Stephen Schulz, Teaching Professor of Music History & Flute, as well as the Director of the CMU Baroque Ensemble, speaks with JIm Cunningham on the phone from his home in Alameda, California. He fills us in on the status of his Pittsburgh group and the pandemic effects in California.  He’s editing a new cd of Couperin recorded just before the world changed. Stephen runs down the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the west coast music scene and how he’s coping with the extra time at home sharing his thoughts on the music scene around the globe and for his students in Pittsburgh.

Joshua Gindele and John Largess, cellist and violist respectively of the Miro Quartet, chat with WQED-FM’s Jim Cunningham about what it’s like to spend 15 years recording the complete Beethoven string quartets. The full 8-CD boxset, recorded on the Pentatone label, is titled “Beethoven – Complete String Quartets.” A culmination of 15 years of work, the set has been released just in time for Beethoven’s 250th birthday and the 25th anniversary of the Miro Quartet itself. Joshua Gindele has a special relationship to Pittsburgh, having grown up here and played with the Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Pianist Jonathan Biss chats with WQED-FM’s Jim Cunningham about the recent finish of his nine-year, nine-disc long project recording all of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. Jonathan has played with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the past, and he’ll be back playing Mozart with the PSO in May 2021.
