  • Ep 29 - So You Want To Write Music for Film and TV? with Jim McGrath pt 2

This week on The Vocal Lab, I sit down with Jim Mcrath (pronounced McGraw). a Toronto-based composer best known for his television work, including the hit series: Degrassi: The Next Generation, Killjoys, CBC's Republic of Doyle and Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town. Interestingly, Jim's theme for Degrassi was featured in Drake's video "I'm Upset" which saw over 95 million views.

Jim has also written arrangements for such recording artists as Tom Cochrane (with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra), Ian Thornley and Big Wreck (with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra); the Tower of Power Horns, Manteca, The Northern Pikes, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah Slean, and most recently for Steven Page in concert with the Vancouver Symphony.

We talk about the interesting career path of intentionally going into writing for film and TV, by way of advertising to start. Since Jim has also done a lot of arranging for some major artists, we talk through some of the specifics around that part of the work as well.

This is an excellent interview to listen to for anyone looking at different career paths within the industry!

As usual, you will hear half the interview Monday, and the other half on Thursday!

  • Ep 27 - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Working With A Coach, and More!

On today's episode, you're getting me, and me alone. We're going to journey into all the ins and outs of working with a coach. For our purposes, we're talking about vocal coaching, but honestly, the same principals apply to any other kind of skill coaching - musical instruments, business, personal growth, you name it.

    • Coaches hold up a mirror and help us identify, see, and learn the tools to navigate our roadblocks.
    • You're going to hear me hold some possibly controversial opinions about working with different coaches.
    • We're going to talk about who takes lessons, and why
    • We'll talk about the difference between a teacher and a coach
    • We'll talk about the what you get out of lessons, and the student's part in the process

Buckle up for the first solo episode with me! We'll do more of these over time, talking about all things voice and performance. If you have ideas for things you'd like to hear on the show, follow the link below!

  • Ep 26 - Nice Guys Finish First: with Rock Singer/Drummer Marc LaFrance, pt. 2

On today's show, we welcome drummer, singer, producer, and songwriter, Marc LaFrance. Marc has been a fixture in the Vancouver for over 4 decades. He has been the Drummer/Singer for Bachman & Turner and Randy Bachman since 2009, and is the Drummer/Singer with Cease & Desist. Notably, he has recorded with a vast array of prominent artists including Crowcuss, Chilliwack, Payolas, Loverboy, Trooper, Prism, Shari Ulrich, Bruce Miller, Straight Lines, Glass Tiger, Long John Baldry, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cher, Carly Simon, Blue Murder, The Cult, David Lee Roth, Scorpions, Black Veil Brides, "Michael Bublé's Christmas in New York," and many others.

Marc and I talk about the what-I'd-do-differently and the what-I'd-do-agains, his music education, important career relationships, and creating longevity in the music industry. We talk about the perspective that this is indeed the music 'business', and there are some cross-sectional skills that are important. Marc talks about caring for his voice over the course of his career, and the physical requirements of being a singing drummer. We talk about his drum setup and posture to facilitate singing while playing, and about being at home out front and behind the kit.

Marc talks about the opportunities he had to work with Scholastic, and create music for video games and animation, and we get into the different organizations Marc has served with (on the Board), to lobby for artist rights, and the success of the music industry. Marc does a great job of explaining Neighbouring Rights, which is now administered by ACTRA RACS, and how significantly the concept has affected his career.

Make sure you catch both parts of this interview: episodes 25 (Monday) and 26 (Thursday)!

Be sure to check out Marc's new Eagles Tribute project: Take It To The Limit, the Ultimate Eagles Tribute at the Centennial Theatre, April 2, 2023

About Vocal Lab

From the publisher's feed

This show aims to pull back the curtain on the music industry, and give up-and-coming artists some of the knowledge that veterans wish they'd had when they were just starting out. Our format on The Vocal Lab incorporates some solo episodes where it's just Sara, talking about voice care and singing and performance coaching, the realities of life on the road, and how to prep for the studio - basically answering questions you may or may not even know to ask!We will also have TONS of guest interview episodes, where veterans can draw on their experience to lay out the yellow brick road for the next generation of artists. You'll get to hear their perspective through the lens of "what I know now that I wish I'd known then."
