  • Pathway to Peace Podcast 03-12-2023 Breaking Chains: Islam's quest to abolish slavery
Synopsis: Whilst the transatlantic slave trade was outlawed in 1807 and slavery is prohibited internationally by Article 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, there are still an estimated 12.3 million people across the world in slavery today, forced to work for little or no pay. 2nd December has been marked by the UN as ‘International Day for the Abolition of Slavery’, as it signifies date of adoption of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others in 1949.
In this episode of Pathway to Peace, the presenters examine the sad reality of Slavery and discuss the impact slavery has on a society from an economic and moral perspective. It also touches upon the history of slavery up to modern times; and finally, the Islamic perspective on how it seeks to abolish slavery in all its forms.
Presenters: Amaar Idris, Raza Qureshi & Imam Adeel Shah
