  • Pathway to Peace Podcast 22 - 10 - 2023 - United Nations: is it fit for purpose?
Title: United Nations: is it fit for purpose?
Synopsis: In this episode of Pathway to Peace, we take a look at the institution of the United Nations, given the marking of United Nations Day on 24th October. United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations, and yet despite its coming into being, we have seen numerous conflicts emerging and things only appear to be getting worse. The Presenters explore the history of the United Nations and how it came into being; as well as trying to understand where its faults lie and why in its current format it is severely struggling to bring about peace between nation states.
