The 15th of September has been designated by the UN as the International Day of Democracy; and this year’s theme has been set as the ‘role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping good governance.

But how do AI technologies affect democracy? After all, it’s still humans who vote in democratic elections, make political decisions, and rule in the courtrooms. But there are several areas where technology’s impact is already present. For example -automated decision-making where Artificial Intelligence tools help judges with scarce resources to draft court decisions, or assist authorities in developing new policies. AI has a vast potential to transform our societies for the better, but only with the premise that data used to train AI is reliable, objective, and bias-free. Widely used for circulating news and information, AI can sometimes be intentionally used to spread misinformation, undermining and harming democracy. With many such AI applications being owned and designed by private companies, their transparency and accountability are ever more urgent.

In this episode the presenters take a critical look at 'deepfakes' and how this new technology poses a great danger to society. Living in the digital age, the advancement of AI has led to the possibility of spreading misinformation to the point that it alters our very sense of reality. Are there any Islamic values and responses that could help prevent the misuse of this type of technology? How can a belief system, and more importantly, trust in God, help individuals know what to believe and trust.
