Perfectly Imperfect: Finding Peace with Our Insecurities (Ep 299)
Justin reflects on reaching 299 episodes of Voices for VoicesⓇ and the incredible journey of growing from a local Ohio podcast to reaching listeners worldwide.
• Being present in the moment is something Justin still struggles with despite improvement since his 2017 mental health crisis
• Mental illness can create a disconnect between how we appear to others and how we feel inside
• Justin repeatedly asked family members "how do I look?" during his recovery because he couldn't trust his own perception
• Teenage insecurities about acne have evolved into adult insecurities that still affect Justin today
• Stress eating patterns and poor sleep habits remain ongoing challenges connected to mental health
• After hitting rock bottom, Justin had 22 cavities requiring extensive dental work before eventually getting Invisalign
• The journey from mental health crisis to addressing insecurities has taken nearly eight years
• None of us are perfect, and we shouldn't strive for perfection – doing our best must be enough
• Every day we continue living is a present – the present is a present

The Silent Battle: Robert Enke's Tragic Story | Ep 298
The devastating story of Robert Enke cuts straight to the heart of professional sports' greatest unspoken crisis. At just 32, this elite German goalkeeper with a promising international career ahead of him stepped in front of a train, leaving behind a grieving wife, an adopted daughter, and a shocked football world that never saw it coming.
Behind Enke's composed demeanor on the pitch lurked a years-long battle with depression that began in 2003. Despite his rising profile with Hanover 96 and the German national team, his mental health struggles remained hidden from all but his closest confidants. The cruel irony haunts us still—a man who seemingly had everything—fame, wealth, talent, respect—felt so trapped by his inner demons that he could see no way forward. The pressure of elite sports, where vulnerability equals weakness, created a prison of silence that ultimately proved fatal.
Particularly heartbreaking was the connection between Enke's suicide location and the nearby grave of his two-year-old daughter Lara, who had died three years earlier from heart disease. That profound loss deepened his depression, yet the professional football environment offered nowhere to safely process such pain. His suicide note revealed he feared losing everything—including his career and the chance to adopt another child—if his mental health struggles became public knowledge.
Enke's death sparked a reckoning within football. Germany postponed international matches, 40,000 fans attended his memorial, and the Robert Enke Foundation was established to raise awareness about mental health in sports. Yet progress remains painfully slow—as recently as 2023, only three of eighteen Bundesliga clubs employed full-time sports psychologists. His story serves as both warning and challenge: we must create spaces where vulnerability isn't punished but supported, where seeking help demonstrates strength rather than weakness.
If you're struggling, please remember that talking to someone and seeking help doesn't make you weak—it makes you human. Behind the masks we all wear, everyone battles something. Reach out, connect, and know that your life has immeasurable worth beyond any professional achievement.

California’s Solution to Human Trafficking is Unbelievably Stupid | Ep 297
We explore California's troubling approach to human trafficking laws, focusing on Assembly Bill 379 which would transform the buying and selling of humans from a misdemeanor to a felony but remains unsigned by Governor Newsom despite years of advocacy.
• San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan has fought for 10 years to change California law on human trafficking
• Current California law makes purchasing minors for sexual exploitation only a misdemeanor—"like buying a slice of pizza"
• Assembly Bill 379 would make trafficking a felony and increase resources for victims' mental health and shelter services
• The bill has been sitting on Governor Newsom's desk for years without action
• Call the governor's office at 916-445-2841 to urge passage of Assembly Bill 379
• We extend an open invitation to Governor Newsom to discuss this important legislation on our show

Sex Trafficking at Major Events: Fighting Back with San Diego County DA Summer Stephan | Ep 296
Summer Stephan has devoted her life to protecting the vulnerable. Since age 12, when she saw exploited children in a National Geographic photo, the San Diego County District Attorney has worked tirelessly to remove "that look of hopelessness" from victims' eyes.
At a recent press conference ahead of Comic-Con, Stephan delivered a powerful message to potential traffickers: "You're not welcome here." This stance exemplifies her leadership in the fight against human trafficking, which she calls a national model. Her office has pioneered specialized prosecution teams and trained law enforcement to recognize and respond to trafficking with empathy and expertise.
The San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force operates around the clock, bringing together multiple agencies to recover victims and apprehend offenders. Their success is remarkable—at last year's Comic-Con alone, they arrested 14 traffickers and rescued 10 victims, including a 16-year-old. Stephan emphasizes that trafficking doesn't just happen overseas; it happens in our communities and at our events.
Trafficking survivor David Solomon provides heartbreaking testimony about being trafficked beginning at age 11. He describes the powerful psychological manipulation traffickers employ—what Stephan calls "psychological kidnap"—that keeps victims trapped even without physical restraints. "I still wanted to go back to him," Solomon reveals about his captor, illustrating how effective this grooming can be.
Perhaps most shocking is Stephan's ten-year battle to change California law that currently treats buying children for sex as merely a misdemeanor. "We're basically saying if you can afford it, go ahead...exploit human beings," she notes with frustration. Thankfully, legislation to address this sits on the governor's desk after passing both legislative chambers.
What can communities do? Stephan urges vigilance for subtle signs of trafficking: Is someone speaking for the potential victim? Do they seem disoriented about time or location? There's no stereotype for what traffickers look like—they could be neighbors, authority figures, or wealthy individuals hiding in plain sight.
Join the fight against human trafficking by learning these warning signs and reporting suspicious activity. Together, we can create a society where every human being lives with dignity and safety, free from exploitation.

