Voices from the Field 24 - Our Highway, Our Tears: Indigenous Women’s and Two Spirit People’s Health and Resource Extraction

In 2021, Canadian Scholars Press published the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health’s university-led textbook entitled Introduction to Determinants of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples’ Health in Canada. Comprising wisdoms from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis leaders, knowledge holders, artists, activists, clinicians, health researchers, students, and youth, this Indigenous-led book offers practical insights and applied knowledge about combating coloniality and transforming healthcare systems in Canada.

The NCCIH's Dr. Julie Sutherland, one of the books editors, is joined by Ryan O’Toole. Ryan co-authored, with Onyx Sloan Morgan and Laura McNabb Coombs, a chapter entitled “Our Highway, Our Tears.” The chapter traces how resource extraction has created unique health disparities among Indigenous women, and Two Spirit people. The authors honour the creativity and strength of Indigenous communities that engage in myriad ways to combat gender-based violence through systemic transformation.

En 2021, la maison d’édition Canadian Scholars Press a publié le manuel préparé par des universitaires pour le CCNSA, intitulé Introduction to Determinants of First Nations Inuit and Metis People’s Health in Canada, soit Introduction aux déterminants de la santé des populations autochtones au Canada. Je suis la Dre Julie Sutherland, et je suis une des éditrices de ce livre. Aujourd’hui, je suis en compagnie de Ryan O’Toole. Ryan est coauteure, avec Onyx Sloan Morgan et Laura McNabb Coombs, d’un chapitre du livre intitulé Our Highway, Our Tears – notre route et nos larmes.

Ce chapitre explique comment l’extraction des ressources a contribué à créer des disparités particulières en matière de santé des femmes autochtones et des personnes bispirituelles. Les auteurs rendent hommage à la créativité et à la force des communautés autochtones qui contribuent de multiples façons à la lutte contre la violence fondée sur le genre grâce à la transformation systémique. NCCIH Webinar - Past, Present, and Future: The Story of a Northern Ontario First Nations Health Data Partnership

In 2016, several First Nations health service organizations in northern Ontario came together to address a shared challenge: a lack of high-quality, community-specific health data that they needed to make evidence-informed decisions. This led to the formation of Mamow Ahyamowen (Everyone’s Voices), an epidemiology partnership of 11 First Nations organizations collectively serving 78 communities across the region. Building on the foundational work of the Chiefs of Ontario and ICES, Mamow Ahyamowen used health administrative data to better understand the mortality experiences of its communities in 2019. Since then, the Partnership has prioritized meaningful knowledge translation and capacity-strengthening activities to share findings in ways that support Partners and communities.

This webinar will tell the story of Mamow Ahyamowen through lenses of self-determination and Indigenous Data Sovereignty. Participants will hear from presenters who hold various roles in the Partnership, including Loretta Loon (Steering Committee Member for the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority), Dr. Jennifer Walker (Epidemiologist, Health Services Researcher & Advisor), and Maureen Gustafson (Knowledge Translation Specialist). Together they will provide an overview of the Partnership’s history, work to date, and path forward.

Voices from the Field 23 - A discussion of Visioning the Future: First Nation, Inuit, and Métis Population and Public Health

The COVID-19 global pandemic has underscored and exacerbated inequities in public health, drawing attention to the crucial need to articulate a public health vision for Indigenous Peoples that conceives of a healthier, more equitable future. In this episode, Dr. Evan Adams and Dr. Margo Greenwood discuss the creation and contents of a collaborative report by the NCCIH offering a vision for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples’ public health. The commissioned report not only complements the Chief Public Health Officer’s 2021 public health vision report, but also privileges Indigenous knowledges. The "Visioning the Future" report represents a multifaceted vision as articulated by Indigenous Peoples from coast to coast to coast.

La pandémie mondiale de COVID-19 a fait ressortir et aggravé les iniquités en santé publique et a, du même coup, attiré l’attention sur la nécessité absolue de définir pour les Autochtones une vision d’avenir en santé publique placée sous le signe de l’équité et du mieux-être. Dans cet épisode, le Dr Evan Adams et madame Margo Greenwood parlent de l’élaboration et du contenu d’un rapport collaboratif et présentent ainsi un idéal pour la santé publique des Premières Nations, des Inuits et des Métis. Le rapport commandé ne fait pas que compléter le rapport de l’administratrice en chef de la santé publique de 2021, qui définit un idéal pour la santé publique; il accorde aussi une place centrale aux savoirs autochtones. Le document intitulé Vers un avenir meilleur cristallise un idéal multidimensionnel formulé par les peuples autochtones d’un bout à l’autre du pays.

Vers un avenir meilleur regroupe une série de webinaires portant sur une vision de la santé publique adaptée aux besoins des Premières Nations, des Inuits et des Métis. Ces webinaires font suite à une publication du Centre de collaboration nationale de la santé autochtone parue en 2021 sous le titre Vers un avenir meilleur : Santé publique et populationnelle chez les Premières Nations, les Inuits et les Métis. Produit de manière collaborative, ce rapport présente une vision d’avenir pour la santé autochtone qui donne une large part aux savoirs traditionnels. Il sert de complément au rapport de 2021 de la directrice de la santé publique du Canada intitulé Une vision pour transformer le système de santé publique du Canada.

