon. On Friday, our jazz and show choir continues their guest speaker series with a live look inside a recording studio in Seattle, Washington.

Senior Announcements (4/30/20)

April 30, 2020

Dear VAPA Seniors and Parents or Guardians,

We are now in the last month and a half of the school year and I have some updates for you. I’m sure you agree this has been an unprecedented time for all of us and I am sure not the way our seniors wanted to close their last year of high school. We are finding answers to questions as soon as possible and are working on plans to honor our seniors in a few different ways including signs and messages online.

We have been featuring seniors on our social media sites and website. We are asking ALL seniors to send a photo and plans for college or whatever they will be doing after high school. We need these as soon as possible, ideally before Friday, May 1, so they may be featured in the slide show we are sending to LAUSD to be posted on the LAUSD website. Please send photos and information to Ms. Dadrass at [email protected].

We are planning virtual or online events for Cinco de Mayo, Senior Awards and Recital, and the National Honor Society Induction. Please look for updates and information on these and any other activities on our website at www.vapalegacy.com , the online website at www.bit.ly/vapaonline, and our social media sites. For planning purposes, these events will be celebrated on or near the traditional dates.

We are looking at a few options for graduation and are awaiting for district approval to move forward including a virtual or online ceremony and some other innovative ideas. As soon as they are approved, we will survey our seniors and families to decide which way we will go.

Please note the following regarding senior dues and refunds. Grad Nite which was a PTSA-sponsored event, was cancelled by Disneyland and refund checks have been mailed out to seniors. The Prom and Panorama Picture have been cancelled. Refund checks for these activities are being written, based on what students paid, and will be distributed as soon as possible, probably next week. T-Shirts and Sweatshirts have already been distributed and the Yearbook is still being produced, so there will not be refunds for these items. Yearbooks will not be done until the Fall and we will have a distribution and signing day when they are ready.

We are so proud of our seniors and all their accomplishments. We hope you will do all you can to stay physically and emotionally fit over the rest of the year, through the summer, and into next year. As difficult as this is, especially for our seniors, this definitely will be a year to remember.

Hello VAPA Community! This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements! ¡Hola Comunidad de VAPA! Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios!  

At Legacy VAPA, we are continuing to connect with our students and community online. You may hear “virtual learning system” or “virtual academy” and these are all another way of saying “online school”.  We will continue teaching and learning in the environment for the rest of the semester which ends June 12 and in summer school, June 24-July 28. Teachers will be holding regular office hours and teaching online, sometimes through live online sessions with their students and sometimes through e-mail and text communications, depending on the teacher and the class. We hold staff and community meetings on Zoom, one of the video conferencing platforms that many schools use.

Here are a few reminders:

Grab and Go school meals continue to be distributed at South Gate and Southeast High Schools from 7-11 am each weekday.

Seniors are being sent refunds for Grad Nite, which was cancelled by Disneyland, in the mail.

Seniors are being reimbursed for fees paid for Prom and the Senior Picture as soon as the checks are ready and they will be distributed at school.

We are preparing some online events to celebrate college acceptances and graduation.

The 15 week report cards will be out soon. Please support our work at VAPA helping students succeed by ensuring students to their assigned work and attend classes online as scheduled.

We are moving forward with preparation for the next school year including finalizing our budgets, completing the master schedule and assigning teachers and students to classes, and calendaring events, and sending out welcome packets and letters.

Hello VAPA Community! This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements! ¡Hola Comunidad de VAPA! Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios!  

We are continuing teaching and learning online this week as we find more and more tools to help us in this work and provide more support for our students. Today I will proovide new resources and information important for our families.

Last week we held our first virtual Coffee With the Principal. Please look for information for the next Coffee With the Principal meetings online in May and in June. This week the South Gate Community of Schools will hold a Virtual Town Hall meeting on April 23 at 1 pm to provide an update on school services. Meeting information will be posted on our website and social media platforms. Please join us.

We have a new website for our work as an online school, VAPA Online, which can be found at bit.ly/vapaonline the site has new teacher class hours and office hours, video updates, and other information to support families for the next several months.