Looking Back: Why Celebrating Small Wins Matters on Your Journey (Ep 294)
Amidst the constant rush of modern life, how often do we truly stop to acknowledge what we've accomplished? In this reflective episode, Justin shares powerful insights about the importance of pausing to celebrate our victories rather than always chasing the next goal.
Have you ever felt like you're swimming in quicksand – taking two steps forward only to fall three steps back? You're not alone. Justin explores that frustrating feeling of constantly pushing forward without seeming to make progress, and why continuing despite that feeling is actually an achievement worth celebrating. Through personal stories about his travels to Italy during his graduate studies and the "mixtapes" of memories he created afterward, he demonstrates how easily we forget our own remarkable journeys.
The conversation delves into our tendency toward "mind swimming" – that overwhelming sensation of frantically moving from task to project, message to email, without ever feeling caught up. Justin vulnerably shares his own mental health journey, revealing how it took him over 30 years to admit he needed help, and the exhausting but necessary process of sharing his 138 different troubling thoughts with therapists before healing could begin.
Perhaps most striking is Justin's perspective on impact versus metrics. "If you have 1,000 downloads but all those viewers are passively watching, then I'm not doing my job," he reflects, contrasting this with the profound value of deeply reaching even a handful of listeners. This philosophy has guided Voices for VoicesⓇ to nearly 300 episodes, with impact measured not by numbers but by meaningful connections.
Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by life's constant demands or simply need permission to acknowledge how far you've come, this episode offers a refreshing reminder that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply stop, reflect, and honor our journey – with all its highs, lows, and everything in between.

Escaping the Cult: One Survivor's Warning | Ep 291
David Solomon returns to share his harrowing first-hand experience with the Followers of Christ Church in Oregon City, known as "The Baby Killing Cult" for its dangerous faith healing practices and manipulation tactics. He provides crucial insights into cult recruitment strategies, brainwashing techniques, and institutional complicity to help others recognize warning signs and find hope after escaping similar situations.
• Youth recruitment tactics that separate children from parents through fun activities and special attention
• Gradual indoctrination process that creates dependency on the cult while isolating members from family
• Dangerous faith healing doctrine that rejects medical care, resulting in preventable deaths and suffering
• Manipulation of Bible verses to control members through fear and twisted theology
• Institutional connections with police, social services and schools that protect the cult from accountability
• Brainwashing techniques that turn children against parents by claiming parents are "spiritually unwell"
• Warning signs that someone you know might be involved in a destructive cult

The $600,000 Offer: How Bryan Davis's Blackmail Scheme Targeted Voices for Voices | Ep 290
A shocking pattern of bribery, blackmail, and business sabotage has emerged targeting Voices for VoicesⓇ and our network of associates. What began as an attempt to misappropriate intellectual property through financial incentives has escalated into coordinated cyber attacks and explicit six-figure bribery attempts.
We've uncovered compelling evidence that an individual named Bryan Davis has engaged in multiple bribery attempts exceeding $50,000—first targeting Stephen Reimers (the stepfather of our former guest David Solomon) to acquire intellectual property rights that weren't his to claim. When rebuffed, Davis apparently escalated to actively sabotaging Reimers' hyperbaric chamber business, interfering with customer relationships and causing the loss of a $200,000+ transaction that had already been agreed upon.
Most alarming is what happened around the July 4th weekend, when our organization detected an unusual spike in suspicious cyber activity. This digital intrusion appears to have been used to gather information about our associates, as shortly thereafter, an individual connected to our organization received a direct offer of $600,000 from Davis to "not do this"—a brazen attempt to silence potential whistleblowers. When money didn't work, other forms of leverage were allegedly attempted.
This disturbing progression from intellectual property theft to business interference to cyber attacks represents a serious public safety concern. Through documenting these incidents, we hope to alert other organizations and individuals to be vigilant about similar predatory behavior. The tactics used against us could easily be deployed against others who lack the resources or platform to defend themselves.
As we approach our milestone of 300 total episodes by the end of 2025, we remain committed to our mission despite these challenges. If you've experienced similar attempts at bribery, blackmail, or business sabotage, we encourage you to consult legal professionals and appropriate authorities. Your support through likes, shares, and subscriptions helps ensure that voices like ours—and yours—won't be silenced by intimidation tactics, no matter how financially substantial they may be.