Le troisième webinaire de cette série présente les visions de la santé publique formulées par trois organisations autochtones nationales : l’Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, le Ralliement national des Métis et l’Assemblée des Premières Nations. Des représentants de chaque organisation présenteront un survol des réalités actuelles de la population que chacun d’entre eux représente, avant de définir les changements à apporter et formuler des recommandations sur les moyens de les réaliser.

She will examine how disaggregated data that is self-created and self-governed can inform actions that will achieve health equity. Dr. McDonald will highlight how external control of First Nations by central governments has contributed to a system of health services that is inappropriate, inadequate, and full of systemic biases. She will highlight the cruciality of First Nations health sovereignty to this population’s health and well-being.

In this webinar, Dr. Shannon Waters will examine the impact of the disrupted relationship between Indigenous Peoples and place (land, water, animals, plants) on the health of the land and all living beings. She will consider best practices for re-establishing Indigenous Peoples’ connection to and ownership/co-governance of the natural environment. Dr. Chris Mushquash will present ways in which historical and ongoing processes of colonization have disrupted Indigenous Peoples’ health and mental wellness. Ce webinaire présente une approche holistique de l’environnement en tant que déterminant de la santé autochtone. Cette approche examine les facteurs de l’environnement physique qui influent sur la santé, mais va plus loin en considérant les dimensions émotionnelle, spirituelle et intellectuelle essentielles au bien-être général. Dans ce webinaire, la Dre Shannon Waters déplore la rupture du lien qui unissait les peuples autochtones au lieu (la terre, l’eau, les animaux, les plantes) ainsi que les effets de cette rupture sur la santé de l’écosystème et de tous les êtres vivants. Visioning the Future is a series of webinars offering a vision for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples’ public health. These webinars are a development of the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health’s 2021 publication, Visioning the Future: First Nations, Inuit, & Métis Population and Public Health, a collaborative report offering a vision for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples’ public health. Privileging Indigenous knowledges, the commissioned report complements the Chief Public Health Officer’s 2021 public health vision report, A Vision to Transform Canada's Public Health System.

A determinants of health approach offers a comprehensive framework for considering the health inequities Indigenous Peoples experience. In this session, Dr. Marcia Anderson will reflect on Indigenous Peoples’ inherent right to self-determination as a critical component of achieving health equity. She will raise important questions to help stakeholders engage in decision making and program development that is culturally relevant and culturally safe. Ms. Theresa Koonoo will present on the importance of preserving traditional health knowledge and Inuit Qaujimajatuqanigit (IQ) to health care practice and better health outcomes for Nunavummiut. Dr. Greenwood will examine how racism is a historical and current driver of inequities and is especially evident in the healthcare system. She will consider how respecting each other’s diverse ways of knowing is fundamental to creating a health care system characterized by equity.

L’approche par les déterminants de la santé fournit un cadre complet qui permet de mieux cerner les iniquités en santé auxquelles se heurtent les peuples autochtones. Au cours de cet épisode, la Dre Marcia Anderson souligne le droit inhérent de ces peuples à l’autodétermination, qui constitue une étape fondamentale vers l’équité en matière de santé. Elle soulève d’importantes questions pour aider les intervenants à prendre des décisions et à concevoir des programmes appropriés et respectueux de la culture. NCCIH Webinar - First Nations’ Leadership on Climate Change – National and regional strategies of the Assembly of First Nations

This webinar brings together presentations by five representatives of national and regional offices of the AFN who hold portfolios related to the environment, including Jewel Davies and Shauna Yeomans-Lindstrom (Yukon Climate Action Fellowship - AFN Yukon), Mitch Downton (Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs Secretariat), Graeme Reed (AFN National Office) and Patricia Rojas (BC Regional Office). Collectively they provide an overview of the work underway by the AFN at the national and regional levels in order to understand how First Nations leaders and communities are uniquely experiencing climate change and the strategies being employed to address the climate crisis.

Voices from the Field 21 - Ajarat Adegun and Shirley Thompson

In this episode, we hear from co-authors Ajarat Adegun and Shirley Thompson, both with the University of Manitoba. They provide an overview of their article titled, Higher COVID-19 rates in Manitoba’s First Nations compared to non-First Nations linked to limited infrastructure on reserves.

As part of this podcast, they discuss a mapping exercise they undertook to find out the infrastructural inequalities experienced by First Nations versus non-First Nations communities in the province, particularly in the northern regions. What they found was that there are specific socio-economic factors that continue to place First Nations people on reserve at greater risk of developing and transmitting infectious diseases like COVID-19, including the built environment (e.g. housing, roads, and access to hospitals).

Dans cet épisode, nous allons écouter les coauteures Ajarat Adegun et Shirley Thompson, qui travaillent toutes deux à l’Université du Manitoba. Elles donnent un aperçu de leur article intitulé Higher COVID-19 rates in Manitoba’s First Nations compared to non-First Nations linked to limited infrastructure on reserves(des taux plus élevés de COVID-19 chez les Premières Nations du Manitoba que chez les non-Autochtones en raison des infrastructures limitées dans les réserves).

Dans ce balado, elles traitent d’un exercice de cartographie qu’elles ont entrepris en vue de déterminer les inégalités auxquelles font face les communautés des Premières Nations par rapport aux communautés non autochtones dans la province, surtout dans les régions du nord. Elles ont constaté que certains facteurs socioéconomiques particuliers continuent d’exposer les peuples des Premières Nations à un plus grand risque de contracter et de transmettre des maladies infectieuses comme la COVID-19, notamment l’environnement bâti (p. ex. les logements, les routes et l’accès à des hôpitaux).