We also have a new Parent Request/Concern form to get the support you need in English or Spanish. The form is at bit.ly/vaparequestenglish for English and bit.ly/vaparequestspanish for Spanish.  Lastly, feel free to leave a message or text my Google Voice phone number at 323-596-7531. We will answer questions or address concerns as soon as possible.

It is critical that all of our students continue to meet with their teachers in Schoology or Zoom live conferences, stay in contact their teachers through e-mail, and continue to complete assigned school work and assessments.  

Grab N Go Centers at South Gate and Southeast High School continue to provide meals for students from 7am-11am, Monday through Friday.

Free home WiFi options are posted on the ITD HomePage: bit.ly/itdhelp and can be coordinated via Charter Spectrum or Comcast.

Technical Support Most technical support issues can be resolved over the phone via the Crisis Hotline posted on the ITD Homepage. For families: (213) 443-1300 and For employees: (213) 241-2700. Call centers are open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Los Angeles Unified, PBS SoCal | KCET, and KLCS-TV have partnered to provide free supplemental educational resources on live television and online to help your family support learning during the school closures. Grades 9–12 KCET (Channel 28.1) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. KLCS (Channel 58.1) from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This week we at Legacy VAPA, and the rest of LAUSD, will continue teaching and learning remotely in a virtual or online environment. Please note that teachers will be holding regular office hours for students and parents to visit online three times a week and these hours are posted on our website (under “Our School”) and our social media platforms. You may also find the online schedule and many other resources at https://bit.ly/vapaonline During the office hour, you may contact teachers through e-mail, telephone if they have set-up a phone line for that, and some teachers will be holding open video conferences. I will have an office hour for parents and community on Thursdays at 3:30 pm.

Please support our work at VAPA helping students succeed by ensuring students to their assigned work and attend classes online as scheduled and check in to Schoology at lms.lausd.net frequently. We’re all in this together, and, truly, together is the only way we will succeed through the challenges we face by not being at our school site.

Hello VAPA Community! This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements! ¡Hola Comunidad de VAPA! Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios!  

This week we are in our third week of instruction delivered to our students as the Legacy Visual and Performing Arts Virtual Academy! Please note that teachers will be holding regular office hours for students and parents to visit online three times a week and these will be posted on our website and social media platforms. During the office hour, you may contact the teacher through e-mail, telephone if they have set-up a phone line for that, and some teachers will be holding open video conferences. I will have three office hours a week, as well, and though I will try to keep them on the same days and times, they are subject to change depending on my schedule. This week I will have a Student Virtual Breakfast with the Principal on Monday at 10 am, Staff Virtual Afternoon Tea with the Principal on Tuesday at 3:30 pm, and  Parent and Community Virtual Coffee with the Principal on Thursday at 6 pm.  I will post a schedule on our website and social media platforms.

We will have one more distribution of school Chromebooks for students who were not issued one and who do not have access to one. Please note the devices must all be returned when our school sites re-open and paperwork must be completed and signed. Tomorrow, Monday, April 30 devices will be issued out of the VAPA offices, 9th and 10th Grade from 9 until 10:30 am and 11th and 12th Grade from 10:30 am to 12 noon. Please note that we will be adhering to the CDC safety protocols including maintaining social distancing when we are issuing the devices.

Progress Report grades will be submitted this week. It is critical that all of our students check-in with their teachers on a regular basis during the school closure, attend live class sessions if offered, and stay on top of all of their class and homework, especially seniors. The end of the year will be upon us before you know it and we want to be sure we continue to have a high class pass-rate and a high graduation rate.

Our faculty are participating in a series of training this week to support them and bring the best online teaching practices to our school and are scheduling office hours, virtual live class sessions, and assigning and assessing student’s work. Our counselors and support staff are contacting students, developing our master schedule for next year, and running our office functions from off-site. Our administrative team is supporting the work of our staff as we plan contingencies for upcoming scheduled events and plan for next year. We all have a job to do. Please support our work at VAPA be ensuring students to their assigned work and attend classes online as scheduled and check in to Schoology at lms.lausd.net frequently. We’re all in this together, and, truly, together is the only way we will succeed through the challenges we face by not being at our school site.

This Friday is the Cesar Chavez Birthday holiday and next week is Spring Break. Please enjoy the time off with friends and family and if I do not see you in one of the meetings this week, rest, be safe, and I will see you when we return the Week of April 13.
