Old Age - A long and lonely journey?
The life expectancy in comparison to over 100 years ago has more than doubled. Across the world, people are living longer. In 1900, the average life expectancy of a newborn was 32 years. By 2021 this had more than doubled to 71 years. As people live longer do they also experience a fulfilling social life in old age? According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member.
